Today I picked up a Super Game Boy to play my meager Game Boy/Game Boy Color collection on a TV when the Gamecube isn't hooked up. I currently have Bonk's Adventure, Alleyway, and R-Type DX (Game Boy Color), all of which I enjoy playing. Almost beat Bonk's Adventure tonight on the Super Game Boy. :D
My little brother had a Game Boy back when they were new, but I don't remember playing too many games for it. I had a Turbo Express so there really was no reason to stoop to the lowly Game Boy. :P
So I really don't know much about the Game Boy's library. How has it held up? Any must have games? Any games that didn't get a lot of fanfare bitd but really stand out now?
This is mostly to play on a TV - I have a Game Boy Advance LT SP, which I've been playing more of lately while my Express is turning into RoboCop at Steve's place, but my old eyes just can't take handheld gaming like they used to.
Any suggestions?

Metroid II!

Metroid II!
Absolutely.

There are about 100 must play games on the Gameboy and Gameboy Color.
I love the original Mario Land, because it is the most unique side-scrolling Mario to this day (except for Mario 2 NES, but that doesn't count). Gargoyle's Quest is pretty awesome too. You definitely should give a Pokemon game a chance too.
You got at least 100 games to get though, so get cracking!

Nice. I use my Super GB for: Link's Awakening DX, Dragon Warrior Monsters 1-2, Bonk's Adventure & Bonk's Revenge, Ultima RoV 1-2, Metroid...

Solar striker
Tertris (it really is the best home version)
Skate or Die: bad n rad
Nemesis
Castlevania belmonts revenge
-
final fantasy adventure, final fantasy legends 1-3, super mario land 1-3, nemesis. Also, if you have kids, you can get a gameboy camera and printer and mod the super gameboy to run the printer as well as add a headphone jack for much better bass and sound.

Donkey Kong '94. That thing is THE SHIT. Its a f*cking great game to begin with but it also uses more Super Gameboy capability than any other title.
-
Castlevania The Adventure I and II.
A lot of people hate the first game, but honestly it's a good solid challenge, and has one of the best levels in the entire series. Very unappreciated game, I really hate Legends though.
Itchy & Scratchy's Miniture Golf Madness.
The best Simpson's based game ever. It's absolute genius.

I enjoyed the Dragon Warrior remakes.

A great game. I must have around 150 GB carts, but for now I say DK and Mole Mania.
TRUST ME ON THIS.

Super Mario Land 3: Warioland
Fantastic platformer. My favorite on the system.
-
Metroid II
Nemesis I & II (or Gradius: Interstellar Assault)
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Galaga & Galaxian
Also, if you can track down a copy of Sagaia for a halfway decent price, it's a solid shmup with some great bosses. Oh, and you owe it to yourself to get Tetris, as it's the best version of the game I've yet played and it's dirt cheap.

Some of my favorites from when I had a GB:
Tetris (duh)
Cosmotank
Castlevania I & II
Heiankyo Alien
Operation C
Final Fantasy Legend I, II, and III
Final Fantasy Adventure
Sword of Hope
Altered Space (with Follin tunes)
Fortified Zone
Mysterium
Super Mario Land 1 and 2

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions! Keep 'em coming! I think the only games listed so far that I've played (and intend to pick up) are Tetris and Super Mario Land. I've seen some of these at the local used-stuff stores so I may have to pick a few up soon. :)

Makes me teary eyed to see so much love for the little green screen goblin  :D
-
SMB 3: Wario Land is a blast to play on the tv. The B&W GameBoy version of Wario Land II has very good Super GameBoy support, btw.

does anybody know if there is a boxyboy type clone on the GB?

Boxyboy is a port of the classic Soukoban. It's on a lot of systems, actually.

YES! That was it. I could have sworn I knew of one, but it had escaped me. +1 to you sir.

Boxxle was a game I played quite a bit as a kid, even though I remember thinking "why aren't I playing Robocop?"
BoXXXle is a game I have played more of since I have become an adult.

When I thought I took it to the extreme, I was out extremed. lol

Ok remind me what can play on Super Gameboy that can't on GameCube Gameboy player? Do color games work on it?
-
The GBC was made after the Super Gameboy so the black carts will work as they would in a regular Gameboy (no color) and the clear carts won't work at all.
The GB Player is overall better than a Super Gameboy since it offers 480p component video and can play GBC-only and GBA games. However, none of the special Super Gameboy functions (ie: special borders in Toshinden, extra colors in Donkey Kong '94) will work with the GBP. The GBP sees as GB games as just plan GB games.
So...you kind of need both.

eis boxle :)

I haven't played much Super Gameboy since it does weird things with my TV, but last year sometime I got back into Gameboy stuff and the games have surprisingly held up very well. Most of these have been mentioned, but my favorites:
Donkey Kong 94 (My favorite Gameboy game, best played on a SGB.)
Super Mario Land (surprisingly still fun)
Super Mario Land 2 (weak for a Mario title, but still fun)
Mario Land 3: Wario Land (LOVE THIS GAME)
Castlevania (dat MUSIC, although C2 is better)
Kirby's Dreamland (easy, but fun)
Dr. Mario
TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan
-
Play contra, Nemesis II, kirbys dreamland, etc. :)
-
I recently started final fantasy adventure. Good bite sized Zelda clone so far.

This has one of the most hilariously depressing moments in the history of video games.
The punch line is something like "I can't jump" and it involves the robot.
I laughed. I cried. I WTFed.

Aerostar
Balloon Kid
Battle Unit Zeoth
Contra Alien Wars
Kid Icarus
Any Kirby game
Mega Man series
Ninja Boy 1&2
Ninja Gaiden

QIX
Revenge of the Gator
Project S-11

Groovy - I've seen a few of these at local used-stuff stores for ~$5 so I'll have to pick up a few next time I'm out that way.
Maybe it's because I don't have component cables for my GC, but I think the Game Boy games actually look better on the Super Game Boy.
-
Project S-11 is a clear case GBC game so that won't work then. Forgot about that :p

Agreed, i have the super gameboy and gameboy player. i find the super game boy provides better overall look as well as control.the gamecube controller for me is just laid out all wrong for good control. I know that sounds dumb since you only need a d-pad and two buttons, but it just does not feel right to me.
-
That's why there is a Gameboy Controller for both SFC and Cube. They are rad.
As for video, I haven't though about it much. The SNES has just about the tastiest video output of any console ever, so I guess the SGB could be better. I haven't viewed a GC over composite in a decade though so I really don't know.
-
I want one of those controllers to, but people ask way to much money for them. The gameboy player can clearly play more games, but overall the super gameboy gets the job done for me. If i had one of those controllers for the gamecube i might feel different.

I bought the Hori Gameboy Player Controller for $9 at Gamecrazy. Now it goes for $100 f*cking dollars.
