For me, I will crush Tony himself in the THPS games (any of them).
Turbo or any other, what game are you simply just great at?
-
I currently hold the high score in Parasol Stars.
-
It's not much to brag about, but I can beat down Hatris at will.

Exactly what i wanted to glean from this thread. Im sure all of us have an odd gaming talent.
-
Splatterhouse on hard mode, Sf 2 Champion Edition, Primal Rage with Blizzard, and a few other games I cant think of right off hand.
-
SF2 with Dhalsim and Zangief, Bayou Billy on NES, Astrosmash on Atari 2600, Ecco the Dolphin on Sega Genesis, Legacy of the Wizard on NES, Berzerk, Defender, Joust, Burgertime
oh, and Strawberry Shortcake Musical Matchup.
I'm most proud of Bayou Billy, because most people f*ck around on that game like a bunch of hillbillies.
-
I had a hard time with legacy of the wizard, so kudos to you if you are good at it. I need to give that one another try. Its been a while
-
Half the challenge of the game is answered in the manual that noone ever reads, lol

Due to hours upon hours of play, I consider myself pretty decent at Bomberman. While all my friends were playing their NESes and whatnot, I sat home playing through single-player mode on Bomberman over and over. Turns out, all that practice paid off as any time I play against somebody these days, I tend to be pretty successful.
Of course, if I ever played against some of the fanatics on this board, I'd probably get creamed. :)
-
I consider myself to be a dr mario pro. im also pretty good at tetris but nowhere near those guys who play grandmaster.
-
I used to rule Gate of Thunder big time. I think I actually finished it once with my original hyper cocoon still green. These days I'm lucky to OCC it. My skills have atrophied...considerably. :(
With Street Fighter Zero 2 (original CPS2 ver) I could shut the f*ck down basically everyone I knew with Nash, and I know some decent players. This is the only fighting game I'm really that good at though, and I'm not really that good at all on the global scale. I love fighting games but I suck at them.
-
I thought I was pretty good at Ridge Racer, until I reached the hard track in RR Revolution, which I can't beat. : <
-
I was really good at Jet Grind Radio, and then I tried it again the other day and severely blow at it.
-
I'm all about Operation C on the Game Boy. I can beat that thing with my eyes closed.
-
I used to think I was the bee's knees at Batman (NES), Lords of Thunder (TGCD) and Street Fighter II CE or Turbo on SNES.... I'm alright at some fighters like KOF '98 ('99 Dream Match) and CvS 2 for Dreamcast.
Damn, I'm probably out of practice on many of these... I'll have to spend some time playing more games and get back to you on this. :P
-
When I had the time, I used to play each new game I got to death, mastering them and searching every inch for secrets or exploits. All the more so with games I loved. That's how I figured out ways to skip most of Dragon's Curse and Shapeshifter.
I got finishing the original Zelda down to around twenty minutes. Would get to the end of FFIII SNES in a day and a half, did timed runs of Phantasy Star and also maxed out the characters in most RPGs when it wasn't necessary. I submitted a winning high score to EGM for Bloody Wolf, but they never published it.
In grade six, every day day after school I hiked down to Zellers and played through Black Tiger on a single quarter. I took the long way through each stage, racking up all the points I could. Once I got to the final check point without dying, I'd walk around killing enemies until the timer ran out. On my last life, once the time was almost out, I'd finish the game and enter the hi score.
-
sensible world of soccor
-
Top Gear on the SNES
-
i play fighting games competitively, so i would say im pretty good at finding what works best in fighters. I think im pretty good in SF 2 super turbo and sf4

Good call on batman (NES). Last time i played it in december, i got to joker on first life. Took me two to beat it

Holy shit! That's impressive!

Countless hours when it was released.
I can also put a hurtin' on mega man 2
-
i have always been fantastic at driving games... Outrun on the sms was one the first driving games i loved and played it & finished it over and over on any coarse.
-
I can 1CC the first three NES Megaman games and NES Castlevania. Not consistently, but I've done each twice so it counts. :D

Considering that the current record for a tool-assisted run is over 22 minutes, I doubt it. Even cracking under an hour on an actual console would be quite a feat.

