Title: I can't stop thinking about skating
Post by: soop on January 21, 2013, 10:36:58 PM
Ever since that thread about oldschool skating, I can't get skating out of my head. I've been watching videos, and now I'm starting to dream about it, so I've decided to build a deck. Let me know what you think:
7.5"/7.75" blank http://www.5050store.com/fifty-fifty-trademark-deck These are really good actually. Nice concave and great pop. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280900336207?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Ricta wheels. I wanted something hard and fairly small, but I thought these looked pretty neat. I could go white for a few quid cheaper, but white always turns to yellow anyway. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BONES-SWISS-Black-7-Ball-Skateboard-Scooter-Inline-Bearings-608-8mm-8-Pack-/120918200426?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Skateboarding_Skating_ET&hash=item1c2749506a Swiss bearings, natch. I can't justify ceramics, so it's between Swiss black and Super 6. I'd guess blacks are good enough, not decided
As for trucks, I'm thinking Tensor? I always used to use ti-lites because they were the lightest, and before that I had some grind kings, but not sure if they still exist. Any opinion? Also, What size truck is gonna be flush with a 7.5 or 7.75" deck? I might start doing a few primo tricks.
I think I'll look up what Mullen rides...
*edit* what with my talk of working out, this should make great cardio!
*edit 2* The truck companies are really good at advertising. I looked at Furys and wanted them, and I've just seen the new magnesium Tensors.. and now I want them. They're 2x the price of regular tensors though...

lol, me too. I so wanna go back for some sk8ing, but I have to face the fact that I'm just too old for starting again and also have no time and not the best environment to do so atm.
I probably will buy a deck to my son when he's a lil bit more grown up. then I can use it too from time to time (http://www.thegforum.ch/images/smilies/kicher.gif)

See I've had indies, and I thought they were heavy enough to make a difference. Just by swapping them out for Grind Kings, my Ollies got noticably higher. I swear it's not all in my head!

Yeah I hear you. I guess I'm a little old for it too, but I'm not about to go leaping down stairs, I think I'll stick to the little flip tricks, and the oldschool. Mullen may be Mullen, but he's in his 40's! Plus, I still dress like a skater anyway. You wear proper shoes ;P
Incidentally, can anyone else picture Arkhan doing this trick?

SHOVE IT TO CARTFLIP MCINDYGRAB.
Yeah I wanna get me a board again.
I kinda miss flailing around at top speeds, flying off shit.
I quit for "good" when they filled the local park area in with dirt because we kept skating there and cracking the ceramic tiles due to 1337 jumping
Gonna get me a Powell.
Have to try finding one of the sweet reissue boards. I'm all about dem fishtails.
Too bad hookups are NSFW. I'd browse those right now.... The boards are way too heavy, though.
My friends all used World Industries and Element, because they were homos. oh, and alien workshop, lol.
and BLIND
omfg blind.
Man, it's been awhile.

I was already considering it, but that thread (and now this one) convinced me to buy a longboard this spring. Specifically, this one: http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=27470
I'm too old and out of shape to do any street skating, but cruising along on the road by my cabin on a longboard sounds about right to me.

Lol I've never heard about blind, element, alien workshop and stuff until recently.
BACK IN THE DAY, we only knew powell peralta and santa cruz, monica airlines. Lol.

Ah hah !! lol So here is were all the Pcengine sk8borders went .. @ soop I recommend a 8.0 deck for nice stability some independent 149mm hollows, very sturdy but light they also will be flush with a 7.75 .. And some Bones street formula 53 to 55mm wheels .. They don't flat spot at all .. That in my opinion would be a pretty good setup to get back on the board .. Here's some trow away footage that I am in .. My few tricks start at 57 seconds into the video .. I also ride for a skateboard company called Sensitive sk8boards .. I have plenty of extra brand new decks sizes from 8.0 to 8.50 .. Would be willing to trade for some Pcengine goodies also ..

my thoughts too... I was thinking to get some Swiss black for £35. But mini-logo's for £9? Even if they blow out after a month, it's not a massive deal.
*edit* and knowing how to put a deck together helps. I remember my ex-girlfriend's older sister's boyfriend (bear with me) was a "skater". And he tried to "calibrate" her kid sisters deck. The f*cktard undid the wheel nuts to the point that the nylocks weren't touching the axle. I was livid, the poor kid was not far from a wheel spinning off and a faceplant.

I used to tweak my own decks all the time. I quickly learned that WD40 sucks ass and ruins bearings. Rollerskate plates are basically the same damn thing, so the skills I learned never vanished.
It's been awhile and I am now scouring the net looking at trucks. I've always been an Independent user. I might try something different. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Tensor sliders.
hoh man, I had those w/ the shockplates and shit.

