Title: Modding my original Game Boy
Post by: PunkicCyborg on March 20, 2013, 08:24:06 AM
I've had this clear Play It Loud Game Boy for a while. I mainly play Dr Mario on it but it's such a pain to play it with no back light. So I bought some stuff to make it more usable and thought I'd post picks of my progress.

Here's the system. It's in pretty good shape and plays great but the scratch on the screen sucks so I got a replacement screen.

I made a mistake and bought NES style buttons but I guess they fit for original Game Boy. I'll try them out but might get some different colored buttons. I wish I could find translucent hot pink.

hopefully I don't mess anything up and make an ass out of myself in this thread  :D

Got it all apart now. The case screws are these funky 3 point screws but a small tip flathead fits in there fine. Removing the pcb from the case was kind of weird. You have to carefully pry it up since there's these plastic pegs that hold it all together. Took a little bit of to get it up safely.

ok i made my first mistake. There's two layers you have to remove from the back of the LCD, a polarized plastic layer and a metal film. I didn't realize they had to come off together now I'm left with this mess :(

Ok got this baby finished. I finally got the metal film off the back but sadly the picture has become a little compromised. I can live with the results though but if I ever find a super ugly game boy I might swap the screen. Now I know what to do it's not too hard.
Couldn't get very good pics tonight since it's pretty dark in here and my phone doesn't take good low light pics up close but here's the end result

NICELY DONE!!!

Makes me want to upgrade the screen on my SP. The poor GBA screen couldn't really show off how awesome some of its games look. Mind you,way better than the OG GBA with the crappy non back-lit screen.

In any event, GO PUNKI!
