Title: Poll- Are you a new or old PC Engine/TurboGrafx gamer?
Post by: Otaking on April 07, 2013, 07:37:57 AM
I'd be interested in how many forum members first played the PC Engine/TurboGrafx after the era it was released.
 :D

Personally I played it around the time it was released and through the console's life cycle and I bought most of the games (all the big ones) back when they were first released too.
A massive part of my interest in the system is purley nostalgia of this time.

TG-16 at launch (well, technically, after my brothers and I had saved enough money we bought it the day after Xmas 1989, yes, we asked everyone for $$$ that Xmas).

I forgot about TG-CD. I got that 6 months-year after it was released. My brothers and I bought the deeply discounted demo unit from a local video game store ("Video Dynasty" in Belleville...across from Kmart, for the northern-NJ folks here)

I played it when I was about 4, which was in 1992.  That's close enough.  It was still a current system at the time. :)

I didn't get my own until I was 12.  But, it was the same one that I grew up playing.     It's awesome when your aunts and uncles get too old and busy to play games.

I played later like 2000 but always wanted a tg16 when it first came out. Instead I got a SMS for Xmas and the Genny and the tg16 were released and I always thought the tg16 looked way better. I wished for it and saved clippings of the systems and the games ((nerd pose))

Same story almost as Arkhan I played when I was 3 in 1990 when my dad brought it home from a newspaper. $80 bucks with some games. Bonks Adventure, Bonks Revenge, legendary axe, Splatterhouse. Boxy Boy, ect.  In fact for the longest time I though all games were this good for the system. :).  Although we had deep blue and got tricky kick (the only game I ever bought new for the system with my Dad).  I didn't have my "own" console until 2012 when I joined up here, but I played on that deck my dad got the whole time (and I still do!).

I (wisely) decided to hold off on buying a console until after I was done with college and happily employed (well, getting paid, maybe not happy about having to work).

So in 1990, after moving from Seattle to Alabama (yeah) I was scoping the current systems: SNES, Genny, TG-16.  I really like the TG-16 and the stuff that they were doing with the PCE in Japan, so I jumped on board at that point.

Bought my first TG-16 off a guy that won it in a contest. He had got the base, booster+, stick, tap and 5 games and sold it to me for $150 IIRC. Picked up the CD-ROM when the promo with the demo CD+G was released for $300.

I first played the Turbo at a friend's house. His older brother had one and I remember thinking how cool and different it was. Then his brother moved away and I didn't see one again for years and didn't even think about it really. I bought my system after discovering Chris Bucci's Turbo Views and marathoning all the episodes hed'd done up to that point (This was right after the second dvd had come out and I bought both volumes). I've been a fan ever since.

I picked up a TurboDuo shortly after launch.  Prior to that I lusted after Turbobs in stores and had to make due with playing whatever was being demoed.

I got my Duo in the summer of '94 when I was 15.  I realize that this was after the 'prime' of the Turbo's life cycle, but I had a blast picking up clearanced games from gamer/video rental shops in the area and waiting patiently for TZD to release titles like Beyond Shadowgate and Bonk 3 CD.  :)  Also, kept up with new released imports during that time.

The SNES started to collect dust.  :D

Still one of favorite systems.  Right up there with neo geo.  :)

I arrived extremely late to the party. I played the TG16 just once at a friend's house circa 1992, so it was largely a system I only read about in EGM. Nearly 20 long years passed before I finally picked up a TG16 in 2011. That brought me here and now I'm finally able to enjoy a system that I could only dream of as a kid.

I got my first TurboGrafx 16 the same year Neutopia came out; 1989 iirc.
I think that was also the same year that the TG16 was released in the USA.
I was about 13, and had to mow an insane # of lawns to earn the moneys.

I got the CD Add-on a year or so later, for Ys Book I & II.
Once again, more lawn mowing ensued, but this time my siblings helped; we pooled our moneys.
We've been sharing games and systems ever since.  8)

Edited to add:
That reminds me!
My little sister beat Neutopia II while I watched, because it came out shortly after I sprained my wrist.
I had fallen out of a tree in someone's yard, that wanted their tree trimmed.  #-o
But still, it was a cool experience.
My sis had lots of Zelda experience, and had already beaten Neutopia I, using my maps of the overworld and dungeons.
Neutopia II was a great treat for us both; the world was so massive, compared to N1, and she also got the opportunity to map it by hand.

Good times, good times...

