Title: Help me catch up on 3D action games.
Post by: SamIAm on November 28, 2012, 11:31:46 PM
I was going to post in that "Why I'm a retro gamer" thread that I basically never cared for 3D action games. Whether in terms of the visual aesthetics of the games in motion or just the controls in general, I've always been drawn toward old 2D stuff, and I've stuck to it almost exclusively. Truth be told, I can count the number of fully 3D action games I've put proper effort into playing on one hand.

As I get older, though, I really don't want to succumb to being another one of history's countless "kids these days don't know shit, everything was better back in the day" people. I'm 28, and I can already feel it happening. Thus, in an effort to not be left in the dust, I'm trying to enjoy games (and other things) which are a little outside of my old-school comfort zone.

Someone gave me Mario 64 (and an N64), and that seems like a good launchpad for playing more 3D stuff. I've tried it before, but only long enough to get a first impression about it. Now, I've resolved to beat it and form a more complete judgment. It's going well so far. After I finish that game, I'd like to keep going, but I'm not sure what to play next. I'd like an action game that's not an FPS but still has a relatively modern approach to gameplay design. I've got a fully backwards-compatible PS3 (yes, practically unused), a Dreamcast, a Saturn, and this N64. I live in Japan, though, so availability is a bit of a factor.

Any suggestions for someone in my particular situation?

Batman Arkham Asylum / City - both awesome games.
Bayonetta - Best action game in years.

How are those in terms of accessibility to someone who's avoided 3D like the plague?

You're going to hate Batman unless you've played a lot of stuff like it. You'll be lost and constantly facing walls.

I haven't avoided EVERYTHING 3D, but I hate almost all of it. I would say Mario 64 was pretty good since it was the first 3D platformer that was actually fun and playable, but it's also really f*cking old now and nothing 3D ages like 2D. Mario Galaxy 1 might be a better choice.

I recommend anything in the Dynasty Warriors series. There are a million of them. The goal is usually just to kill everyone or protect someone so it's easy to not get disorientated. If you don't like samurai get one of the Gundam or Hokutonoken ones.

Get a Wii, and get Lost in Shadow.

Or, explore the Playstation 1 and 2 library of Spyro style games.

Do you want just platformers?

Jumping Flash 2 is another one you need to play on PS1.

For some more modern crap, there's Panzer Dragoon Orta for Xbox!

It's hard to say, not having avoided 3D myself. You may feel moments of panic while first playing Bayonetta, but that's just how Bayonetta is and you get used to it. The Batman games are less action oriented than Bayonetta - more like arcade adventures with combat. Neither is that hard to complete.

It doesn't have to be just platformers or hack 'n slash. One of the few 3D games I've played a lot was Panzer Dragoon Zwei on the Saturn.

Interesting suggestions so far. Keep them coming. :)

You should also just play most of the Dreamcast library, as it is full of great games like Jet Grind Radio, Blue Stinger, Slave Zero, Illbleed, Outtrigger, Phantasy Star Online, and Resident Evil Code Veronica.

You also can't go wrong with Sonic Adventure, Fur Fighters, Ecco, Power Stone, or well, most of the DC library

Get Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver!

and MDK2 was cool also.

Tomb Raider on DC was nice too.

DREAMCAST YEAHAAAAAAA

Sonic Generations is really good. It mixes 2D with 3D gameplay so that's a nice way to ease yourself in.

You also can't go wrong with Sonic Adventure,

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding where this guy is coming from, Sonic Adventure (and ESPECIALLY Sonic Adventure 2) is the exact opposite of what he needs. Those games drove me temporarily insane with rage and frustration. The second one is far worse, but the first one is pretty awful too when it comes to disorienting 2D-minded people. After that first level with the killer whale its all way WAY downhill.

Power Stone

Oh yeah, Power Stone for sure.

Also on DC, Rez, Shenmue 1 and 2, Sakura Wars 3. The DC was the first 3D system with 3D graphics that were actually decent, IMHO.

The one genre of gaming that 3D unquestionably benefited with almost none of the insufferable learning curve associated with the 3DO to N64 era is sports including driving. Games like Motor Toon Grand Prix 2, Touge Max G, and even stuff like FIFA on 3DO are actually still pretty fun even today. Stuff like Syphon Filter and Tenchu 1 however...best left in the past.