Lesse (off the top of my head):
Space Harrier on the Master System
Space Harrier in the arcade
Super Monkey Ball on the Gamecube
Castle of Illusion on the 16-bit Sega Genesis system
Thunder Force III on the 16-bit Sega Genesis system
Lost my touch over the years:
Kenseiden on the Sega Master System
Shadow Dancer on the 16-bit Genesis system
F-Zero on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Probably many more.

I know that back when I still remembered the exact time (24 minutes?), I found that the current "world" record online was slower. Some day when/if I have the time, I'll see if I can memorize the entire game again and figure out the fastest path through.

Tetris Attack
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention this game. Me and my friend have epic battles and wanted to find other people to play against but I have only seen one tournament for it at PAX East and I didn't go.
-
Back in the day my girlfriend and I played Tetris Attack a great deal, and no that's not a euphemism.
The year before last when I went to the game show in Cleveland I was thrilled to see they were running a Tetris Attack tournament! However they way they did it was...stupid. They had you play Endless mode with some specific settings and going until you died and comparing scores. The only way I could imagine for this making sense to anyone in any way when there is a PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL VERSUS MODE in the game was that some weird dude in the area wanted to see how everyone else was at playing this great game in a f*cked up way.
When I went to play I got crushed by not just one guy who had mastered this bizarre mode of play, but by all his friends too, all of whom evidently think that a great way to have a tournament is to have a mob of people stand around watching someone play a 1 player game.
The actual game of Tetris Attack is very very good. Its super strategic and also reflexive. The music is terrific and the graphics are great. It was a perfect send off for the SNES (I think its US only) before Nintendo descended into a pit of blurry foggy polygonal mediocrity that they still haven't quite recovered from. IMO the only versus puzzle game that is better (or maybe equally as good and not actually better) is Puyo Puyo Tsu.
I have Panel de Pon on the GC Nintendo Puzzle Collection, and its the same game-playwise, but the graphics and sounds on the SNES...I have to have them. I also have Pokemon Puzzle League for GB and, same thing, without the beautiful graphics its just not the same.
As with Street Fighter, Starcraft, etc I've pretty much only played it in VS mode.
-
The last few years at VGS i've done pretty good at Battle Lode Runner....
As far as other games that I'm really good at...
Atomino for DOS <--- i've played so much of this game its silly
Generally speaking though, I am not great at any game, just usually good enough to have a good time.
-
I think today this thread should be called, by what game are you flat dominated? -> almost every..lol.
But I was really good at Monster mauler (kyukyoku sentai dadandarn ), sourcer striker (mahou daisakusen) & midnight wanderers (Roosters) as well some classic SFII back in the arcade and later at homey. all have uncountable 1lc.
-
Metal Slug far as 1cc it
-
Around where I am at now, it seems that everyone is saying I am the SVC Chaos guy. Hopefully that holds up when we hold the planned barracks fighter tourney that is upcoming :D

I've got quite a few variations. GameBoy Tetris Attack. Pokemon Puzzle League on GameBoy and N64, the aforementioned import only Puzzle Collection. What the game will accept as a combo, timing and a few other things vary from version to version. My favorite is still SNES Tetris Attack.
Why they would have a tournament of a two player game using high scores from a one player mode is just ridiculous to me.

Definitely my favorite puzzle game. There have been a few clone games but they lack in the music or character department.
That is ridiculous about the tournament...the competitive factor in the game lies in versus mode.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty decent at UT2004 and most Ace Combat games
-
I was going to say SF II' CE, but it seems like a whole lot of other people are, too. So... anybody wanna settle this?
I guess I could also say I'm pretty dang good at Tetris. I'm the local champion here in Abilene, TX. That tournament, too was held in the single player format, but it actually made a bit more sense. It was held over the course of a month. You'd pay the entry few whenever you wanted to make another attempt. And the person with the highest score at the end of the month won.
'Course I haven't played in a while, so one of you could probably beat me out of pure rusty-ness. :P
-
Come to think of it, I'm pretty decent at UT2004 and most Ace Combat games
I completely forgot about Ace Combat.... even on expert its just not hard enough for me. It becomes a challenge of "can I destroy every last target on a map?"
-
I used to be really good at Counter-Strike- sometimes, anyway.
-
So great that nobody has chimed in with COD.
-
I almost 1cc'd metal slug 3 the other day, got to the section with the doors where you have to shoot the 3 dots before i messed up; had to continue like 3 times after that.
i'm pretty boss at streets of rage 2 and 3 as well, i can 1cc those with decent consistency
as for multiplayer stuff, my cousins and I go nuts for some War of the Monsters and Spawn: In the Demon's Hand. Spend hours rocking that noise.
...oh, and I'm pretty boss at elmo's number journey.
-