Got my TG16 in 1989, which is all I wanted for xmas that year. Screw that Genesis nonsense, I KNEW the Turbo was THE system

My parents skrimped and saved and I got a TG-CD the next xmas, which was one of the best xmas mornings ever. I never owned any of the other systems of that time because to me they were all inferior, and why waste the money?

Heh, one of my favorite things in going through my old games is finding the maps I made on graph paper along with notes I'd written.

I'm new to the Turbo/PCE land, I got my Duo-RX in an ebay bundle from a cool guy in Wisconsin maybe around 2009.  The main drive was actually just so I could play the Working Designs games I'd collected for the Turbo :D

We picked up a TG-16 around Christmas time in 91. We had it for a couple years before the video started to fail. I eventually took it outside and stomped the shit out it out of anger. Thinking back, I regretted doing that as the booster with have solved my problem. I still remember where we picked up some of the games. I bought Aero Blasters and Andre Panza Kickboxing from toys'r us. Bought splatter house, china warrior, legendary axe and both bonk's from a guy in our neighborhood for $10 each. Sinistron, r-type and space harrier from the flea market. Ninja spirit, dungeon explorer, turbo tab and a couple of turbo pads from a classmate. And finally Super Star Soldier from a pawn shop. We also got the VHS promo for lords of thunder. We watched the hell out of it.

Got my TG-16 when it was on sale at Toys R Us for $99 on x-mas of '91. It was with Keith's Courage pack-in and Final Lap Twin ($20). I asked for a SNES and my mom went the cheap route when visiting my grandmother in CA. I lived on the Navy base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico at the time and the NEX was the only place to get games, which did not sell TG-16 stuff at all. At the time there was nowhere to buy games until they opened a EB store off base around mid '92 in Fajardo. I ended getting Cadash from there and then never got a game for it after, until I bought my own Turbo Duo new from TZD in 2000 with Ys 1+2 and Final Zone 2. I already found the 4 in 1 disc in CD bargain bin for $2 in '99 (get this) at a place called 'Hudson's Treasure Hunt' discount outlet... Success.

So, my experience was rather limited through the 90's with it with my 3 games. By the time I moved back to the states in late '93 the market for TG-16 was pronounced dead and got me a SNES in the spring. Hell, we only had a Wal-Mart and K-Mart anyway. They never sold TG-16 stuff there to begin with. I asked some friends of mine that lived here in MS and they never have seen any of it. We didn't even get a real game store until '96 in my town, lol.

Well, as I live in Switzerland, I remember as a kid (around 1988 or so) walking around in Zurich and seeing that cute little white PC-Engine sitting there in the display window... R-Type / Galaga was playin... I was starin' at it and suddenly realising what it was and how much better than the NES it looked... got it same day :) and bought every system and probably almost every game I could get ...

heard of it before from a friend which had it, but I didn't get a chance to see his system yet, so I got it a few days after he did. Same week it was featured in a german video game magazine "VIDEOGAMES" that I always bought here and it was introduced to the reader as brandnew from japan :)

best experience of all the systems out there... only Mega Drive and Super Famicom/Famicom came close. Love.

I first got my own personal Turbo set up back in 2001, but my playing experience with Turbo goes back at least another 10 years prior, back in '91. I remember one of my close buddies back in grade school got one and I had a NES and often we would trade back and forth and borrow eachother's systems often, usually for a week or two at a time, every couple of months or so. I also have very vivid memories of playing games like Bonk's Adventure and Legendary Axe on a store TG-16 kiosk display back in very early nineties at Fred Myer's and Best. Also remember playing Devil's Crush at a store called Incredible Universe back in the day, on there store display unit. I will never forget my own personal purchase though of my very own Turbo, best $100 big package deal I ever bought(well 1 of many at least).

I first played the TG16 In 91 when I was 11 years old. An older cousin of mine that had come from Mexico to live with me and my parents purchased it at Toys R Us when it was on clearance for $99.99 I believe. Anyways I got to enjoy the Tg16 for about 7 months or so then it was time for my cousin to head back to Mexico and there went the TG16 that was in my family's house. Then when was 19 in 99" a friend of mine gave me his older brothers TG16 because at the time I was all about collecting for the Sega Dreamcast and he felt I would give it a good home which I did. I played it on and off for the next 3 years buying games for it through TZD then move out on my own and stored it away somewhere safe until recently in the past 7 months. Now I own a fairly decent collection of TG16 and PC Engine goodies thanks to a lot of you dudes from here. I'm gonna have to say I learned about it back in the day but really got into it in the present .. lol in between new school and old school PC Engine/TurboGrafx gamer ...

