Title: Last NES game you played?
Post by: bob on February 23, 2013, 04:24:27 PM
I just got done testing about 60 NES carts that I got a hold of.
Cleaned the contacts, pop it in a retrobit console, make sure it fires up, rinse, repeat. So today, between eye-bleeds, I was able to muscle through about 30 seconds of 60 different games. The last one being Silk Worm (not terrible), which I actually tested in my genuine, toaster, NES.
During this madness, i came to one conclusion...these retrobit machines are garbage.
Built like shit with terrible connections.  Worst part about it, the pin virtually locks the game in and it feels like R2D2 going through a meat grinder when you finally pull the game out.

There is just an unparalleled satisfaction of real NES hardware.
I still have mine from childhood, and on my third 72 pin.

So what was the latest, actual NES game you played?  (No ROM/emulation/VC)

I think it was Jeopardy a few years ago. I keep my NES games in individual zip-loc bags, after cleaning the contacts with alcohol.

I have two official Nintendo game holders and then one rubbermaid container that holds 40-50 NES games. No boxes unfortunately. I do have a good sum of manuals for the games though.

On actual hardware? Damn it's been a long time it's hard to remember. I have an orginal NES as well as the top loader but not the real estate to keep them hooked up. I play some of my favorite NES games on the Wii VC for the time being. The last game I played through was Faxanadu. Love that damn game, probably my favorite NES game next to Castlevania III and the original Zelda.

The last NES session I had was with the Taxan version of G.I. Joe.

Worth buying?  Looks like a decent run 'n gun and I was thinking of hunting down a loose copy.

I played Rolling Thunder for the NES a few months ago.  Didn't get too far, but the controls are pretty good.

It is a fun action packed game. Each Joe has their own unique attributes such as jumping ability and gun type. I'd definitely hunt one down for a decent price. I was actually able to find both versions of G.I. Joe for the NES. I've played the Capcom version a little and it plays very similarly to the Taxan version.

Thanks for the insight on G.I. Joe games.   I haven't played either, but they look fun.  They must be decent games or maybe not common based on prices they sell for on fleabay.   Might have to get both if I can find them for a decent price.

rollin thunder for the FC is a quite good port of the arcade. at least it plays just like the arcade. also grafix are quite good for a namcot FC game.

Almost makes you wonder if the failure of the Turbo here in the states wasn't planned. We got some good games, but some are just plain bad. Of all the games that they could have ported over or developed here, why did they pick what they did? Ok, back on topic. :-"

I love running over humans in Jackal. It sounds sadistic, but it is really satisfying. Nice little touches in this game.

The last NES game I played was T&C Surf Designs. I freaken love everything about that game! The awesome music, challenging levels and the old school vibe it brings back. I use to love rocking the Town And Country T-Shirts when I was a little dude back in the 80's. Anytime I play that game it just takes me back !!

Last week I was playing Kirby's Adventure, the plan is to finish it before the 20th anniversary in May.

I record my sessions using a top loader, but my original NES is still working after almost 25 years and no 72 pin connector change. And I used it heavy in the late 80's and early 90's.

Nowadays, you're really lucky if an X360 survives after 5 years of moderate use.

I still have my original NES from '85. I'm on my third pin and it's dead again. I have over 125 NES carts and no way to play them.  :(

I've had the same NES for over 15 years and I've never changed the 72 pin connector.  It's worked pretty well for a solid 10 years but became pretty erratic after that.  I followed the instructions in the YouTube link above a few years ago and it's been working like a champ ever since with every game I thrown at it.

Well, you could get a Retro Bit NES clone. They're only 20 bucks and I hear compatibility is good. I'm thinking about getting one to replace my FC Twin since it's finicky on the best of days.

Compatibility is okay if you don't intend to play Koei games, aren't super picky about colors being correct or sound being perfect. For the price they're not a bad product, but you're a lot better off with the original hardware overall.

Those 72-pin connectors vary widly in quality, usually the aftermarket ones grab your games like a vice grip and you don't even need to push down to fire them up. I'm a big proponent of using the top loading NES, but these days they're costly and don't have composite out without a mod.

I have an original system, but I prefer to just leave my flashcart in it to avoid wear and tear on the connector. That's why I use a clone to play my original carts.

My 72-pin is pretty damn tight. At least it works on the first try most times as long as the cart is clean.

Ice Climber

1987: As a kid I knew that the game was fun, but it was SOOOOOO DATED. Plus, I was looking for more depth back then (when I had time, ha!)

2013: Now, I love this game 1,000x more than I did as a kid. Breaking stuff has always been a satisfying element of video games, but there is something special about breaking stuff in Ice Climber. BRILLIANT.