Is it just me, or is Streets of Rage 2 a whole lot easier than 3?
-

It's also a whole lot better overall.
-

up for debate; but i will say that 2 is definitely easier, i can pretty much chain max's grabs through the whole game.
-
Oh man! I totally forgot about SOR2! I wouldn't say that's one I flat out dominate, but I just love playing it. Probably my favorite on the Sega Genesis. So much so that aside from the original cartridge, I own it on WiiVC, XBLA, and iOS, just so I can play it wherever, whenever. 8)
-
Samurai Shodown II with Gen-man. Got ten years practice and can't be beat. Even the mega cheap final boss has issues with me and my superior cheapness.
-
Generally speaking though, I am not great at any game, just usually good enough to have a good time.
Hahaha... Well said as your talking about me as well :P
-
I just realized last night that I dominate at Seaquest.
f*ck yeah, seaquest.
-
I had been playing a lot of Baseball Stars 2 on the Neo Geo lately. Once I figured out how to f*ck over the computer-controlled team, I dominate the shit out of it.
Also was pretty good at Super Puzzle Fighter. It's the only game that I've ever 1cc'ed in an arcade.
Chris
-
That reminds me. Neo Geo Cup 98 Plus Color for NGP. Like most (all?) SNK sports games its really fun...but then I found the exact spot to stand where I can score every time. Scores like 34-1 become common at that time and the game wasn't as fun.
-
Off the top of my head (not complete list), I can crush many games (no cheats, obviously):
RANT: For shoot-em-ups, it's not just about 1CC'ing, I can RECOVER from death and still beat the game. I think that's actually more difficult in many games (recovering with no/few power-ups) than simply playing a perfect game (where, DUH, you have full-firepower the entire time). Many SHOOT-EM-UP folks who pursue the vaunted "1CC" are pussies, in my opinion, because they never develop the skills to RECOVER. This applies to any game, really, where power-ups are important. The Gradius series, I've argued countless times, is actually totally beatable even if you f*ck-up, but it is very challenging and you have to have different strategies (i.e. how best to use the handful of power-ups you'll get).
Time Soldiers (arcade, don't let the horrible SMS port ruin this game. Also, I never tried the emulation but without the dual rotating joysticks I don't think you can fully appreciate the game)
Kaboom! (Atari 2600) STILL ONE OF THE BEST GAMES, EVER
Robocop (arcade) SO DAMN EASY, but fun.
Rush-N-Attack (arcade, NES)
Spy Hunter (arcade, NES)
Gradius (arcade, NES, PCE)
Gradius II (ha! Just kidding, I still haven't mastered this)
Salamander/Lifeforce (NES, PCE)
Parodius (PCE, SFC)
Contra (NES)
Super Contra (NES)
Jackal (NES)
Wonder Boy (SMS) and Adventure Island (NES)
Wonderboy III: Monster Lair (OK, I can easily f*ck-up at some points in the last few stages, preventing a 1CC, but I still consider this pretty damn good).
Lots of old-skool shoot-em-ups (too many to list):
Tiger Heli (NES)
Blazing Lazers (I don't play on pussy mode)
Spriggan
Thunderforce series (on Genesis)
Legendary Wings (NES)
Cyber Core
Super Star Soldier
Soldier Blade
GOT/LOT (fun, but easy)
I can't even waste my time listing really easy games...
-
Sonic 3 (without S&K, which I don't much care for).
The first special stage, I have beaten with the TV off going by the sound coming directly through my stereo. Only took a few tries.
With the TV on, I have beaten the entire game without getting hit, and that's without using Super Sonic or even bonus stages at all. I deliberately avoid them for the challenge (and to shorten the overall clear-time of the game).
-
Also was pretty good at Super Puzzle Fighter. It's the only game that I've ever 1cc'ed in an arcade.
I, too can clown the computer in the arcade on this game. I've never really been able to play against a human player though. If only people still played the XBLA version...
-
I pretty much own Ninja Spirit and Bonk's Adventure whenever I sit down to play them, though I know there are others on this forum who can crush my high scores. I'm also pretty good at Devil's Crush. I'd love to have a competition involving any of those games (though Bonk could take forever ... unless we were all playing simultaneously!).
I'm getting there with Star Parodier and Spriggan.