Bought my Sega Genesis at launch then fell in love with the TG-16 when I played it at Montgomery Wards. Word got around school that I had a Genesis and a friends brother had just bought him a TG-16 and he didn't like it. We made an immediate trade. And yes I took a lot of heat from a lot of kids for making the trade. I didn't care. Got a CD set up for Christmas when it was dropped down to $149.99 from Toys R Us. Then around 95 got a flyer for a trade up offer from TZD to send in my TG16 w CD set up and some cash for a new DUO.

If the TG16 was relatively obscure in the US, (save for a few ads) it was pretty much non existant in Mexico. Your cousin must have had it rough to collect.

Extremely late to the party - didn't know a single soul who had a TG-16 when I was growing up (this coming from someone who had a Sega Master System and managed to find 2 other kids in his neighborhood who also had SMS's), and EB Games / Babbages never had them on display. Christ, I didn't even play one until MGC 2011. Bought a SuperGrafx at that show and the rest is history.

I knew all about Turbo from reading magazines, of course. I do remember my local Toys r' Us and EB Games selling the boxed Turbo Duo + bonus pack on clearance for about $29.99 during the end of its lifespan, along with a slew of games like Vasteel, Exile: WP, etc in the bargain bin for $5. Hindsight...blah blah blah

He did actually. Their were absolutely no games to buy in Mexico for it. He came back for another stay late in 92 to work for my fathers Construction business and purchased a TG16 CD and a bunch of Hu card games that were on clearance. The shitty part about all of this is that he only bought the CD unit so that he could listen to English speaking music cd's like Metallica, Pantera and some punk rock music that I influenced him to listen to. What a freaking tease that was to have a kick ass TG16 CD unit a bunch of sealed games and no TG16 to play them on. He didn't even buy 1 single CD game before we went back to Mexico a year later. I would imagine that's why now at the age of 33 I'm so into collecting and playing the TG16. But I can honestly say it's because of my cousin Frank that I became so interested in electronics and gaming at such an early age. I come from a very traditional old school Mexican family and I was not raised with computers or gaming being a part of the home life. Now I'm the go to guy in my giant family when it comes to their gaming and electronic needs.

I'm still a relative newbie. I have fewer than 10 years of experience under my belt. Much less yet if you want to talk specifically the US stuff, since I started and stuck with the PC Engine for a good long while. Back when the TG-16 was current, I was all about the NES and SNES. I don't think I even knew it existed. But I became a retro game collector in '99 or so and an importer of Japanese games not long after, so it was only a matter of time before the PC Engine and TG-16 (and the PC-FX) beckoned to me. :)

Bought the base system for around 155.00 cash from a AKO enterprises wholesale in Bolingbrook IL when it first came out.  These guys used to host video game swap meets at a hotel once a month and sent out post cards to everyone letting them know when the next meet up was.  This was just before the height of the 8-bit Nintendo popularity when Tetris was released.  Me and a few friends would always hit up the AKO game swapmeet int eh morning and then head to the Mars Merchandise (another now defunct video game shop) game swapmeet in the afternoon.

Not to get too far of track, but I remember being very dissapointed with Keith Courage as soon as I powered on the system.  The first part of the stage where you don't have the power suit on sucked.  My sister was laughing at me saying.... "you spent over 150.00 for THAT?!?!"  The game got much better when we you got the suit and went into the underworld area....or whatever it is called.  I have not bothered to power up this game in nearly 20 years so I'm going off memory.

The first game I bought was Bonk.  Nearly beat it that afternoon.  I remember it was going to be a toss up between buying Bonk and Military Maddness.  My dad grew up playing Avalon Hill board games and wanted me to get MM, but I ended up getting Bonk...he was disappointed.  I ended up buying MM the following month with my lawn mowing money.

I never had a TG-16 growing up, nor even played one. My only experience with it back then was seeing Bonk at a Toys R Us kiosk and wanting it badly. I remember some store employee back then saying that "these work in a Nintendo too". I was 6 years old, I believed it, I begged my grandma for it, and was shocked to pop that box open to find a tiny game card that could never possibly work. Why did that was that guy at the store thinking??

Last year I got a box of mixed video game stuff at an auction in LA. A Turbo Duo was in there, and I remembered that day of wanting to play Bonk so badly, so I kept it and tracked down a small set of games. It's a fun side of my favorite era in gaming that I never got to experience before.