I actually have a retrobit clone, but it suffers from the "vice grip" problem that Dan mentions. Aside from the shit build quality, I feel like games are getting destroyed when I pull them out.

I have a few different NES clones. I have a retromini x that works pretty well as a handheld NES with wireless controllers. But again, suffers the same compatibility problems all NES on a chip based clones do. I've seen those retrobit clones before but have never bothered to pick one up as I have multiple NES systems (both top loaders and toasters), a few other clones and a Famicom.

Yes. First off you have to preload some SAV files on the PowerPak CF card (they have blank ones on their side and you might already have them on your cart).
Then, when you are ready to power down, you have to charge the reset button for about 5 seconds, then release. You will be back at the PowerPak prompt where you can select which SAV file to write to.
The next time you play, select the SAV file to load at the last screen before you start the game (the one that has the blank lines for GG codes).

It's got some really tough spots and the clues are lame (or missing?) and I remember getting stuck several times back in the day. I'm pretty sure I didn't resume playing until a friend explained how to get past certain parts...that's a flaw in the game (lack of intuitive clues). I don't use FAQs/cheats/videos/whatever (even back in the day) and it was frustrating to get stuck (missing an item) and not know where in the f*ck to go.

Zelda 2 is a great game, still, but that's because I love flawed games with a goddamn spirit. Zelda 2 has moxy. Zelda 2 wasn't the easy cash-in* it could have been (upgraded version of Zelda 1). Zelda 2 was pioneering...I wish there were more games like it (Exile on our beloved TG-16/PCE is a direct descendent of Zelda 2).

I love games that mix genres/mechanics/etc. (hybrids), but I understand that hybrid games are commercially less feasible. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png) For example: it is difficult to appease all customers when customers have very particular preferences: Turn-based RPG fans want more of the same, ARPG fans (overhead) want more of the same, ARPG fans (sideways) want more of the same, etc. etc. Hybrid games run the risk of (at some point) leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

FIGHTING WORDS: ARPG fans who lack the demanding platforming skills that platform-afficianandos live by might start hatin' on Zelda 2.

BOTTOM LINE: I love hybrid games that pull from differernt genres. Zelda 2, you are loved. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

* Sadly, for reasons discussed above, most folks would have preferred a predictable sequel to Zelda 1. They would have lauded it. I would have loved it, too. But, now, given the history of the series, I am even more appreciative of Zelda 2's role/place.

Quoted for truth! Zelda II being a different game from Zelda I is exactly why I was so disgustingly excited for it back '88-'89. Hard as hell and I only completed it once when I was young. I came close last year. I made it all the way to Dark Link and tried to beat him without "cheating" (those that have been there know what I am talking about) and got my ass handed to me. I didn't have the strength to endure the last palace again to retry it.

IRON TANK for NES because it KICKS ASS and if only SNK made more games before they wasted their energy on shite fighting shite.

NEO GEO owners lament the demise of SNK at ___________________________ (whatever) point in time (before PlayMore, I reckon).

I lament the demise of SNK well-before KOF 2022 (whatever).

Back on topic: IRON TANK (NES) F*CKING RULES.

NEWSFLASH:  I have Iron Tank in my NES collection and I have never played it.

I've been playing some Galaga and Kyukyo... er, Twin Cobra on the NES lately.  Twin Cobra is a pretty impressive port, considering it's an NES.  Lots of fun to play.

Galaga...  eh.  I love Galaga, and this port isn't bad, but it's missing something.  I think maybe some of the music has been cut.

YES! I didn't know you still played lots of FC/NES. I think I spend most of my time playing FC/NES...

ANYWAY, I am currently playing GUNSMOKE and, damn, I have always liked going back to this game. I just love it. It is such a seemingly simple variation of the standard shoot-em-up/run-n-gun mechanics, but it works and really has its own unique identity (diagonal shooting, baby!). I wish more games did this sort of thing successfully (that is, experiment with standard mechanics of a genre...BUT without BREAKING/overly-complicating the controls).

So, yeah, .Gun.smoke. Not that this game is perfect...it just feels so damn good to shoot all the bastards. I like the controls.

I love Gun.Smoke.  I bought it BitD at a video store for like $7, when they were thinning out their NES rental library.  I'd never even heard of it.  I didn't have a manual, and there wasn't an Internet back then, so for years I didn't know that you could hit A+B to shoot straight ahead.
Title: Re: Last NES game you played?

Gun.Smoke is one of my favorite games for the NES!

