As the title states, what do you guys think are underrated or under appreciated games for the turbo or PCE?
I would have to say Fantasy zone is one that comes to mind. Lots of fun, and a interesting take on a shooter.

Energy and Wonder Momo

Fantasy Zone and Ordyne are both a lot of fun (and cheap).

Override!!! No one talks about that one nearly enough and its music rocks.
-
Double Dungeons. That game gets a lot of hate, but I don't know why. I've always liked it because it strips old school dungeon crawlers to their bare essence. There's no party, no stats, barely any inventory to keep track of, just pure monster bashing action. That's not to say I don't enjoy games like Theron's Quest or Eye Of The Beholder because I do, but I like Double Dungeons more.
-
Lords of the Rising Sun is lots of fun and probably has a greater variety of gameplay than any other aTurbo game.
Order of the Griffon is also underappreciated, which is a shame, since it's the single game worth owning a TG-16 for if you have a PCE.
Vasteel is one of the best Turbo games, but English speaking interest for it seems to mainly be as a collectible.
-
Military Madness doesn't get near the praise it deserves. It should be included in every Top 100 best games ever. Not underrated to TG-16 players (debatable), but to general videogame players.
JJ and Jeff gets a lot of flack, but I think for a 1987 game it is a very good and tight Adventure Island clone. Amazing soundtrack.
Honorable mentions: Power Golf, World Court Tennis. Competent games that don't stand out because they are sports games.

Gomola Speed - Blah blah blah. I was too lazy to find an old post, copy it, and paste the content here. This game is wonderful and RARELY is discussed, let alone praised. DAMN SHAME.
Mesopotamia/Somer Assault - blah blah blah (another copy and paste candidate I was too lazy to hunt for). I dig quirky games, especially ones like this (puzzle/action).
Timeball - Broken record? Yup, I am. Anyway, about the game: f*ck YOU ALL. This is a great game, it's just that folks never give it a chance and/or are not fans of the puzzle genre to begin with. WHATEVER. Sure, the presentation should have been really KICK ASS (exquisite attention to aesthetic detail) instead of being the SPARTAN, UTILITARIAN version we got. Oh well. The core game is still where the fun is at, so the nice visuals I lust for would only have been icing on the cake.
I used to always include China Warrior, JJ & Jeff, and Samurai Ghost in posts like these, but these games have had some support in the past few years so I won't repeat myself.

Military Madness is one of the most praised TG-16 games among non-Turbo fans and made it in EGM's Top 100 games list (http://schnuth.com/?p=42), but the epic Neo Nectaris is painfully under appreciated.
-
I like the concept of Timeball, but I can't move fast enough to figure the puzzles out before I get a game over. I assume that's where most of the criticism comes from. Spin Pair is more my speed.

QFT. This game rocks.
EDIT: To add my 2 cents, Hatris and Volfiev(d) are both enjoyable puzzle games that don't get very much attention. I guess you'd have to be a fan of Qix to enjoy Volfied, but the Hatris enjoyment factor should be pretty universal.

2 games I enjoy playing, I wouldn't think they are under rated thought.

Syd Mead's Terraforming I feel is kinda underrated especially since it's so rare now, but it's a very intense shooter in my opinion.
-
victory run, kato-chan & ken-chan
-

This. I usually talk praise for it in chat at pcengine.freeforums.org. Sometimes around here.
-
override has been on my want list for a long time!

Holy shit yes! Why did I not see this post earlier. I need to learn to read.

Addams family, people!

Addams family, people!
So agreed!

I wish Detana!! TwinBee got a little more love from shmup fans. I love the entire TwinBee series, and I'd say the whole franchise is underrated. Detana is probably my second favorite game in the series (after Pop'n), and, while I know a lot of shmup fans just about always prefer the original arcade versions of games, I think the PC Engine release is the best version of Detana because it's nicely balanced (the arcade version is pretty cheap in its quarter-munching tactics).