I knew about the TG-16 when I was very young in the early 90s; my dad subscribed to Game Players magazine back then and I found out about it and other stuff like the TG-CD and TurboExpress from there. I remember really wanting an SNES and Genesis back then because of it and I think I wanted a TG-16 too. AFAIK, TG-16 stuff wasn't really available in my area then because I don't remember seeing TG-16 stuff in the stores.

Anyway, I got my first TG-16 about 6 years ago and I've been hooked ever since. I got into both the PCE and TG-CD/PCE CD scenes after I sold my first TG-16 to get a region modded PCE Duo (which I stupidly traded for a TG-CD setup, which I've since replaced with a Duo-R).

Got my Duo back in early 94 from Game Dude after reading the review of YS books 1 & 2 in EGM. Yeah it was a bit late in its life, but I tell you what, we had endless amounts of fun playing 5 player bomberman as I was the only person in my little town that had a Duo!

Old timer here.

First saw the Turbo at the Montgomery Wards when I was scoping out the Genesis.

It wasn't until I saw the PC Engine write up in EGM #4 (which explained the orgins of the Turbo) that I first became curious about the card-based system.

When I saw the Turbo initially, I didn't know anything about it, who NEC was, or why it was coming out of nowhere to compete with Sega. That article cleared things up, made the connection to the wildly successful Japanese PC Engine, and the Turbo suddenly seemed like it had the weight to take on Sega and win. We all know how that turned out...

After collecting Christmas and birthday money and combining it with allowance and mowing/car washing income, I was able to pick up a CD unit. Again, EGM played a big role in convincing me to buy the CD attachment, with it's raving review of Ys. Ed, one reviewer giving it a 10 and declaring that the perfect game had finally been made...

After years of lusting over a Turbo Express for 10 years, I finally picked up one from eBay in 2000.

I got back into the Turbo in 2009 and have been collecting steadily since, really focusing on the PC Engine, Super Grafx and Super System Card games.

What if I am not the super oldtimer, but also not new to the system?

I know and adore the PCE since her first appearance in a German video game mag back in early 88. But due to being only 13 at that time and having no income whatsoever, approx. 600 swiss francs for an import PCE was waaaay out of my range at that time.

I first played the PCE at a buddys home around 1989. he was an only-child, his parents were out of house a lot, and he could get anything he wanted.

since there was never any official release of the pce in europe (switzerland), we always had to rely on expensive importers.
arround 1992 I got my first own 2nd handed core with few cards, like pc genjin and super star soldier.

later I got an imported US turbo duo with RGB mod and huey adaptor, which was my prime system until 2005.

around end of the 90s I also got some brief case, SGFX, LT and stuff. also when I finally got my very own income.

Now I am using my S-Video modded DUO-R, since RGB is such a rare ware here in Japan.

OLD TIMER                                                                                                                                                                 I was a super lucky kid in the summer of 89 at the young age of 13. My best friends mom worked in the marketing dept. (i don't know who for) in the computer/video game industry and somehow she acquired a Turbografx about a week before public sale. I remember going over to my buddies house to spend the night and play games and watch movies when his mom walked thru the door holding the Turbo. We had only seen a couple of articles about the Turbo in some videogame magazines. We completely lost our shit. Even though we only had Kieth Courage we didn't stop playing all weekend. It is one of my best gaming memories. I ended up getting my turbo for Xmas 4 months later. I played turbo for years.I never got the turbo cd attachment but I did pick up a turboexpress thru a trade with a buddy in high school in 94.  When I turned 20 I sold all my video games and systems thinking about the future and using the money toward moving out of my parents house. After a couple years of regreting selling my stuff I found a web site selling NIB TurboGrafx and NIB Turbo Express. I pretty sure it was in the year 2000. Turbografx were about $50 and the Express about $60. I purchased one of each, I should have bought all I could but I didn't ever think the Turbografx prices would climb so high. I picked up a Pc Engine Duo in 2010 because I wanted to play turbo cd games I had and start collecting Japanese hucard games. Last year I pulled the trigger on the Supergrafx, cool system. I only need 1941 to complete Supergrafx collection and Darius Alpha since it upgrades the graphics. But those games are very expinsive. Thanks for reading. Cheers!!!

Old timer (In both senses)

Took my nephew to We-Be-Toyz to pick up a nintendo for XMas. (nes. He was pissed they didn't have the one with the robot anymore.) And a few games.

Just got a nice-paying job at the time, so I asked my finance manager (aka, his mom) If I could get me something. Walked out with a tg-16, cd-rom, and all the games they had at the time. (It was only about a half-dozen)

Only seen it on magazines when it was new or youtube vids ages later.
The system didn't exist over here and neither saw any shop getting one as an import device. A pity and I really regret not to have got it earler.

