IGN is going up for auction, according to a Wall Street Journal report. After a year of fruitless talks with potential bidders, parent company News Corp. is working with investment bank Allen & Co. to auction off the group of entertainment and video game websites.

I never liked IGN or their reviews.  I hate to see people get laid off though.  Is the site still remaining, just needing a new owner?  Wow it was bought for $650 million and now being auctioned for $100.  Talk a bout a loss if it doesn't go up from that.

That was 2005 - 3 years before the bust and this was old media investing in new media. Silly print folk not getting the interwebs ;)

Look at the numbers in the Myspace deal if you want to talk about loss.  Yikes.

Something to keep in mind is that IGN owns 1up.com as well.

Do they really?  Man, I never knew that.  So does that mean they'll be gone as well?  Didn't 1up already get bought to keep it afloat?  Along with the EGM mag.

1up did get bought...and then sold to IGN. They currently work in the IGN offices.

EGM was bought separately by the original publisher, Steve Harris.

EGM was shit too.  But 1up was actually quite good, from what little I read.

I liked IGN back in the days of the original Playstation.

1up has gotten really good since Jeremy Parish took over. Lots of good features, many of them retro-focused.

That poor site has been barely hanging on by a thread for years now.

EGM was always my favorite magazine growing up.  Gamepro, Nintendo Power, meh...

EGM, seemed to have the most coverage from Japan back then. Sure it was guys taking pics of Famitsu magazines and then trying to translate them but no one else was doing that back then. That I recall.

I remember the big SNES blowout they had. My teen eyes bled with all them pics. Tiny as they were.

I eventually switched to Gamefan though.