I'll support Power Golf and Victory Run as underrated fav's of mine.
Reviewing my current collection of games, I see a lot of games I own that everyone knows are good and also can be found on the cheap. But inexpensive and easy to acquire games are not automatically mean underrated. Alien Crush get's skipped a lot for it's sequel, but I think it holds it own. Legendary Axe does not get enough praise I think also.
-
China Warrior. Definitely.
People are like hurthruhuhruhr its so choppy dhurhdurruu
-
oh, I've got another one. Super Star Soldier.
-
Hatris! f*ck the dissenters.
-
Shockman or it's importable (And not as funny dialog) brother Shubibinman 2!!
I agree about Neo Nectaris, might as well through in Legendary Axe 2 while you're at it! LA gets so much praise, but many people bash LA2 for some reason. I personally think it's a better game.
-
I always felt Impossimole was underrated. It was one of those games where I fought with the controls until I learned how to manage them. And once I did that, the game opened up for me and I was able to finish it.
Plus, it came with Monty Mole stickers! ;)

I agree 100%. I don't really like LA 1 that much but I love LA 2.

LA2 does get over looked while i like LA1 more,LA2 isn't that bad of a game.Beside it playing like Rastan which is a plus in my book.

volfied. it's a jewel

I'm team captain on LA2 bashing. But I did not think LA gets "much praise", at least not in my local. I'm glad other people feel the same about it as I. The sequel might have been better if that called it Rastan, it lost too much of the original for me to have any more interest in.
Josh will agree that SideArms is underrated :P

SideArms is under-loved. Very addictive.
I always thought LA2 was a "must-have" TG-16 game.
Of course, I love LA1, too.
As for VolfieV (someone listed it earlier): it really falls into the "unknown" category first and foremost, but I totally agree that most folks tend to underrate it. WHERE HAVE ALL THE QIX FANS GONE? Seriously, it's interesting how glorious games like QIX/VolfieV have not stayed in the collective consciousness.

I think SideArms deserves a doodle.

It's the atmosphere, it's an awesome game, but it's bleak. Which works really well given the premise.
I add Liquid Kids, Marchen Maze & Cross Wiber

Absolutely. AND YOU KNOW I LOVE THE POWER RING SPACE BUCCANEER on the NA cover...plus, the Red Book from SideArms Special....

Add Mesopotamia to that list. Super quirky Run_N_SlinkyGun

Mr. Heli, I love that game :)

Mr. Heli, I love that game :)
I have to give this a chance. Ever since it was "advertised" in Vigilante (on a billboard or storefront), I've wanted to play it.
Except, once I got the actual HuCARD, I don't think I spent more than 10-15 minutes with it before I was playing something else.

You need to give it another shot. The game has a ton of character and is lots of fun to play. Until the level 2 boss. The Big Sphere of Instant Death. I've never had quite the same love/hate relationship as I have with Mr. Heli. It's completely awesome. For about 10 minutes. Then it serves you a big 'ole slice of FU Pie. And I'm hoping I'm just missing something obvious, but I've reached that boss 5 or 6 times (at least!) and I can't figure out how to stay alive long enough to hit his tiny hit areas a bazillion times.

Yeah that boss gave me a tough time too. What you need to do is shoot at it, and when it comes towards you, fly into the middle of the top of the screen, and keep using the missiles, and never stop firing, so you can destroy the bullets! When the sphere dude flies back to the left, or out, then you can fly back down to the original spot you started in and shoot. Repeat this process over and over again. The game is awesome. :)

STATUS: Could it be that both of you have convinced me to put Mr. Heli at the top of my list for games that are "on deck"? I THINK YOU HAVE, COMRADES. What's sad is that I'm bumping Ordyne (another game I've ignored forever) down a step to make room for Mr. Heli.
IF DREAMS COME TRUE: If the rain continues today, my daughter's soccer game will be cancelled, and then we can play Galaga '88 and Mr. Heli today! She loves Galaga, but I don't know if she'll like Mr. Heli (probably NOT). Then again, she actually likes Crude Buster...so you never know what a kid will like.