I didn't think Sonic was disorienting, lol.

All of the wacked out stuff is automated for you.   When you're going all warp speed through shit, it kinda moves the screen and keeps you going along without having to worry.

Since you are going for "action" and only played a few... you might as well go for some PS1/Saturn/N64 games to start with. Then work your way up to Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox and especially the PS2 (seriously, it has soooo many good games due to its preferred game developer use and long life).

I would start with some earlier games like Starfox 64, Pilotwings 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time (if you don't mind longer adventure gameplay), Sin and Punishment, Megaman Legends (also on N64 as Megaman 64), Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu 1 and 2, Dino Crisis 2, Resident Evil 2, Tomb Raider 2, Ace Combat 2 and 3, Twisted Metal series, Syphon Filter series, Einhander, Ghost in The Shell, Dynamite Deka, Burning Rangers, Nights, Virtual-On, and Thunder Force 5. Wow, it is hard to think of 3D titles for the Saturn compared to so many good 2D titles it has.

Fur Fighters!  Loved that game, though, I never did beat the final boss, I gotta go back & see if I still have my old save file somewhere.  I also have the PS2 version, but, for some reason, I kinda prefer the DC version.  I think it's the voice acting.  I prefered the non-sensical voices from the DC version over the proper acting in the PS2 version.

I saw the first 3 Crach Bandicoots are where it's at.  They are basically 2D games in 3D.  They're more straightforward(though there are hidden paths, etc.) compared to Mario 64.

SamIAm, I know you said you didn't want FPS, but you gotta give Metroid Prime a chance. It focuses on exploration (the spirit of the franchise) with some battles thrown in to keep up the excitement...but these battles are very manageable. I can't help but feel Metroid Prime is "perfectly suited" for newbies/"hesitant 3D gamers" and the game holds your hand in the 3D realm without completely insulting you. At least, that's how I felt.

Gamecube!

I'll have to disagree with you on Metroid Prime.  I still have yet to get myself to play thru that series.  I had the GC versions, & could play them much, then I got the Wii collection, thinking it might be easier to play with the Wiimote, but they still don't excite me.  Honestly, I totally enjoyed Other M, even though it was short, & held your hand a bit, & it did have a few moments of "What am I supposed to be searching for?!?" when it forces you into search mode.  One of these days though, I'll get myself to play thru the Primes.

Yeah, I absolutely HATE fps and even I liked Metroid Prime.

I thought Prime was "bleh".  Mostly because I hated that space jumping was reduced to a stupid extra boost, there was no fun wall jumping, and the combat was mostly "lock on, strafe, shoot" over and over and over.   It was fun for awhile, but near the halfway mark it got really tedious to battle stuff.

I liked the exploring though.  I really did.  The atmosphere in the game was friggin' Might and Magic caliber stuff.  I thought they did a kickass job of making the scenery really grab you.

Anyway, its still worth playing.  It's an FPS game for people who don't like FPS games, apparently. :)   You don't have to aim!

Don't play 2.  It's f*cking retarded.

The lack of normal fps battles is why I like Prime.

See, for non-fps types, fps combat is like this:

I'm walking along, checking out the scenery.

Someone I never even knew was there shoots me.

I die.

It's the opposite of fun. Sometimes I see the guy, but in an effort to hide or position myself to shoot him I just end up facing a wall or looking at the sky. Then I die.

I really really really hate fps.

I like Street Fighter. The dude you are fighting is always right there in front of you.

The best 3D action games are the Ratchet and Clank series.  I believe Crack in Time was the last solo player game, prior to All 4 One.  I typically dislike 3D action games, but that series has me hooked.  Only problem is the games got better as they went, so you only really need to play the newest one (not All 4 One or the new Tower Defense game).

Mario 3D Land on the 3DS was the most 2D-like level design of any 3D game.  It is basically linear and very straight forward.  Best game on the 3DS in my opinion and I think it is the 3D Mario game you should be playing.

Blast Corps for N64 was stellar- I think it qualifies as an action game.

Yeah, Prime's battles are scripted and obvious.

