I just made it to stage 6 on this game and ran out of my last continue.
This game is pretty tight. I recall a few members asking me how did I get off stage 1 in the first place. I'll tell y'all stuff there is to know about the game. I've noticed there is no walkthrough on Gamefaqs so I could be the one to make it happen after I beat the game one day.
Basically you're looking for keys to either advance to the next segment of a stage, or to the boss. The fruit builds up Zenny and points, while the skulls take away Zenny.
To use a special weapon, pause the game and press left/right to select. press I and II simultaneously to use the weapon, it's not like Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden where you hold up and press attack.
Here's what I recall some of the items do.
>Cloud - Allows you to fly during boss battles.
>Glove - allows you to dig through walls. Be wise about how you use it, you can run out.
>Scroll -Gives back magic meter by 5 points
>PoW and the Windmill -we've seen those 2 certain sprites pop up in dozens of other Capcom classics. PoW clears enemies of the screen and the windmill increases your lifeline by several points
>Bag -refills some lifeline after running out the first time
>Magic Lamp - lets you continue after death.

This is a great, original platformer. Been an awful while since I beat the game (once!), my recollections are hazy at best. It is a tough game indeed.

Thing is though, everytime you beat a stage, you seem to remember your mistakes you made the first time you played the stage, then the next time, it's a cakewalk.
In the daily doses gaming thread, I tested out a trick on building Zenny. I built up to at least 20000 in stage 1, particularly for magic lamps and weapon upgrades.

Son Son II is a Son Son themed PC Engine version of the arcade game Black Tiger.
If you like SSII, you should check out BT.
-
^^ I've never heard that before. I might have to track it down again and see about that, I used to have it ages ago but never caught any Black Tiger similarities.
-
I wouldn't compare it to black tiger since because of the rift between projectiles and close up combat.

Its not even a comparison, its a straight port that was customized to Son Son.
They share the same unique jumping/climbing gameplay, long attack weapon, enemies/obstacles(and BT has some unique enemies), level layouts(slopes, dungeons..), powerups/items, Zenny & shops... all anyone has to do is play a couple levels of one and then the other.
I just wish I knew about Son Son II back in the day and always wanted a home version of Black Tiger.
It killed me than in the flyers and/or manuals of early Capcom NES games, they listed Black Tiger as coming soon. For years I was sure that there was a Famicom version out there somewhere.
