Title: Nintendo NES Everdrive - taking pre-orders
Post by: Duo_R on April 25, 2013, 12:44:36 PM
Update 5/2/13

now taking pre-orders. I submitted an order today - it just became available to back-order on Retrogate. I ordered the following:

10 - NES N8
2 - Fami N8

so limited quantities, if you want N8 submit it quick since I only have 2 pre-ordered as of now. Pricing is simple, pick your package - they go up $10 based on what level you want.  I make a little $$$ here but it is really for time organizing, designing and the time it takes to put this all together (as I am learning from the N64 groupbuy). You guys have seen my modder work before - my goal is for you to receive these items and feel like you bought a deluxe package from one of the deluxe sites, but without the deluxe price. I don't ever plan to go BIG on these orders, but hopefully an alternative offering helps drive down some of the prices out there.

Note - for the 2 people that order Fami N8 - the cost for basic or deluxe will go up depending on the price I can get donor carts to fit. If you have some donor carts that will significantly help.

Pricing is as follows (note add 4% via paypal or send as paypal gift payment):

Pricing does not include shipment
Core Package:
$90 - I am making $5 on this package -really for time organizing the buy and also I put the funds down 100% upfront. Big sites online charge $109 for board only so your still saving (even though they get it for less than that) - win / win
* board only

Basic Package
$100
* Dremel work for SD slot
* Label for the cart
* Gray cart from a donor NES Game - option for custom coloring is $5 (Flat Black, Charcoal, Bright Blue)

Deluxe Package

$110
* Everything from the basic package
* Universal Game Case - custom dremelled to fit NES cart
* Glossy insert for the game case
* Simple instruction card for your Everdrive
* Label for the cart
* Custom cart coloring no additional cost - pick your color: Flat Black, Charcoal, Bright Blue)
     - coloring is added for free, so same cost if you want stock grey

Note - for deluxe package I am custom modifying the universal game cases for NES carts. They will fit but I have to dremel some tabs so it will properly fit. I will post pics so you see what it will look like.

Mock-up - not final product

I might be interested in the Famicom Everdrive if the price is right. I already have an NES Powerpak that I never use.

I would love a Fami Everdrive - the kicker for me is not having a Source for the correct case for Everdrive. I would need a bunch of those games that are compatible including a couple so I could practice opening without damaging. If you guys know of a source then that would be more appealing. Otherwise NES Everdrive is just easier overall for me because I have access to NES cases.

I'd prefer the fami version myself. I have two of those Nintendo converter carts (Gyromite and Duck Hunt) that I can toss it into to play on the NES. Plus I was considering getting me a Fami system so it would be win-win either way.

Yep its NES right now not fami....unless one of you is holding out on Gyromite converter carts ;-)

Update looks like I might be able to mix and match Fami / NES. Anyone got a source for dirt cheap fami games? .
Title: Re: Interest Check - Nintendo NES Everdrive
Post by: bartre on April 30, 2013, 10:09:01 AM
maybe a dumb question, but if it's a fami everdrive, there's no problem with US games, right?
and what's the advantage over a powerpak?
Title: Re: Interest Check - Nintendo NES Everdrive
Post by: Duo_R on April 30, 2013, 01:04:20 PM
Yes you can have US games, powerpack is great long time following. I dont beleive it has SD slot however so I think that is the big advantage for Everdrive. Better cost too and Krikkz carts are top notch.

As I understand it, an advantage of the Power Pak is that it has been the popular NES flash cart for a long time now and already has a lot of custom mapper development for it and programmers will likely continue to build upon that.

Those of you who want the Famicom version, know that you can't use it on an NES unless your converter has a real CIC or something very close to it. A stun circuit won't work.  Anyway it's a great device, I just hope Krikzz improves the sound of the FDS and the extra sound that some carts have. None of it is accurate yet. I'd still rather have this than a PowerPak, though.

You know I am too. I had alot of fun making the cover and game label for this one, I went for the 80's retro NES look. It honestly was alot of work but I think some people might appreciate it. The artwork is done, I am thinking of making you guys wait to see the final work  =)

Picked up the cart labels from the local small print shop today, and the cover art for the game cases is printing right now.