Added cd in 1992 and enjoyed most of the US super cd and Dracula X.

Sold it like a fool and this year got a pc engine duo and a turbo express.  Reliving the teen years and learning a lot from the community.

I got my turbo when it was first launched. Once I saw the turbo on the cover of VGCE, I knew I had to get it.

I first fell in love when this issue of VGCE came out as well. I can still see the cover in my mine. I marveled at how they could put something which pummeled the NES into the tiny HuCard. I had to wait a little while, but it was before NEC packaged Bonk with the system. A friend bought one shortly after I purchased mine. His came with Bonk's Adventure and he thought Keith Courage was so awful. He loved joking me about how I only got KC with mine. God I still love Keith. I'm going to go play it as soon as I hit post!

Woah woah, your grandfather had TV Sports Baseball??  I'll assume you either mean World Class Baseball or perhaps TV Sports Basketball.  Otherwise, you need to track that game down, as it was finished, but never released!  That'd be a great find, but I don't have high hopes.

Not an old timer by any means. I saw pictures of the PC Engine for the first time in 1999, in a German videogame magazine called "TOTAL!". It was featured along with the SuperGrafx in an article about the history of videogames.

I got my Turbo Duo in 2013.

TBH, I didn't even know what it was until about 2007.
That was the year I bought a Wii, and I saw something called "TurboGrafx-16/TurboGrafx-CD" in the list of Wii Virtual Console games.

As I say, I hadn't a clue what that was. So out of curiosity I bought a couple of those games, and really liked what I saw. So the following year I got on to eBay and won an auction off of this guy called Doujindance. It was for a loose Coregrafx and PC Engine Duo.

The Duo was running very hot with the Genesis 2 power supply that I was given. That's what led me to you guys here at pcenginefx to ask with regard to power supply specs.

I bought the system new for $50 when its battle with the Genesis was all but lost and was able to get a lot of used games for $5 a pop from my local video rental shop at the same time since they were cutting ties as well.  I played it a little bit back then, mostly just quick run throughs of Fantasy Zone and Deep Blue, but didn't really have enough games for me to really stick with the system long.  I always wanted to play the Bonk games but could never find them in my area in Northern Canada.  The Genesis and SNES kept releasing good games up there so it was back to playing those.  I always kept the system and all the games, and every few years I'd revisit them, but it wasn't until earlier this year that I really fell in love with the system.  I busted it out for a quick play on my birthday and ended up plowing through a half dozen of the games with a craving for more.  Fast forward a few months and I've been able to track down the vast majority of the HuCard games and I'm working on the CDs now as well.  Great little system that never really got a fair shot, and the one that finally, after 25+ years of gaming finally made me a shooter fan.  All hail NEC.

I'm definitely a late comer to OBEY. I only knew TG-16 from magazine coverage when it was current. I only knew one kid (friend of a friend of a friend) who was that spoiled kid who had everything, and he had a TG-16 and the Turbo CD, but I never got to play it (I was the young kid who just got to watch, prefiguring Twitch).

In the late 90s, I discovered the magic of emulation, and the Magic Engine emulator, which was my firs taste of OBEY. I was a mostly emu-classic gamer for many years when I finally started "collecting" in 2006, when I bought a like-new TG-16 and three games (Keith Courage, Dungeon Explorer, and Neutopia).

For several years after that, I still played most games through emulation when I picked up buying a few games here and there for TG-16, and was pointed at Keith Courage here for a great Duo-R with region switch. I've slowly accumulated a nice little library that I am very happy with.

I knew a kid who had a Turbo Express but NOT a TG-16 in the 90s. Man did I do a lot of over the shoulder watching.

"Can I play now?"
"No."

Then I emulated it for a few years in the early aughts before ever owning one. More accurately, I hogged the hell out of my buddies' roommates PC which had an emulator on it, since I had no idea how to set that stuff up.

I had a TG16 then the next Xmas got a CD add on. Got the super system card at release. My brother at the time worked at NEC in Texas, so my parents bought me the TG16 based on him working there. He would send me games every once in a while which was awesome. My favorite on he sent was Devil's Crush. Made the super huge mistake of selling everything in HS to get a Saturn. I bought a Duo though in college and have been slowly getting the games I really enjoyed back. My fondest gaming memories are playing my TG16+CD growing up. I didnt get SNES until the end of its generation. My first new system at release after TG16 was the PSX.