Since all of my friends bitd had an NES, I never felt compelled to get one, always opting for the alternative (first the SMS, then the TG-16) so there was more gaming goodness to go around.  When I finally got around to picking up an NES back in college ('99-ish) a lot of my NES gaming memories were gone so I got to experience the library from almost untainted eyes. However, Gun.Smoke was one of the few games that I have fond memories of playing as a kid and still love playing today.

Batman Returns, which reminded me of TMNT 2 for NES.  Not a surprise, considering Konami did it.

Pinball Quest.  I got interested in this game from the recent thread about pinball games.
Basically, each screen makes you complete an objective (kill all the monsters, hit a certain door with your ball) in order to move on.
As the screen progresses upward, the playfield expands and you can move your flippers from screen to screen in order to follow the ball.
The physics were quite basic, but playable.

Speaking of which, I think Jaleco made some pretty quality games overall.  I haven't looked into the whole library, but this, Shatterhand, Astyanax, and Bases Loaded keep me entertained even to this day.  I'm sure they had some duds, but overall, they are pretty underrated in my opinion.

Image Fight is hard as nails, but I can surprisingly make it farther in the NES version than the PCE version.  For that reason I like them equally (though I keep trying to get better at the PCE version...)

Last NES game I played was TMNT. It still kicks me down and then points and laughs at me.  Man, NES games are unforgiving. :D

US game, it's an action-RPG hybrid. It's well known for a particularly strange plot twist.
Its full title is Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger
It's a pretty good game overall if you're into 8-bit RPG-ish games.

I just picked Twin Cobra without knowing it was the same game as Kyukyoku Tiger.  So is kyukyoku tiger - tiger heli?  Obviously nes Tiger Heli is a totally different game - im confused!

Anyway Twin Cobra is pretty damn good nes shoot em up!  Might have something to do with the fact that i love kyukyoku tiger.

Twin Cobra is the sequel to Tiger Heli.  Both are outstanding games for the NES. Twin Cobra is a great version of Kyukyoku Tiger.  I love how when you die you don't start of at a pre-disposed checkpoint.

Nope no real differences other than price.

I'm shocked at the price of the NES one. I bought it two years ago for about $80, cart only. I thought I overpaid. Now its easily 200-300. Not sure why.

Its a solid port though. Simple but fun.

Alright, good.  I was thinking of picking up FC Genjin because I liked Bonk's Adventure on the Turbob a lot, but I can only play it on my TE currently. :/ That & I'm in need of some good action platformers for my fami.  I've only got Metroid & Bubble Bobble currently, but I'm thinking of getting Ryuga: Ninja Crusaders, Fudomyouoden (Demon Sword), and Getsu Fuuma Den.

Also, is Nazo no Murasamejo for the FDS any good?  Looks fun...

There are some good ones on the NES, but to achieve true 8-bit Nintendo shooty greatness, you really need to get a famicom/converter, if you haven't already.  Crisis Force, Gradius II, and Uchuu Keibitai SDF are just a few really good reasons to do so, especially Gradius II.  It outshines the first game in absolutely every possible way.

I didn't know Silkworm had a NES release.

Top Gun was a favorite of mine bitd. I remember sometimes just letting the title screen music loop because it was so awesome in that Konami kind of way. The AVGN has helped to ensure it suck status but I feel it isn't that bad.

James Rolfe has said that he doesn't actually hate all the games he reviews, he just goes with what he thinks will be funny because AVGN is a parody of easily angered/excessively negative people. This makes it really annoying when you talk to people who say Game X is bad without ever playing it just because it was on AVGN.

Not everyone knows this though. Once a game enters AVGN territory it's eternally labeled as bad in the minds of the majority.

muscling my way through Castlevania III right now.  Can't beat the pirate ship level.

I was recently introduced to the sound difference between the JP and US cart versions of this game and I have to say the added bass on the JP version is a very nice touch.

Last few weeks for me.

Double Dragon -- couldn't quite finish it ill try again soon

Rescue the Embassy Mission -- fun but to short to hold your attention for to long the first of the 3 screens is the best

NES Play Action Football -- always liked it even though the players move painfully slow, returning kicks and interceptions is a blast

Robin Hood -- nice action RPG would have finished but I forgot the continues are limited

I just picked up Ghost Lion I doubt it will be anything that holds my interest but I never played it and it has been on my list for a long time

RC PRO AM is still an utterly fantastic game. It's a challenge to get through, too (I've dine it, but not recently...I don't remember all the tracks/strategies for the final 1/3 of the game).

Totally. After I abandoned NES for TG-16/Genesis back in the day, my friend howled with delight at how awesome gems kept popping up on NES (SCAT, GUN NAC, etc.)

SCAT makes me think of Forgotten Worlds.