Unless you opted for surface shipping, shouldn't be more than a week or two for it to get here.

Though I gotta say, I'm sorta looking forward to it as well. Even got its new cartridge home prepped and ready for it, minus the dremel work for SD card access. Hell, if the SD card will fit in the cart without modification, I may just not do any cutting. Once I get the SD card properly *cough* "stocked" *ahem*, I may not need to remove it from the Everdrive again anyway. :-"

 :)

Yeah Krikzz said 15-20 days plus or minus.

And I have read an MMC can be used to internalize but they look the same size to me.

There is also a mod you can do to internalize the card. Its just convenient to have access.

You planning anymore group buys? Or are ya calling it quits with this? Wouldn't mind getting an ED for the Genny, SNES, and I definitely want one eventually for the Turbo. I remember doing the group buy for the Neo-PCE early last year and it turned into a big headache. Had a lot more heads than what you've been taking though. I wish I'd kept it small now. Don't think I'll ever do one again, but who knows.

Definitively, I like the convenience of having access. Like If I want to add or remove stuff to the SD card. So it is best not to internalize it.

I was referring to this one.

https://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=11025.0

I shouldn't say that the group buy itself was a hassle, but the "hidden" charge that I wasn't made aware of until after the checkout was finished that was upsetting. A lot of trips to the post office, keeping track of who paid what and how much, etc. There is a lot that goes into it, but it's the gratification you get from making a member's day that makes it worth it in the end.

The NES / fami units arrived today
Title: Re: Nintendo NES Everdrive - taking pre-orders
Post by: Duo_R on May 25, 2013, 04:33:16 PM
hey guys - a small bit of bummer news - I didn't have enough time to post but the package arrived pretty beat up, all the boards looked fine inside with the exception of one - it was kinda bent. Clearly a large box hit this one pretty hard. I assumed that unit off the bat - I am dealing with Krikzz so I can wait for a replacement.

I tested all the units, and I assigned them to members as I pulled them out. Unfortunately one member's unit wasn't working even thought it looked fine. That member has already been contacted and aware (and thankfully very patient)!

So I am waiting on Krikzz for replacements on those. If anyone has a Gyromite converter I can take my extra fami board and make another NES N8 for this member - if you got one please hook it up! :)

But besides that all other boards tested and working fine. The SD slots were made today, turned out really nice. I going to do a batch paint of the units that requested custom coloring tonight. This one should move pretty quick.

Again thanks again to the member who was impacted (like my unit) and being so cool about it. Krikzz is a cool guy and should take care of this no problem. I am also going to do a small guide on how to use this, there are things like using the Game Genie codes that won't work unless you know how to follow a specific sequence.

Thanks everyone!

Awesome job, Duo_R! I can't decide if I like the blue or dark gray better. Is the dark gray cart also from vinyl dye?

My NES ED arrived yesterday. The design of the artwork and packaging are fantastic and the blue vinyl-dyed cart looks even better in person. Using a decorative sticker on the inside of the universal game case to cover up the tabs that were cut away was a great idea. I must say, Duo_R, you outdid yourself. Thanks for all your hard work!

I played with it last night. At first I had to copy the NES OS folder to the SD card, no big deal. After that I was ready to try:

I forgot how crazy that game is. Then I tried "rare" games like Ducktales 2 and Snow Brothers.

Then I had a blast playing Bad News Baseball.

Nice review from what I can understand.

Now Castlevania 3 JP does work but you need to do the sound mod on your NES. I think you were saying it didn't work. It's a really simple mod on original NES.

Or did I totally misunderstand that? :)

I said US Castlevania doesn't work but luckily Castlevania 3 JP does, but sounds a bit odd (because of the sound hardware present on the Famicom but not present on the NES).

Ahh ok...I havent tried Castlevania 3 on US. I did get really strange sound on Bionic Commando but wasnt sure if it was the ROM.

Thanks for the review!