Traded in my TG-16 back in the day to get the Duo at launch.  Glad I did.  Sad it didn't last long, but at least I was grabbing the games for next to nothing.  Cotton and DE II $10 a piece new?...yes please.

I had Cotton at one point and don't miss it one bit, traded it back when it was going for regular prices.  I think for something pretty common, too.  You're the second person I've heard picked up DEII for $10 though, and I wish I would have run into it at that price.  Gah, what was I doing back in 1993/94???  I guess you never can tell which games are going to become rare.  It was probably still $50 bucks which was still a hefty amount to me back in high school.

I've been retrogaming since 2002, starting with NES. I didn't know what Turbografx was until the Wii came out. I literally read the Virtual Console announcement and was like wth is a Turbografx? I downloaded a few games and got hooked. Starting in 2011 with the Genesis, and 2012 Atari 2600, I started branching out beyond Nintendo systems (I have every Nintendo system except for Virtual Boy). 2013 brought me an AV Famicom so I could rid myself of using half-donkey converters to play imports on my NES toaster, and 2014 introduced me to three "underdogs," an SMS via an adapter from Stone Age Gamer, an Atari 7800, and a Turbo Grafx-16 base model. One of my first purchases was the Everdrive, seeing how expensive TG-16 games were. I also recently bought an AV adapter from a dealer on Etsy. Very nice to finally get stereo sound output.

Late Bloomer but I have a modest pile of Turbochip games and am building my collection slowly. I joined mainly to read the "hidden" forums but I figure I'll post a few here.

tg-16 is a wonderful if often overlooked system!

This is a true story. I remember going to Video Game Exchange if people remember those, looking for Bonks Revenge and other games. I remember seeing this stupid game with a witch on it thinking it was some game for a girl and quickly passing on it.

I'd seen the original US commercials on television, and this was at a time when I had income and was looking to purchase my very own console (had previously had a 5200 handed-down from my older brother)

A new strip-mall had opened nearby and it strangely (next to a grocery store and a Chuck E Cheese) had a "Wall to Wall Sound and Video" store, I think it may have been just called "The Wall" at that time.
I rode my bike up there one day to do some comparative shopping. The audio video store had demo displays of both the Genesis and TuboGrafx-16. A VHS tape reel had me excited for Blazing Lazers, but the playable demo unit featured Keith Courage. Sorry guys! I ended up buying a Genesis.

Luckily (and unexpectedly) within the following year an older kid in the neighborhood I never really hung out with suggested we temporarily trade consoles. Dungeon Explorer and Devils Crush were played for many hours, and I got to complete Dungeon Explorer with a friend.

It wasn't until around 2004 that I purchased a PC-Engine GT, and then a PC-Engine weeks apart from each other, and then soon after a Duo-R and things snowballed from there!
I remember how stunned I was at how small the PC-Engine was. And also how odd I felt that Galaga'88 was my favorite game even among some big name titles.

I didn't get to play turbo until psone era. I only knew about Nintendo and Sega when it came out.

When I was deep into Super Nintendo, a friend of mine from school invited me over to his house.  He was playing Exile on a TurboGrafx CD.  It was the first time I had ever heard actual voices being spoken in a video game.  From that moment, I was hooked.  Later that same year, the TurboDuo launched, and I got one.  Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder were my jam.

I remember hating how small the CD library was, and being a broke highschool student, I couldn't afford to buy but one game a month if I was lucky.  To this day I still get pissed that I spent money on a game called Shape Shifter.  Damn I hated that game.

When I joined the military right out of highschool, I got rid of all of my old games/systems.  I still kick myself for that.  I've been into emulators for the last few years, but I only recently picked up a Duo R to play on original hardware again...

I picked my TG and CD addon respectively as they were released at Toys-R-Us.  I remember thinking a CD based game was the coolest damn thing.  After I got my drivers license I removed the CD player, picked up a tape deck adapter and it rode with me all the time 8) I'm amazed I never broke it. Over time it got pushed aside by new stuff until recently.  The only issue I had was the usual stuck laser gear, but now all is good

There were voice samples all over SNES games. I guess you mean longer recorded narration and dialog.

Or better quotes than Jago's "endokuken" that comes out as "Hey you puken?" or "electrocution!"