I agree with esteban to a point, but I think a lot of us have had to learn to recover to get that precious 1cc. I haven't been able to clear many games with 1cc (yet) but a lot of them I played the hell out of and played through multiple times via continues, cheats, magazine strategies, online strategies, roll-up-your-sleeves-and-memorize-the-damn-thing strategies. I love trying to achieve a 1cc clear in the games I play, but that is mere a notch on the pegboard in most cases. I still find other ways to enjoy my favorite games. :)
Btw, the list of games you crush is quite impressive. We have to get together sometime just so I can watch some of your strategies. :P

Heck yes, one of these days we are going to play le video games, drink beer/soda/coffee and cry. I'm serious about getting teary-eyed. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
When I was ranting last night, I should have mentioned that it's the folks who essentially STOP PLAYING SERIOUSLY when they f*ck-up in a shooter that I'm chastising. Personally, I never understood why anyone would have this mentality before beating a game. After a person has beaten a game, I can totally understand the desire to "1CC" (a personal challenge that encourages replaying/perfecting...get your money's worth from the game). So, I should have clarified that bit. DIE FIGHTING, I say (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png), even if it seems futile.
Anyway, to put things in perspective, I still get my ass kicked when I play: R-Type (later levels), Raiden (later levels), any pinball game, any vs. fighting game, probably most "bullet hell" shooters (I haven't spent much time with them, I'll eventually get there, but I'm still playing older games), etc. etc.
I can destroy the first few stages of Raiden (arcade, PS1, PCE), but I still choke on the later levels. I love Raiden, but I just cry when I get to (what I think is the last boss) and get absolutely nowhere. Maybe the "last" boss changes form to a smaller ship (I rarely make it that far)? Anyway, I can't explain why I can't crack Raiden, but I'm pretty sure it's because my paths/patterns are ingrained in me (I haven't altered them in years) and I'm repeatedly creating difficult situations. Also, I panic and instead of tapping the pad/stick to avoid/dodge bullets, I choke (paralysis) or mash the pad/stick (more often).
AND, of course, I wish there were more shoot-em-up fans in the world...so I really shouldn't go off insulting them (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).
-
Well the shoot 'em up genre has always been, for me, a genre that I haven't been particularly good at, but enjoy playing, except for some of the needlessly impossible ones.
I believe the first, and perhaps only, shmup I've beaten was Star Parodier. I've got almost to the end of Axelay on the SNES. (which is one of those ones you have to beat twice to get the proper ending for, a la Ghouls and Ghosts.)
-
Samurai Shodown 1 and original Street Fighter 2. I pumped so many quarters into those machines back in the day.
-
Gate Of Thunder
Lords Of Thunder (can beat on hard without buying any powerups)
Valis Fantasm Soldier (pce version)
M.U.S.H.A Aleste (1cc on hard)
Seirei Senshi Spriggan (1cc normal mode 798k 2 min)
Contra III Alien Wars (1cc on hard)
Super Adventure Island (1 life clear)
Gunstar Heroes
Shinobi III
TMNT Turtles In Time (SNES version)

I was able to beat axelay once. i never tried for the second time. Something i still need to do
-
Yeah, to make things difficult, you have to set it to the hardest difficulty or something like that. Don'cha just love those games?
-
bishi bashi special

with the exception of the first one, all of the NES Megaman games.

