Title: What Bernie is playing... :)
Post by: Bernie on March 03, 2013, 01:41:41 AM
In the same vein as Necromancer, I decided to start a thread with details on what I am currently playing on the Turbo.  This may include games I have completed or started, whatever.   =P~  Anyway, in the last several years with current consoles, I've found that I can only play an hour or two at the most before I am ready to put it down for the day.  I have always thought that it was because I'm older and have shit to do, ect..  However, I find myself playing the Turbo for HOURS, and I do mean hours.  Why is that, I asked myself....  Well, for me it's obvious and just proves that retro games had to do something to lure you in, besides bombard you with awesome graphics.  For me, it has always been about story line and game design.  Today's games are still fun, but I find myself saying I will play an hour and put it down.  With my Turbo, that is not the case.  I actually dont want to put it down.  Just yesterday I had to put it down, because my damn thumb was starting to not function..   :D  Now, that brings back a memory or two.  Anyway, on to the games....

I started Ys Book I & II not too long ago, and managed to beat it yesterday afternoon.  I believe I logged in almost 6 hours playing yesterday, which is an amazing feat for me, since I haven't played any game that long since Final Fantasy X.  I managed to beat Darm, after he handed me my ass over and over and over and over...yeah you get the idea right?  But the game was just built to make me WANT to keep going.  That says a lot for a game, especially in today's gaming market.

Anyway, this morning I started Ys III, and right away I am impressed with how much better it looks and sounds than the SNES version.  I played this game on the SNES years ago, and loved it, but damn it looks soooo much better on the Duo.  I cannot get over how vastly improved it is.  Now, granted I had it for the Duo all those years ago, but I never messed with it since I had beaten the SNES version...  Oh well, good things DO come to those who wait I guess.  So, with that..  I will start my game journey.

So pumped for you!  Great thread!

I'm super excited to play Y's for the first time, and I'm kind of glad I never played any of the other ports.  I'll get the true experience on the true console.

There's just something about the Ys games on the Turbo. Even though I have other games that I haven't finished or even played yet, I still find myself putting them down to play Ys yet again... even though I've beaten it multiple times.

I played Y's I & II the last summer. Very nice games!
Still waiting for a good price to buy the third!
Good luck playing!

Mmm, Ys.  Great games to start off such a thread, and I presume that Ys IV is on deck?

Man, that tower in Ys I drove me nuts.  I felt like Adol was actually walking around the disc. :)

Yeah ys III is way better on the DUO although those choppy scrolling backgrounds still annoy the crap out of me. Some backgrounds still look okay being a little choppy but the main town you start off in is absolutely horrible. Hudson would have been better off to have no scrolling at all there.

YES!!!  This is the one thing that annoys me...  It's very distracting, and actually makes it harder to focus on your character.  My only complaint so far though.

I third the YS3 is way better on the Duo. My only wish it was longer and harder, I finished it in one sitting a shame really...

I think all versions of Ys 3 are equally great.  The choppy scrolling on the CDrom2 was totally uncalled for and just drives me crazy.  All the 16-bit versions are too short, but a blast to play through on any given afternoon.  :)  I never understand the hate towards the SNES or Genesis versions.  Sure the CD has the best audio and the cutscenes, but it's still the same base game with a different twist from each of the 16-bitters strong/weak points.  I love 'em all.

For something completely awesome/new for Ys III fans, play The Oath in Felghana on PSP.  That game is simply amazing to play through.

Also- What's Bernie playing today?

Ys III on PCE is amazing, thats for sure. But honestly, if the Genesis version had come out on Mega/Sega CD, I would say that would be the definitive version of Ys III. It had the great graphics, smooth scrolling, and I love the genesis six button pad. If it had red book audio, it would have been my version of choice.

Though that didn't happen, so the PCE wins hands down for me.

The downfall with anything Genesis is that lack of colors. I'd sooner take more colors of the DUO over smooth scrolling backgrounds of the Genesis any day.

I've only played the TG-16 and the SNES versions and I honestly like 'em both!  I picked it up on the Turbografx-16 back when it was new and only picked up the SNES version a year or two ago, so I have had a longer relationship with the TG-16 one, but the smooooooth scrolling and some of the more detailed sprites found in the SNES version are really nice as well.

Hmmm I feel qualified to say that since I was playing Sega stuffs from Bernie and PCE stuffs from Bernie today.  Thanks BTW!  That anything and I mean anything would be better on the PCE than Sega.  While the Sega stuff is cool, it's just a place for average platformers and RPG's.  THE PCE IS FOR AWESOMENESS. Ys3=awesomeness therefore PCE WINS!

But seriously, I really enjoyed YsIII, just not nearly as much as 1 and 2.  I don't know what it's missing for me, it just doesn't feel the same to me after you get done, somehow less epic.

