Title: Splatterhouse
Post by: VenomMacbeth on May 09, 2013, 09:55:52 PM
I'd heard lots about this game, but had chosen to ignore it because I'm generally not a fan of beat-em-ups...but then I read that it takes some queues from Evil Dead, one of my favorite horror series.  So, I watched a longplay on YouTube.  The gameplay seems somewhat underwhelming, but I love the artwork (weren't all the sprites hand-painted or something?) and the classic, cheesy horror movie style. I particularly liked the boss where you fight the Jennifer-turned-demon.

I decided I'd look & see how much the game was going for.  Much to my dismay, the cheapest complete copy I could find was around $47.  Ridiculous!  Especially when, for slightly less, I could get either Ninja Spirit or Bloody Wolf (IE more action for my money).  The Turbob version is cheaper, but I hear it was censored a bit and, alas, I lack a turbografx-16.

So what do you think...is it worth the money?  Most of the PCE games I have (and want) are shooters, so I've been jonesing for something a little different.

$40.00+ is the usual price for a pce splatterhouse.True the TG16 version is cheaper in price but 'it is censor in some parts. Also i think splatterhouse is fine for what it is,a good old fashion arcade hack'n'slash side scrolling game.Though i think it's sequels out did it beside my personal favorite being part 3 for the genesis.

By the way ever watch the hvgn compare video ?

It's a short and "easy" game (it may be challenging for some folks).

So...you may get more entertainment from Bloody Wolf (a lmuch longer, and at times challenging) game.

However, I happen to really like Splatterhouse. It's fun. I don't know if it is $50 of fun, but I have enjoyed replaying it many, many times over the years.

Wait for a good deal on Splatterhouse whilst picking up Ninja Spirit and Bloody Wolf first? Is that the plan?  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

there is a hidden hard mode in there too.  I thought Namco did a typical pc engine bastardized port of a fantastic arcade game but I now grown to love it.   The music again took me some time to adjust and enjoy it compared to the arcade version but I think it sounds great through stereo output/headphones.

I'd heard good things.  I found a loose copy for a bargain price, and eagerly awaited it's arrival.

When the day finally came, I violently jammed the Hu Card into my Core Grafx II and began to play.

At first, I was like "o wut?" Nice big sprites, sure, but it didn't really grab my attention.  It was like a sinsiter version of The Kung Fu.

Then things started to happen.  I think it was level 2, the dogs started getting at me, so I resolved to use the shotgun against one of them.  Then I fell down from a bridge.  Then I found out that there's a short-cut when you manage to traverse the bridge.  Then the poltergeist room.  Then the mirrors.  And on.  And on.  I played the f*cker for hours (eventually I left, I couldn't beat a particular boss).

The moral of the story is that Splatterhouse is a great game, and I'm glad I got it.  I actually picked up another copy with a manual (no case grrr) and passed a Splatterhouse huey to someone here, and it wasn't anywhere near $50 IIRC, maybe half that.  You never know, maybe I'll find one with a case...

Splatty for pce is a good game. Sure graphically wise its not exactly the arcade
version, but every elements of it are there.
And a must have ir is anyway.

Aye I cannot fault the gameplay.

Splatterhouse has always been kinda pricey and I don't think it's as worthwhile as many other Turbo/PCE games, particularly Ninja Spirit and Bloody Wolf. If it makes you feel any better, the identical PCE version of Ninja Spirit goes for even more than PCE Splatterhouse. So just buy NS and BW for TG-16 and think about what a great deal it is. :)

If you don't want to spend a bunch on it I have a loose card of the PCE one listed pretty cheap on the minimum bid side.

Ebay sales are limited to US buyers only though, but I can pull it for a forum member for the minimum bid amount.

if your deciding between the 3, i'd want Ninja Spirit>Splatterhouse>Bloody Wolf
Splatterhouse is a lot of fun. You cant judge it by a video, you really have to play it. Bloody Wolf is ok but not great.... Interestingly these 3 games are some of the only versions that are actually cheaper to get the Turbo versions of.

You won't get this f*cker much cheaper even in its country of origin :)

Why not get both three of them?

It's well worth the monies, especially compared to new cookie cutter stuff at $60 each.

It's an Iconic game to say the least. Made the TG16 even more of a "grown up" machine.

Splatterhouse, Ninja Spirit, and Bloody Wolf are all quintessential TG/PCE games and must-haves. Censorship and loosies won't lessen your enjoyment.

Bloody Wolf i have it, it seems a good game but not a essential game to have in your collection there is a lot of other games i would much rather have like

any of the solider games
legend of the hero tomma
override

I could go on but i wont.

Ninja Spirit is class but that pit of pain suffering and ninja arse kicking can be a bit of a game breaker till you figure out a route and then you lucky if you do it, and yes i have 1 credited it.

apart from that its a fun irem arcade game. they made some good games back in the day.