I was eager to get my TG16 at launch. Picked it up from Radio Shack (in Canada) with two additional launch titles.  Loved that system, talked two other buddies into getting one .. and my local video rental store into carrying games for rental (not sure that worked out well for them).  But then like most other consoles it eventually got sold at a yard sale. Assuming I was raising funds to build a gaming PC.  Anyway reacquired a TG16 just after graduating college (so 16 years ago).  It was only in the last 3 years that I started collecting heavily and grabbed a SuperGrafx, PC Engine Duo-R, PCE GT, and Turbo Express. So my jump into PC Engine games is fairly recent.

Got mine at a local Toys-R-Us back then. Had the Keith Courage pack-in and I purchased Bonk Adventures. Can't remember, not sure what shooters I grabbed, I just know I fell in love. Raiden, Deadmoon, Galaga 90, Aero Blasters, I think those were my first. And when the time came that I desired the CD add on, I ordered it out of the back of a video game magazine, no internet back then. The store was sold out of the CD add on, so they sent me the Turbo Duo as a replacement, $150. Going price was $299 back then.

First of this year I finally picked up a PC Engine. Fell in love again.

I didn't get a PC Engine until 2009 after I discovered Ys I&II.  I later sold it before I left Japan in December of 2013, and didn't get a new Duo-R until mid-2014.  Now I'm steadily building my collection back up and repurchasing some of the games I had before I left.  Most frustrating is that I found the Cosmic Fantasy and Valis Visual Collections at a local shop in Tochigi for what amounted to about $3, but I had to sell them off because of my sudden return to the US, along with several other things I regret parting with.

That wasn't the first time I'd encountered the technology, though.  When I was around nine or ten years old there was a demo unit at a Radio Shack or some other place in a local mall.  It was running Sherlock Holmes, which I messed with for a minute before my small, child-sized brain determined that it sucked.  I wish they had actually put something decent in it, as I might have actually started looking into it more.  I did briefly try to get a rip of Dracula X I found online to work after I learned about it, but I couldn't get it to work for whatever reason and gave up without knowing anything about the other titles on the system.  Of course, it didn't help that the only gaming mags I ever read were Nintendo Power and PSM (Anyone remember Howard & NESter and Banzai Chibi-chan?).

I saw the PC Engine at retro stores the first time when I was in Japan as an exchange student back in 2003.  It was at a retro store around Akihabara and I remember playing Youkai Dochuuki and being disinterested yet again.  I was more interested in anime on laserdisc and the Sega Saturn / Dreamcast libraries at the time.

My first system was an Atari 2600, and then I got an NES not too much later.  I've held onto my original NES all these years, actually. I even kept the old box and all the packaging materials, so you can tell it was definitely my first love when it came to gaming.  That said, I still remember my first reaction to playing Ys I&II when I finally got the chance.  It was something like, "Why the hell was I playing NES when I could have been playing THIS!" XD

My brother and I got a TG16 in 91 from money we made putting on a haunted house with expectations to get Splatterhouse (we loved Halloween).  That Christmas we got the CD with fighting street and sherlockholmes.  We only got 2 other cd's after that.  We wound up using the cd player as a standalone through college.  Senior year our roomate from Oregon also had a Turbo and we played alot.  CD gear eventually gave out in 98 until this forum helped me fix it last year!  I've picked up a few more titles and recently Blazing Lazers.  The TG16 is a great console.

Got TG-16 as Christmas gift when I saw the demo and wanted it.  Got the CD system a few years later when Toys R Us was blowing them out on sale.  Still have the original CD system BTW.

I'm very new to the system, only got one in the last six months, tho it's been on my radar for a while as I'm a bit of a shoot 'em up fan.

Overall I think it's a cracking system, my only real criticism of it is the music on some games can be a bit lacking in bass.

I just need to invest in either a CD attachment or a Duo so I can play some of the other awesome looking shooters and that Dracula game everyone bangs on about. :D

Alex. :)

I am a newer gamer. I didn't even know that the TurboGrafx existed back when it was first released. I guess word of it never trickled down to my little corner of South Carolina. (same goes for the Master System). It wasn't until college in the early 2000s I spoke to someone about import games and they mentioned the PC Engine. That peaked my curiosity and read it to it and discovered the TurboGrafx. I looked for one for quite a while, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I managed to pick up a console. I had a NES, SNES, and played some Genesis stuff but after learning about the TG16, I knew I had to try one out one day.
For a long time I had built up a large collection of NES games but I got burnt out on the system and the way prices have shot up. I know that TurboGrafx stuff is far from cheap these days, but the console's game library interests me way more than say the SNES or Genesis. Besides, if I'm going to have to pay a lot for a game, I'd rather it be something enjoyable like Jackie Chan, New Adventure Island, and Neutopia II instead of Color a Dinosaur, TMNT: Tournament Fighters, or Waynes World.
After a while, I did manage to pick up a console about four years ago and fell in love with it. I dreamed over a CD system but never managed to pick one up. Foolishly, I sold my collection off last year. A decision I have SEVERELY regretted ever since. Since then, I have picked up a Doujindance modded PC Engine Duo-R and have enjoyed rediscovering games I had previously owned, but experiencing for the first time some of the CD and import games. :)