For myself i prefer Ys 1&2 more then III.I still think Ys III was more of a filler title that should have been more.Still it's remake, the oath in felghana was more of a complete game and flesh out characters to.

HOLY CRAP.

It's been a long time since I've played all the TURBO Ys games...

...IF I RE-PLAY THEM, I will HAVE TO PLAY THEM ALL...

I know it doesn't matter so much (story-wise), but I think they are best enjoyed in the order of their release.

STATUS: This will not happen anytime soon. BUT I AM WILLING TO NOT WATCH THE BOND FILMS IN ORDER OF THEATRICAL RELEASE in order to play YS games on PCE.

ALSO: Did you know that I'll want to play the SMS Ys FIRST, then play TURBO Ys Book I & II? Hell yes, that's what I want to do. There's a special place in my heart for the SMS Ys.

I refuse to replay the Ys games until the pressed Ys IV translation comes out.

DO IT!

The Genesis can be quite clever with Colors.  Sonics and Dynamite Heddy and Ranger X makes plenty of use of color.  Hell even Toy Story has well over 200 colors on screen at one point.  I prefer the animation of Earthworm Jim or Aladdin any day.

I know what Bernie isn't playing.

ANYTHING HE HAD SAVES FOR ON HIS DUO.

Bernie's curse has apparently been transferred to me.  :?

Last weekend I went up to Bernie's for a quick visit before I move 1K miles away to the Kansas City, MO area.  We're all about the OBEY.  we were checking out home brews, translations, all sorts of random stuff.

We did a bunch of co-op.  Dungeon Explorer is still better as a co-op game. (don't pick the Elf - he sucks) Bonk 3...  WTF!?  It's basically unplayable unless both players have already memorized the game.  There are areas that, as far as we experienced, were unpassable playing co-op.  Lots of fun, in a crazy, "let's turn this off and got drink beer" sort of way. :/

But then the unthinkable happened.  Bernie wanted to show me Vasteel since I mentioned I'd never played it before.  Groovy, I thought.

We start it up and it tells us that there isn't enough space for a save file - overwrite?  Of course we selected "No".  Then I played the game for awhile (great game, but much more challenging than Military Madness at the start - and what's with that elevator music!?).

I don't remember exactly what happened next, but we soon realized that Vasteel had messed up the internal saves.  So we tried to come up with a hucard that had the ability to delete specific files.

To make a short story long, all of his saves were wiped.  So apparently the curse has found a new host.   8-[

I still have Sorcerian sitting here in a box for you Bernie. When I go back though and pull stuff out of my closet I will slap it in a mailer and send it to you so you can play it again.

Where'd ya get stuck?  I've never had any such problem, even when playing with my nephews (they don't know the game at all).

We never actually got "stuck", just found areas that were VERY aggravating when playing with two people.

When I talked my wife into playing the HuCard version with me a couple of months ago, we got stuck in the tube lever where you can only advance by getting sucked into tubes.  Sometimes it would suck one of us in but not the other and then vice versa.  :(    After trying to figure it out for 15 minutes, we gave up, and she hasn't played any more video games since.

I've also had a similar experience getting stuck in the tube area playing Multiplayer Bonk 3.

The multiplayer was clearly hacked on to the game.

I was playing Bonk 3 with my 9 year-old, who is a novice with console games. I guess we didn't make it too far yet, but so far it's been OK (but definitely would be worse if she didn't have my guidance).

On a side-note: it's weird to watch someone who is rough with even the simplest platforming moves: jump in place, run and jump, attacking while stationary versus in motion, etc.

I know!  My little one took like a fish to water with touch screen games (Angry Birds, Bad Piggies, Where's My Water) but using a real controller  is alien to him.  About the only game he likes to play is Devil's Crush, which is about as simple a control setup as you can get. :)

Yes! And, similarly, my daughter loves Galaga—again, it's appeal might lie in it's simplified controls. Alien Crush is a tad simpler, though  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

That reminds me: There's a local restaurant we frequent that has a Ms. Pac Man/Galaga cabinet and we play it every time we're there.  For the longest time he only wanted to play Galaga (and we play together - I move and he shoots) but the last time we went there he wanted to play Ms. Pac Man.  It was like he had reached level 2 in joystick gaming. :)  We ended up making it to level 3 taking turns. :)

That's awesome! When I finally buy Pyramid Plunder, my daughter is going to dig it because she, too, has been playing some Pac Man/Ms. Pac Man. I'm not the biggest Pac Man fan...never intrigued me the way most other games have...

I know its not turbob, but I started a game of Dragon Warrior I today on the NES.  This has to be my all time favorite/go back to game.  As simple as it is, I can literally play it over and over.