I remember in junior high I had a pair of these hideous shoes. http://cf.mp-cdn.net/bb/b3/4aff61c792ce6ec546c0068d996d.jpg
Not only were they ugly as f*ck, they had a huge hole in the side of them after about two weeks of wear.

I used airwalks and chucktaylors
and vans.
Vans were always pretty solid, and survived really well.

I use to rock Airwalks also .. I had a pair called the Prototype 2's .. I also would were the Vision Street Wear high tops .. Late 80's sk8 shoes were some of my favorite sk8 shoes of all time ... http://airwalk.com (http://airwalk.com/) has some old school reissue limited edition Airwalks ..

@ Arkhan: I'm having real trouble deciding on trucks. In the end, I'm hopefully gonna swap 3 months XBL sub for an old pair of Destructos, but looking at all the improvements they've all made, they're doing a great job of selling me the trucks.
If I don't get the Destructo's, I've found a cheap set of Tensors on eBay for £25, which is cheaper than most everything else. Never skated them tho.

I never used Destructos.
But, the tensors I had, I got in trade from some kid. He said they were broke. All that was wrong was the idiot cracked the pivot cups. That was like, a 3$ fix.
I liked them alot.
OH man, tail protectors. Need those too.
It'll be fun. I'll be skating like its 1984. I don't think I can even kickflip with a board like that Powell reissue. It's too damn big! :)
It'll be great for shredding down the street, though.
LOL, anyone ever use banana boards?
Those f*ckers are dangerous. I had one that was so worn out on the tail from sliding around, that it was sharp enough to cut skin open.

What, those tiny little ones? If that's what you mean, they're f*cking deadly.

Yeah those hard plastic ones with the wide ass wheels.
They go retarded fast down hills. I flew off one once while flying down a hill, and dislocated my elbow.
I fractured my shoulder on a shitty old TMNT deck. Only significant bone I've ever broken. But those little f*ckers, I can't help trying to turn using the tail, and you invariably f*ck it off the back while it goes the other way, fast. Hateful little things.

Yeah, that's how the tail of mine got grinded down to a sharp blade-like object.

Yeah, that's how the tail of mine got grinded down to a sharp blade-like object.
Pressure flips would wear a board down to a shiv like object too.
As for trucks, I have been a pretty staunch Venture guy most of my skating life. Never had a complaint with them. For decks, I am currently riding a Girl board. I don't have an alliance to a single board company, I just look for a 7.5" width which is getting harder to find. For wheels, Hubba all the way. Tensor also makes some good bearings if you don't want to spring for Swiss.
Some companies I avoid like the plague... Nike DC Element Anything associated with Rob Dyrdek Zumiez (haha)
And as a natural segue, but don't mean to derail...how about the Tony Hawk GAMES?? Personal favorite is American Wasteland. Love the old school thrasher vibe of the story, and the skatepark you end up building while the story progresses is by far the best level in any of them. THUG2 was good too, since it included Skatopia (I went one year to the real skatopia, but that's a topic for another thread someday...). American Wasteland also incorporated playable loading times. Going through the tunnels between areas and skating basic boxes was fun while the level loaded.

Tony Hawk 2 is the only game worth playing.
I still prefer Skate or Die 1 though. Pool jousting rules everything.
I hope I don't buy trucks/wheels that don't work out well with that ripper reissue. That would blow dick.

Inspired by this thread, I downloaded Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD yesterday. It...uh...it's not nearly as fun as I remember. Tony Hawk 2 was one of my favorite games on Dreamcast, but I just don't seem to enjoy this game anymore.

I never liked the Tony Hawk games. I used to be happy with a tre flip. The game is very superficially concerned with actually skating.
I took a look at the "how to" vids with Tony Hawk and Mike Vallely yesterday. Pretty good, they'll come in useful!

Until the f*ckhead hockey players start shaving ice up on your crotch because they think its funny, and then you punch one in the eye and get thrown out.

How's this working out for you? Weather is starting to clear up here and spring is finally feeling like spring. I've skated a few times over the last couple weeks. Feels great to get the legs conditioned again. It's been a loooooooooooong winter here in new England. I'm on the fence about new shews. I've been tearing up a pair of emericas, but I can't seem to let them go. NOT loving the new enjoi deck, but a 7.5 width is getting harder to find these days...

Funny you should mention it. I was just in a skate shop yesterday checking out long boards. They only had a small handful, though, and none of them seemed right for me. Will probably buy one from SoCal by the end of April.

Still too damn cold for me. Also, money could be an issue. Fingers crossed O__o
Oh yeah, the University just built a sweet little skate spot right by my house, with all these perfect marble blocks. Then they kind of ruined it by putting arm rests all over the blocks. Jerks.

They literally filled the park in with dirt by my house because of skateboarding.
We'd crack all the plaster tiles while jumping off the stairs, lol
