Title: The new Hobbit movie thoughts...
Post by: BigusSchmuck on December 16, 2012, 01:08:54 PM
Anyone watch this yet? If you read the appendices and the slew of unfinished tales you may enjoy this. Otherwise its sleepy time for you! :)

Haven't seen it yet (probably this week), but I'm worried about it being stretched into three movies because I liked the LotR theatrical versions more than the extended cuts. Peter Jackson does best with time constraints and good editors, IMO.

Saw it yesterday.  The pacing had some issues at times, and some might not like the tone being a bit lighter, but it was still really enjoyable.  Just don't go in expecting that you'll get LotR again, and you should have a good time.

That's cool, it should be lighter, since the original book was.  I am glad that they're able to expand it more with the unfinished stuff.  Hopefully I'll see it this week.  My brother in law is visiting from China for another week & a half, & I know he'd love to see it.

I saw it.   It was excellent.   Aside from the part where that cocksucker Elijah Wood had his stupid cameo.

The pacing was pretty good.  The only part that seemed a bit boring was the pre-adventure seemed to take too long.

Seeing Gandalf do some sword-swinging was excellent.   The dude playing Bilbo did an excellent job.

and, the mountain troll scene ruled.

Overall it's already better than LOTR.

Overall, I loved the first part of the new trilogy.  Anyone that enjoyed the books, movies, games, or whatever from Tolkiens world will LOVE this.
The pacing was pretty good.  The only part that seemed a bit boring was the pre-adventure seemed to take too long.
I totally agree, it takes a while to really "get going", but having just recently read the hobbit this year, it was pretty awesome seeing what is faithful to the book and what is being added.  :)

Overall it's already better than LOTR.
I totally disagree LOL - I will have to see all three of these to see if the pacing issues continue before I say this is better or worse than LOTR.... For now, it works as an awesome prequel that adds more to the story.  :D

The LOTR movies were obnoxious and Elijah Wood is a tool.

My friend dragged me to the movie, because I always drag him to see stuff he doesn't want to see.  I did not like the LOTR Trilogy at all and I expected this to be equally lame.

I left the theater feeling as though I got my money worth.  There was faster paced and better action scenes in this movie and as a guy who could care less about the source material, it was just fun.

Though if I ever say "good morning" to someone and I get that shitty response, then I will punch him in the face.  Also, why even have the drawves there?  Obviously Gandalf just does everything, so the other guys are just hanging out.

They need their home!

Cause, Gold!

Also, to ask the usual question:

WHY NOT JUST FLY ON THE EAGLES ALL THE WAY TO THE MOUNTAIN.  WHY WALK THERE.  MORONS.

Plothole 9000.

Best part of the movie was when it was done and I went to take a piss there was a 500 pound guy in the bathroom loudly singing the dwarf song.  He wasn't just humming the tune either, he knew all of the words, which means he probably listened to it on his iPod all day before the movie.

Yeah, I guess that's how I felt only I was expecting better. I wasn't too impressed, but it was enjoyable at times, others not so much. Saw it in 3D cause of the show time was when I wanted to go, not because I really wanted to. Anyhow, I didn't know another trilogy was gonna be made around this, I thought this was a whole movie, but it ended without a conclusion which was a bummer...

Didn't the actor that plays Gandulf long since die BTW ??

No hes got prostate cancer though. I have to admit I did enjoy the movie, but what they should have done is keep the story of The Hobbit about Biblo and the dwarves and have all the extra stuff added in as the extended version when it comes out on DVD/Bluray. Seriously though, 2 songs? Hell the cartoon was called a musical and for a good reason. I haven't watched it in 3d yet, might do that with my brother when he comes from Japan next weekend. :) And hes got some PCE goodies too by the sound of things.

I would see the movie just to have this experience in the restroom afterwards. I AM NOT KIDDING (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.png)

Seriously. I'll pay for quality entertainment.

would this be good to bring my 7 year old? He isn't old enough to handle LOTR trilogy yet but thought since this is lighter it might be a good way to start him off.

Probably not, lots of decapitation despite some lighter moments

hey I turned out fine!   Beats being some sheltered dicknoodle that turns into a homicidal maniac by the age of 30 because he can't cope with anything but kitties, rainbows, and his mom.

We took our kids (ages 13,11,8, and 5) and they all enjoyed it.  I also JUST read the book to them aloud before bed for about 4 months... so.... They kind of knew what to expect.  :D

ok took the 7 year old, had to cover his eyes up a couple times, he got a little scared, but overall he was happy we went. He had a LOTR Lego set, now he was able to go back and act out some scenes. I think he is becoming a Tolkien fan.

As far as the movie itself, I saw it in 3D and really wish I didn't. Not because of the 3D effects, but because the movie was also shown in 48 Frames per second. The effect looked terrible and really distracted from the film for me. It is supposed to make the movie immersive, but for me it did the opposite, made everything look fake compared to the other LOTR movies I have seen. I for sure will see this again in 2D non 48 FPS.

I really enjoyed this movie. The pacing of the action scenes was well done, unlike LotR where they just go on and on and on... I was a little surprised by all the changes from the book, but in a strange way, they almost make it better. I don't mean to insult any hardcore Tolkien fans, but The Hobbit book feels more like a serial than a cohesive novel, so adding in subplots and LotR tie-ins and other such things make it seem more rounded. I didn't realize that some of the material might have come from other Tolkien works. If that's the case, then I think the fans can rest easy.

All in all, very enjoyable. It's definitely worth seeing. :)

The extra content from the unfinished tales and the Simiralian make up the rest.

My exact thoughts when watching the film!
The Hobbit was my favorite book when I was seven years old and, to an extent, still is. I even prefer the story of the Hobbit over the Lord of The Rings trilogy because it was just a simple children's story.

It shouldn't be an artificial trilogy! Doing that just messes up the story's pacing and makes it feel too short and to long at the same time.

And a way to milk the franchise.

I'll suspend judgement until I see it.

The movie meandered as much as the book, but it was still great.