Doors shut, noises go off, alarms start bleeping, and then the enemies jump at you.   I don't really mind that.  I just didn't like how the battles are completely blehhh

you just lock on to whatever, hold the button, strafe around its shots, rinse/repeat.      Even fightning Ridley was all blehhhhhhhhh.

You just lock on, strafe around, and press the button when you're supposed to basically.  The action/dodging wasn't as fun as Super Metroid.    It's hard to top that game.

I like how we all ignored the Other M comments, I couldn't stand that game.

but aside from that, my recommendations are to get a dreamcast and futz about trying new cheap games, or to get a ps3 and get the HD collections.
personally Jak and Daxter is my favorite of them, but Ratchet ain't bad, that's for sure.

Yeah, the Jak & Daxter series is where it's at for me, though the 2nd one may turn people off a bit due to some imbalances in the difficulty.  I wish Naughty Dog would continue the series. Actually, I wouldn't mind if they'd do another HD collection with Jak X, Daxter, & Lost Frontier, as long as they gussie up Lost Frontier a bit.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. :)

I'm 50 stars into Mario 64, and I'm honestly not sure I want to finish it. I'm torn over how to feel about the game.

On one hand, there's a lot about it that's completely amazing for its time, and its clearly the work of some genius game developers.

On the other hand, I spend a lot of time yelling at the TV because of the control and the camera. I've gotten much better at the game in general, but the control is still something I have to "deal with", not something I can take advantage of. Instead of developing a sensation of direct control, I feel more like Mario is a ball in a pinball machine and I'm just working the flippers. Maybe that will come around with time.

I'm thinking it would be fun to play another 3D platformer-ish game that came out some relatively short time later and has a better camera system/control. It could help me appreciate the evolution of 3D game development, if nothing else.

If I ever come across a cheap Gamecube, I'll buy it. For now, maybe my Dreamcast is where I should go next.

Don't know if this exactly qualifies, but I'd like to put Klonoa 2 (PS2) on this smörgåsbord of recommendations.
I just recently played through it and I enjoyed it immensely! It still moves mostly in a 2D plane though.

Also, if you don't already own it, buy a PS2. It's an amazing system and it dug-on-got that 3D that those kids are into :D

Don't bother looking for something like that, it doesn't exist.

Here in the states you can get a GC for $20. The thing didn't have many games (by PS2 standards, nothing does) it never breaks, and the Wii is backward compatible so...GCs aren't worth a broke dick.

Personally, I quite like them. Good games were so infrequently released that when they did come out nobody noticed. The end result is that there are actually a couple dozen good titles that haters simply refuse to acknowledge. I can only partially blame them though. Every time I went to the store they basically just had Brazt, movie licensed games, and years-old Nintendo releases. The good stuff gets lost in the pile.

The Gameboy Player is wonder too, btw.

Klonoa 2 looks like a lot of fun, but it's also a little too 2D for this particular endeavor.

I enjoy 2.5D games a lot, though. I actually picked up Kirby 64 for about 500 yen, and it's the most fun I've had on the system so far.

EDIT: I was afraid of that, Zeta. Still, I'll keep pressing forward. I want to find something from the last 15 years that I really like.

Gamecubes in Japan tend to run a bit more, I'm afraid, but I may stumble upon a good deal yet.

I was never that crazy about Mario 64 either. I like it, but it's never held my interest long enough to beat it. I don't like 3d platformers in general.

That being said, if you have a Wii try out Super Mario Galaxy. I hate the genre, but I LOVE THIS GAME. It's the only game in the last few years that I've actually 100%'ed.

I never really liked Mario 64. I didn't play it at launch so that might have something to do with it lacking the newness of a 3D Mario.

I 120 starred Mario 64 when it came out and then I did it again with the DS remake.  In my opinion the game is awesome and it still holds up pretty well today.

HOWEVER, if I didn't play it on launch day after so much anticipation...  perhaps I would feel differently.  Nostalgia has definitely weighed in on my liking of the game.

My friends all got the game right when it came out on their N64s, and I thought the game was dumb as shit.  The whole game felt awkward and annoyed me, so I went back to playing SMW, and all of my sweet playstation games.
