I'll say it again: I love the artwork! So retro! My favorite part is the bird perched on another bird, which is perched on the truck. The loot in the back of the Jeep is pretty sweet too.

You can thank my womanoid for the exciting cover art. She somehow pulled that off out of my description of "draw the dude flying up a hill in a jeep, with loot in the back"
and Paul did the coloring. Had I done it, it'd look like Insanity. We don't want that.

Not too bad. just the little tab part of lid. You should have seen the mailer that it came in though... completely tore up and in a round ball, all retaped, to the point I didn't know what it was until I looked at the label. I have no clue what they did to it. I'm going to replace it with the one from that stupid old MSR case. lol.
Seriously no need to worry, I'm just going to through a new lid on it.

Title: Re: The "I've got my PYRAMID PLUNDER" Thread

It needs SystemCard 3.0.
It's more than a pacman clone. There's powerups, multiple enemies/tilesets, scrolling maps, and music!
Title: Re: The "I've got my PYRAMID PLUNDER" Thread
Post by: turboswimbz on March 15, 2013, 09:35:07 AM
I'd call it pacman on steroids - while the concept is very similar, there is a lot more to it with the different enemies on each level, down right huge maps, and power-ups that add several layers of strategy. Yeah while it's not a huge action packed platformer or RPG, it's a very good puzzler/strategy game programmed solidly with a lot of attention to detail on gameplay. Looks good, sounds alright, and most importantly it's a lot of fun. (running from those damn skeletons is quite exciting 8-[ - and a pain they keep getting me #-o) It is a must try.
If Ark doesn't mind me putting in my 2 cents.
Now to get a decent high score...

You're allowed to put in whatever cents you want :)
I don't mind. We kind of need feedback to know how we did!
I will say that making the music was a giant pain. I tried to get Egyptian sounding music for the levels, complete with 80s-arcade-esque soundeffects. It wasn't easy to get the tunes to happen. :(

Yeah, purty cool, looks very professional/authentic. I do find the "Prepare for your greatest adventure!" marketing bit a little suspect, though... ;) But yeah, it is very cool to see that fans can produce CD games for an old system and get them pressed.

Just that every game I've played so far had the save files in all uppercase. I figured they were all like that. Not a big deal, just felt like picking is all. It's all good.
Game is great and a lot of fun, that's what really matters. Poses a challenge in the later levels which is good.

The game arrived in one piece too. Aside from the sticky residue left on the front case from the packaging tape, there aren't any cracks, broken hinges or anything.
This was a really, really well done effort! The poster looks like it could easily pass as 80's/90's full page ad you'd find a gaming magazine, from the fleshed out hand drawn art down to the energy-driven marketing!
Amazing stuff, Aetherbyte raises the bar again! :D

TELL ME MORE about this poster. As Keranu said, it perfectly captures the days of yore (which I love)...specifically, who created the artwork I see (zombie-cum-alien-cum-little-shop-le-horrors).
Anyway, the presentation in the poster is spot-on perfect (to my tastes, anyway) as a tongue-in-cheek homage to a past era.

The music makes me laugh; and I mean that in a good way. I find myself humming along with it because it's pretty fun.
Anyway, I had my kid play this the other night. He's five and really getting into video games. I've had him play other "old-school" games like Bomberman and Bonk, and he's been pretty enthusiastic about them. But when he discovered that he could try to beat my high score in Pyramid Plunder, suddenly the game became even more appealing for him. He's now playing it with purpose!
Poor kid, though... Right now, the high score table looks like this (After the few stock initials, of course):
JAL EAL EAL EAL EAL
He just can't seem to knock his old man off the mountain quite yet!
Speaking of of the high score initials, I noticed "ARK" in there. Is there any significance to the other initials?

All of the 'real' scores (ie, not even thousands/hundreds ) are real people who played the game. Most of the others are people I know. But no one made the high score table on suicide mode, so that's just an ad :)

Well, I got Pyramid Plunder a week ago, but other than a 2-minute try at MGC, I hadn't had a chance to play it until last night. I really enjoy the dash button a lot. The game seems too easy on 'Easy' mode and too difficult on 'Suicide' mode, so that's good I suppose.
Three immediate thoughts after playing it with a friend and one of my sons for about 45 minutes:
1. This Pac-man clone is great! Dash button and powerups are awesome! Warps? Cool!
2. If there were some possible way that 2-player simultaneous and/or alternating were included in this game, then it would be even better.
3. I wish that Lootin' Larry were always in the middle of the screen, rather than the screen only scrolling when he gets 'close to the edge.
Title: Re: The "I've got my PYRAMID PLUNDER" Thread

You can change the scrolling.
You just have to find the cheat code first.

Ummmm. I remember trying for 2 player alternating (simultaneous causes other, major problems), but iirc we were already pushing the memory limit on the ram page. Maybe next time :(
Quote
....wish that Lootin' Larry were always in the middle of the screen,
Then how do you handle the situation where you need to move him right, but the screen can't scroll anymore? There was a discussion about that already, and the scroll borders seem okay to about half the people who chimed in. It does pay to check the radar map when you're close to the edge, though :)
Quote
You just have to find the cheat code first.
Yes, the debug menu is still in there. You can change some of the game parameters, including the scroll area. Just be aware: Cheating turns off the high-score save. And the free guy code is considered cheating, too :)
Quote
The game seems too easy on 'Easy' mode and too difficult on 'Suicide' mode, so that's good I suppose.
<LOL> I can just barely beat it on Easy, starting with about 30 guys. (Yes, I suck at it). It's really there for people who just have to see the end-credits. My high score on Suicide is about 700 pts. And I can't finish level 1 on Hard, either...