Giese, that's some hardcoredness!!
I know I can beat down TMNT IV on hard. I also (found out a couple nights ago-after not having played it in ages) rock at F-Zero. ;)
-
I remembered the other day that I also rock at Street Fighter Alpha 2! I remember picking up the SNES version for the first time, and clearing the game without losing a single round! 8)
'Course today I mainly roll with the Sega Saturn version, the best in my opinion if only for the fact that the controller was made for fighting games.
-
Played through and crushed Marvel Super Heroes, Toshenden URA, Sf Zero 1 and 2, FF Real Bout, Anarchy in the Nippon, and Asuka 120 on Saturn over the past couple of weeks, so umm, yeah, guess I am fairly good at all of those too.
-
Herzog Zwei on Genesis.
-
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on the 360. :D

This is a really great topic and I've enjoyed reading all of it!
For as much as I love playing video games, I was never really amazing at them. I rarely am able to put myself "in the zone", so to speak, to the point where I'm just sort of operating above the game. It happens, but not consistently.
That said, here are a few games (including some that folks usually find challenging) that I used to play until I had some of them down to "auto-pilot":
Fester's Quest (NES)
Robocop (NES)
Mega Man (NES)
Spider-Man (Genesis)
Streets of Rage 2 & 3 (Genesis)
720° (NES)
Flicky (Genesis)
Goonies II (NES)
Karnov (NES)
Rygar (NES)
Aladdin (Genesis)
Mick & Mack (Genesis)
Sword of Sodan (Genesis)
The kicker is that I've gone back over the last 14 years or so and played these all again at various times... and I'm horrible at many of them. How I ever succeeded in Fester's Quest and Robocop is beyond me. Sword of Sodan is so difficult for me now, it's like it's broken.
The only explanation for this disparity in skill is what I imagine most of us experienced: as a kid, I almost never received new games and when I did, I played them to death, regardless of quality or difficulty; there simply weren't any more coming down the pipe anytime soon so I had no choice but to play them, ad nauseam. Same went for rentals: at best, I got to keep a rental for 3 days (Blockbuster). At worst, less than 24 hours (crappy mom & pop stores). When we rented games, my friends and I rarely set the controllers down until we either beat the game or developed a pounding headache and had to back away.
Nowadays, I have too many games and too short of an attention span to dedicate the precious minutes required to develop any long-lasting skill. Between work, home, goofin' in my studio, and myriad other hobbies and distractions, I play for a few hours at a time, at best, and I usually swap cartridges like a DJ swaps tracks. I get a quick fix, play until I'm pissed off and then move onto the next title. When it comes to video games, I wish I could say I still "got it" but the fact is that 12-year-old me would mop the floor with 33-year-old me all the live-long day, and twice on Sunday.
I still tear it up pretty good in SoR games, but I guess that's not saying much, compared to the others.
-
Alleyway for the Game Boy. I know only one person who's gotten farther than me, and he he wrote the faq on gamefaqs. :) More people ought to play Alleyway.

Hell yeah! Time to fire up the Super Game Boy and alley my way to glory!
...Yeah I never really was that good at it, though I should probably spend more time with it.

This is a really great topic and I've enjoyed reading all of it!
For as much as I love playing video games, I was never really amazing at them. I rarely am able to put myself "in the zone", so to speak, to the point where I'm just sort of operating above the game. It happens, but not consistently.
That said, here are a few games (including some that folks usually find challenging) that I used to play until I had some of them down to "auto-pilot":
Fester's Quest (NES)
Robocop (NES)
Mega Man (NES)
Spider-Man (Genesis)
Streets of Rage 2 & 3 (Genesis)
720° (NES)
Flicky (Genesis)
Goonies II (NES)
Karnov (NES)
Rygar (NES)
Aladdin (Genesis)
Mick & Mack (Genesis)
Sword of Sodan (Genesis)
I love Karnov. One of my favorite games. Truly under appreciated, IMHO.
Love that damn game.

Oh yeah, I can stomp a mudhole in the Genesis and Game Gear Sonics.
You know what's funny? I saw that you mentioned excelling at all of the NES Mega Man games except the first. Since the first one is the only one I ever owned, its the only one I'm really good at. I stink at all the others.

1cc King of Fighters 97 for Neo Geo on level 8 using Ralf, Billy and Kyo on my team.
Completing Super C for NES without getting close to losing a life.
Oddly enough I got damn good at Final Lap Twin for TG-16 since I only owned it and Keith's Courage for the first year of having the console.