I got my turbo grafx 16 in 1991. I asked for a Super Nintendo for Christmas. Well they were sold out everywhere so my father bought me a Turbo. I loved it. It came with 6 free games at the time. I sold it to a friend in 1995 biggest mistake i have made involving video games. My pc engine duo should be here friday. Cant wait.

I discovered the PCE/TG16 in the late 90's via emulator.  SFII and Afterburner got me hooked.  Didn't get my first system(CGII) until 2005.

I first discovered the Turbo Grafx-16 back around 2010 / 2011. That was before the Turbo Everdrive so the high prices turned me away. I just recently decided to take the plunge on a Turbo Everdrive V2.4, hopefully all the bugs have been worked out. I also got a white PCE console and a Duo-R.

I am pretty sure I imported one from a london computer store called Shekana back in 1988 a few months after a UK  mag called CVG made an article about this games machine that was taking japan by storm. I was amazed at this little white square machine the size of a crisp packet that was producing these arcade like graphics especially the R-Type which was doing the business back then.  Prior to this I was very disappointed with the Amiga 500 version and was shocked that a little machine that could do R-Type better than a home computer.

Shekana were one of the first london retailers to stock them in store and the early models came modded in either RGB scart or PAL RF.  I had no idea about these things back then but since I was so used to playing games with RF PAL well that's the version I went with.

At that time one of the main HMV stores in London were also stocking and selling modified imported pc engines and I remember telling my mates at that time about how amazing this console was and that it could do arcade graphics so I asked the store clerk to put on a game that I never had heard of.  It was Deep Blue I think everyone laughed at it when it booted up including the store clerk especially at my comment on the "arcade graphics" and then seeing Deep Blue's.  Ah well.

So I stuck with PAL RF for a while and then soon after I saved up for the Interface unit and CD-rom attachment after falling in love with seeing and HEARING Wonderboy III monster lair.  It wasn't till around the time Ys book I & II was imported that I got it modified into RGB Scart by a small shop called Advance Console Entertainment run by 2 middle eastern guys.  they renting out a small room in one of those swanky Edwardian houses near Regents Park before setting shop in trendy Carnaby Street when I think at that time the Super Famicom was making an appearance.

During that time a shop called Japan Centre which I think first opened up a store near St Paul's Cathederal Area were importing pc engine magazines.  One which I think was pc engine gekkan. I gave the megadrive a miss at that time and instead traded all my pc engine stuff when the SNES appeared.  Months later I traded the SNES in for the Duo R and that kept me busy till when the Sega Saturn appeared with Virtual Fighter 2, Sega Rally and Virtua Cop.

Got back into the pc engine again around 2003.

Shekana rings a few bells as I had bought a white PC Engine around that time too. I bought the CVG mag too.
Ended up buying a secondhand one from a chap and had 20 loose cards. Most were pretty pants but Rtype was in there and has been stuck in the grey mass since. Iv'e floated back a few times had big collections twice.

New gamer here. I first read about the console in '92, when it was mentioned in some magazines. Most of these mentions, since it was not released here at the time, were just little notes telling about "a japanese console that had little cards as cartridges but also uses CD-ROMs to play games". I vividly remember three articles that were more than that, though. One was a Bonk's Adventure review with pictures, in the lines of "watch out, Sonic and Mario, there's a new mascot in the town for this new console", another was a five or six-page long article about the TG-16 with a couple pictures and two dozen little and rough reviews of some games. The third one was a big note about Snatcher, with a picture and descriptions of how japanese gamers would wait for hours in its launch day, that the story was very complex and the "cd-romantic" joke, with a nice picture of the scene of Mika showing JUNKER around to Gillian.

I only read about the console in those times, however. First time I ever saw one of the consoles was a TurboExpress a guy I met at military service had, around year 2000. Some years latter, when I first heard that the original version of Dracula X that I played on SNES was way better than the port, I played it on an emulator and was hooked. Around four years ago, discovered this forum and sometime later bought a modded PCE and IFU-30 on eBay, a CD-ROM² here and in no time I had a new plataform among my all-time favorites
