Title: Another PCE Rarity: The HuVideo Sampler SCD
Post by: bt on October 28, 2012, 02:42:17 PM
This is a Sample SCD made by Nimai Malle (or at least he made parts of it). It has about a dozen (or so) HuVideo clips, and a Dr Mario Clone (Malle-O). At least one of the clips (STADIUM) ended up as the opening to John Madden Football ....yup, that was HuVideo too.
Here is a youtube video I made of it. You can even see my reflection in some of the shots because I'm too lazy/tired to re-shoot it and upload it. Besides, it is close to Halloween.

Nice, definitely a cool tech demo. I also like the chicks apparently in the bathtub at the start.
This was being done as a Super CD?

The ladies in the opening are in a hot tub, and yes it's a Super CD (SCD). In the menu you can see where it says "2Mbit System."

Wow thanks for sharing this! There's some cool stuff for sure on that disk. The Dr Mario game is pretty hilarious too. Was that a playable game or just a demo video?

Playable game. You can see that I suck at it.

Very cool tech demo -- Nimai Malle was obviously talented, but stuck working by himself, maybe?
The idol in the video was the then-popular Rieko Miura: (http://www.chrismcovell.com/secret/jp_mags/famitsu_92/FMG11.jpg)

I'd love to play some Dr Mario on my PCE even if it's called Mr Malle-o

Very nice! Thanks for sharing! Really shows what a difference HuVideo could have made for Sherlock Holmes...

At one point I emailed Nimai Malle about this SCD, and he was surprised that it had made it "out of Hudson." I forget exactly what it was that I was asking him about, or what his reply was (pre-dates my gmail account), may have to search through older email archives).

I found the old emails ... I was asking him about "Compressed Sprite Format," -- I think this is mentioned somewhere in the Hu7 manuals, so I wanted to see if he had any info, he did not, and he also consulted one of the guys from the Bomberman 93 dev team, who also denied such a thing.

Very cool! Looks quite impressive! I wonder how much (if at all) this differs from later huvideo like Gulliver Boy. Thank you for sharing! :)

Man, that 4th video of flying around in first person actually looked really good. They should have made a game like that.

I would love to be able to play Dr. Mario on my Duo.
I have never seen, nor heard any mention of any other copies of this floating around. Not saying they don't exist, but as for sources, I can offer no help there, sorry.

Thanks for going back and scouring those ancient email files (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
I have a question for you: the sprite compression you were inquiring about... does that have anything to do with the compression technique that NEC referred to as "NID" during trade shows? I remember reading about NID (http://archives.tg-16.com/turbo_play_0005.htm#t08), but I always assumed that it was never implemented in PCE hardware (perhaps PC-FX...), and was a lossy .jpg-esque sort of thing.
Thanks in advance (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

The emails were from 8 years ago, and although I do not have a copy of what I wrote, I am pretty sure that the sprite compression stuff is mentioned in the Hu7 docs (may need to grab those and re-check), or possible the published notes from the Hudson Developer's Conference (1990 time range).
