Title: What do you think of flash cards?
Post by: bartre on November 04, 2012, 01:35:27 PM
I recently moved across town, and hauling all of my individual games with me proved to be a bit of a hassle.
additionally, i'm going to be moving again in about 6 months, and I do not want to have to haul all of this crap again.
so the idea crossed my mind to ditch large portions of my collection in favor of flash carts.
I've done a spot of research, and from what I see, most of them aren't 100% compatible, at least the ones i'd be interested in.
what are your thoughts?

I have flash carts for my Genesis, SNES, TG16/PCE, and Atari 2600.  I still keep a fairly large library of quality titles, though.  To me, the flash carts are for convenience, for checking out potential purchases, or for playing games that I have no interest in owning.  I enjoy having my game library, and wouldn't really consider dumping it and just using the flash carts.  I don't have a moral problem with those who do; I just enjoy owning copies of games that I like.

don't worry, If I decide to dump some sections, i'll let you know :P

that said, the big question for me is about SNES flash carts, has anyone here tried the SD2NES?
I've seen footage of it running mega man x2 and x3, which by themselves are almost worth the price of the cart.

For me a flashcard would be mostly used to play "hacked" roms, or translations.  And likely some testing too.
I dont have any flash card yet. I have more "real" games than i actually have time to play so im not in a hurry.

Have a everdrive for my genesis not to mention a snes one as well.I haven't had a chance to use the snes one yet since i need the console still. As for the genesis one it's great it let's me play any game i want.Plus,it can double as a converter for playing any mega-cd games.Recently krikzz has announce he's making a nes/famicom everdrive next and i can't wait for that.

In general i think flash cartridges are great and being very convenient to have. Not to mention it helps if you just want a small collection.

pack up all the cases/manuals etc for the hueys, and just keep them in baseball card books or just stack the HuCards.

The Turbo is the easiest system out there to carry around carts wherever you go.

I agree with Ark, I'd want the flash cart for playing Insanity XXj2 and Marbled my Madness, but that's about it.  :)

Personally I just can't get into the flash cards. Don't get me wrong, I think they're great, but better used for playing homebrew/patched/translated games etc.

Something about having a single card with an entire library of roms on it makes me less likely to play the games. Sounds crazy I know but I find when I'm presented with so many different games I either can't pick one to play or only play through a game superficially in order to hurry up and load the next one.

I'd rather play via emulation for the sake of portability or testing a game out, when it comes to a serious gaming session nothing beats having a real copy of the game.

Without getting into the moral implications, a flash card (like others have said) is nice to play super r@res like Magical Chase and the occasional homebrew. I would never trade my Turbo out for one. I own an older Tototek 32M one that I picked up on a lot buy.

I have been meaning to get the 2600 flash cart (Harmony) for when I run game rooms for the logistical aspect. Hauling 100 carts gets old plus saves ware and tear on the cartridge slot. I hae no passion for VCS, so I have no reservations on a flash cart for it.

I'm pretty much in this same boat. I have a fairly large collection of titles across all the systems I collect for, but picked up the flash carts later on (SNES, GBA, DS, and eventually PCE and NES) so I can play some of the titles on real hardware that I have little desire to own, as well as the ones I sort of CAN'T own as originals, such as hacks and fan-translated RPGs.

No experience with it but I want to chime in here. I'll admit I've used similar logic as you to justify flash cart purchases, but you've got to be careful with it. With X2/X3 you're not paying more because they are better actual games, you're paying more because the physical carts are rare. The JP versions of both carts can be found for under $20, as well as MM7. Of course they can all be played on a US SNES with a minor modification.

(BTW this is also coming from someone who's probably spent more than he should have on flash carts over the years. :D)

I had about 60 SNES titles when I picked up my Powerpak last month, and had planned on selling one of my pricier carts (Earthbound) to justify/offset the cost. After playing with the PP for a few weeks, I remembered why I collected titles in the first place, and decided not to sell a thing. I've also continued to pick up more titles since then, even though I could've just downloaded the roms and loaded them onto the PP.

I like mine for convenience (especially for playing PCE roms on the Turbob) and for playing pricey/translated/homebrew titles, but I'd never get rid of my legit games.  They're my preciousssssssss!

that's kinda my big issue too, I used to have a MUCH bigger collection, actually.
but as I'm downsizing, I'm finding myself actually playing the games a lot more.
hmm, I may be ditching some of my stuff anyway, just to have some space, y'know?

I'm pretty sure that's how a lot of us feel.
and besides, it's not like the flash cart can play Ys I&II, right?

bartre: I have a lot of extra room in my garage. You will send all of your items to me for safe storage (I will put them in plastic bins before and after playing them). You are quite welcome. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

It hasn't stop me from buying games even though i have two flash cartridges.Still it's great if there is game i want to play but it's to expensive to buy period.Speaking of price it's been going up like crazy for the snes.I all most didn't want to get the console again because of that.Still when i seen there are 3 different flash cards for it,i thought why not and i bought a super everdrive. When ever i get a turbo everdrive i know i won't sell my collection i just want to play titles with the fan translation.

Same here.  I got a Turbo Everdrive recently, but I still buy turbobs.

I've got flash carts for my 2600 (Harmony), NES (PowerPak), SNES (Super Everdrive), Genesis/MD (Everdrive MD), SMS (Master Everdrive), and PCE (Turbo Everdrive). For a few cases I have my flash carts acting as the entire library since I usually need money and space for other things. But in most cases they supplement my collection as opposed to replacing whole libraries.

I think flash carts are great on a "try before you buy" basis and help give me a much better idea of how a game plays than trying it out in emulation. And in that way they've helped me be smarter about what games I pick up, so that way I don't buy a game, wind up not liking it, and then flip it around shortly after. I also find that flash carts are fantastic for parties and meetups since I don't have to drag a whole bunch of carts along if I'm getting a console set up.

Agreed on both counts try before you buy and saving money.I know i don't care for having a big collection for each console i own.I like the fact, that flash cartridge can save me some space.