Pyramide Plunder is a really good Pac-Man like. Usually I don't really love this type of game (except of Revival Chase of course, and all Lock'n chase clones) but here, the fact that you can speed the character and other good ideas (changing bonus item, etc.) put the game at a higher level. Perhaps some levels are too big and the radar is not very useful in the action. Realization is really good (really like tha animation and the graphics of ennemies).

Ya might wanna hit up google maps and try and find a local place that sells shipping supplies (not a UPS Store or USPS or Fedex/Kinkos). They usually have cheap poster tubes that you can cut down with a hacksaw or jigsaw, that'll qualify for first class international.
They might be called something like Boxes & More, or Moving Supplies, or Half Priced Boxes of "Insert town name here".

Question for you about Insanity, I have never played it before. The title screen seems to linger for quite a while. Is that normal, or is my CD-ROM starting to die? I'm using a TG-CD unit with SS 3.0 (USA) card.

Dang that sucks about the jewel case. It's so hit or miss with that crap.
How long does Insanity linger for? It shouldn't be too long of a wait.

I'm kind of disappointed, people don't seem to understand the awesomeness of it being 100% chiptunes.
100% chiptunes - I love this even more now. To be honest at first I hated the music, now I am humming it all day long. Idk how you you got it to sound like that, but it's freaking amazing.

not only the instrument sounds the egyptian sound, just feels like something outside of the normal PCE range. Maybe becuase no other game is similar? I t just fits the game so well. maybe not amazing just really good? fitting? ummmm... idk what i'm going for here, but I like it.

Yeah. It was a frustrating experience to get Egyptian sounding music, since it's out of my normal range of 80s dance music sounding stuff. I'm happy with how the instruments and echo turned out.
Wait til you hear the end-game music. It's not Egyptian at all, lol.

Okay, I didn't record it. Some slacker forgot to charge the battery in the camera.
I did time it. I started the clock as soon as the AETHERBYTE logo came up on the screen. It's stays there for 19 seconds before fading out. If I compare it with Pyramid Plunder the logo disappears much more quickly.
I put PP (you said P-P  ) in tonight and played it. What an awesomely fun game. I love the boost feature. Makes getting that one block you missed so much easier. Made it up to 3-1 (I think). Only saw one cut-screen so far, but it was awesome! Anyway, the next thing I know I've blow 2 hours of my life. My score was approximately 68,000+/- so I have a long way to go!
Thank you! Just thinking about playing it is making me smile. :D

Glad to hear you liked it. (And yes, PP is what we called it during development). If you like the run feature, try playing with the power-ups :)
I think Insanity has to run through the wave effect at least once before it starts. You might be able to press a button or run to skip it, though. Been too long, I don't remember all the details.....
(fwiw: the long load times seem to be connected to an interrupt problem in homebrew games. It seems you can't have an active VSync interrupt going while loading an overlay from CD. Makes sense, sorta. Though reading data from a CD doesn't seem to pose the same problem.)

That seems a little bit slow, actually. 19 seconds is a long time. It only takes ~8 for me.

I've got my PYRAMID PLUNDER! :D
I recorded over a half hour of dvd quality video from an s-video modified Duo R:
This is the most fun I've had playing a new game in a long time. :)
The improvements over Pac Man, large stage design and variety have combined into something great in its own right. It really holds its own up against commercial releases from bitd.

I'll charge up the battery in my camera and record it. I'm not in any rush to do this though. :)
You can't skip it by pressing RUN.

I tweeted that video to all 3 followers of Aetherbyte. It felt good.
Thanks for that video, Black Tiger. I prefer having fan-videos instead of me doing it. It feels more authentic/useful if it's a player showing the game for more than 10 minutes, :)

Black Tiger: Glad you enjoyed it. It gets better once you learn what the power-ups do :)
Some tips: 1) Don't chase the guys down. Try to head them off. They won't turn in straightaways, and it's usually quicker to have them run to you. 2) Use the pause after you grab the ankh. The guys freeze, and are easier to grab. 3) Press select to swap power-ups. You never got to see the other ones :( ( I know you got something other than pause when you grabbed that blue flower)
Glad to see someone actually playing it on normal.

Most people do. My favorite combo is to pause the ghosts, then toggle to the invincible. When the ghosts start moving, hit the power-up and run right through them. Really useful when you are trapped on the higher levels :)

Are the Pac Man-esque levels still in the game or were they completely removed for copyright reasons?

As a Revival Chase customer, I got an email today from Good Deal Games telling me that the TG16 game Pyramid Plunder is now in stock. I already have a copy, but seeing all of the indy TG16 releases in one spot in a beautiful sight: http://www.gooddealgames.com/inventory/Turbografx.html

Well, hopefully they mark it down since you can buy it from Aetherbyte for 35 + shipping. Maybe they thought the game is 40$?
