$60-70 ($85-90 when adjusted for inflation) for new Genny and SNES games, and yet people say today's games are too expensive.

Ain't that the truth.

I don't think a lot of people appropriate how much a cart based game used to cost back in the day.
I remember buying N64 games for $80 brand new form Wal-Mart.
Now a new game costs $20 less for me now a days and is significantly more advanced.

Probably the most expensive Genesis game I bought was Lethal Enforcers with the gun for 100 bucks before tax. I think Virtua Racing was about the same price on its release also. As much as I liked Lethal Enforcers, the price just felt too steep for the end products quality, so I took it back to EB games and got my money back after a few days.

Phantasy Star IV was also $100 when it first came out, sadly I only got rentals when I was a kid back then.
-
It's a blast to look at old catalogs.
Twisted Metal 2 !!
-
Phantasy Star had a tradition of premium prices- the first was something like $70 in 1988 iirc.
-
I remember that insert - I had my N64 reserved at Toys r Us on release day around that time. I'm still kicking myself for not unloading the system during that holiday craze where they were going for $600 a piece. Though I did play the hell out of Mario 64.
I also remember paying $79.99 for Pilotwings 64 new at Electronics Boutique and having massive buyer's remorse after playing it.

It goes to show that gaming has never been a cheap hobby .. Dang I had totally forgot about virtual pets! Great old school adds!

Thanks for posting. I keep forgetting how decent gaming still was in '96, with the Genesis and SNES still strongly represented. The Saturn also looks nice and the N64 was the closest I ever came to buying a system at launch. The PS selection looks like a pile of poo, like always.

Damn. That's insane.

$200 for the Saturn Net Link?!? I remember 'em being pricey but not that pricey.
-
The Saturn had the best deal, 3 free games with the system! What a bargain!
-
Even though I had about 100 Saturn games around the time the system was "new," that is the reason I never owned a Netlink.

Thanks for sharing. Would be awesome to one for turbob system.
