Looks like I was the lucky buyer :P
-
I hate you-
Once I got an Avenue 6 pad for $1.25 & 5.00 shipping- but that's not nearly as sweet as your deal-
-
HAHA! Awesome deal you got! I'm surprised it even started at that price. :)
Probably the best deal I got on PCE stuff was Fatal Fury 2 ACD (new) for Y50 ea in Akiba. I bought 2 just for the hell of it, but when I sent a bunch of stuff back to the US, somehow the box busted open in transit and I lost both copies plus other crap too. That sucked.
-
Haha, nice deal!
-
That's a huge steal. Kinda like the time I got both complete copies of Shining Force CD and Snatcher (both Sega CD) for under 5 bucks total.
-
It's a shame that pad stinks worse than a school of fish in an old sock. Still if you're desperate for 6 buttons..
-
U just need an engine to put it in now hey Fami

It is bad? I've always wanted one. It looks good, I don't like the regular pad.
I wonder why they sold it for only five cents ....
-
I got one with my Duo RX, the D-Pad on it is horrible and I've gone back to using my bog standard 2 button pads.

I got one with my RX and I've always liked it, but I know what you're saying. The D-pad feels sloppy sometimes. I've been trying to find another one that isn't a fortune, so if anyone has an extra lying around let me know.
I've always wondered- Is there a way to mod a PC-FX pad to work with a PCE- anyone know?
-
How well does it play with SF2?
-
Not like an arcade stick, but a good as any other pad I've used(ave 6 for pce). If you are comparing controls inbetween systems with SFII I think its better than the Snes(I don't like shoulder buttons) and the same as a 6 button pad for the Genesis.
-
I actually would prefer a Hori PC Fighting stick.
I'm a huge fan of hori's Japanese style sticks, every competitive console fighting game tournament I been to, alot of people used Hori.
-
Any recommendations for a really good controller? I don't like the original controller and I can't play using a joystick.
-
The best 6-button controller is the Hori Fighting Commander PC. I have two of them and there perfect for Fatal Fury Special and World Heroes.
-
I thought the six button Duo-RX pad is really great, and I have no problem with it for Street Fighter II'. I also have a Avenue Pad 6 (though it's controller port gives me annoying problems), I actually prefer the RX pad more for fighting games. For non-fighting games or non-six button games, I stick with the good old PCE or Turbo Duo pads, they are some of my favorite pads in gaming :) . Comfortable, slick, and convient. Similar to the NES pads (which I also love, but that's definitely on debate with other people), but with rounded corners that feel nicer on the hands.

Agreed on that. Now I just have to find one...

I love the Turbo pads and the SNES pads are also great. I hate Genesis pads, although the 6-button pad is better.
This is of course the exact opposite of the opinions(and therefore truth) of every U.S. game mag.
I also don't like joysticks in most cases since they're less accurate. The way always explain it to people is: If you played with a 100 foot joystick, you'd have to run around a huge circle just to move the damn thing. It the same with any joystick, the longer it is, the greater the distance you have to push it to respond. Where as a pad is flat and you're essentially(or literally in the PSX's case) just pushing a button everytime you use the D-pad.
As for the pads, I love both the D-pad and each button on Turbo/PCE pads.
I don't like the SNES pad as much, because of the harder plastic and the barrier of the cross cut in the actual controller. The buttons are nice, but again, I prefer the softer plastic on a Duo pad and I find that the button's springs in SNES controller don't respond as well to the way I play. And nothing beats the rubber RUN & SELECT buttons of a Duo pad.
Now, the big ugly manta ray/boomerang: Genesis pads. I don't mind the way they look, but a team of scientists spent years in research to custom make pads to not sit well in my personal hands. I won't use the metaphor I normally do for the pad, since I don't want this post removed, but the pad is big and sloppy and doesn't respond well. The six button pad is better in everyway and I enjoy using it(especially on SMS), but I still prefer the SNES and Duo pads more.
I don't hate the RX/PCFX pad, but it doesn't do diagonals well for me on too many non-fighting games, so it doesn'tget used anymore. As for the PCFX pad, -I don't really have much of a choice do I?
-
That's right the PCFX controller is based on the Duo RX pad huh?
-

Yeah, although they're not completely the same.

I guess NEC figured than PC-FX players wouldn't want individual turbo switches.
-
I like the original Genesis pad, though I do think they look rather silly, but I enjoy it more than the six button, mainly just for old skool reasons. I'm not very fond of SNES pads though, they just don't feel so comfortable, the d-pad is too pointy and stiff for me, and I've had several break on me, but it's still not really a bad pad. But man, those Turbo/PCE pads are just some of the best out there for standard gaming 8) .
-
Oh and I know what you mean about the plastic on Turbo pads, Black_Tiger - and I agree! Feels great.

I'm sorry, but Black_Tiger's assessment of Genny's controllers rings true for me. Absolutley horrible feel and control. I have big hands (even as a kid) the Genny controller still didn't fit well. I hate the D-pad -- terrible when you want to do a precision manuevre (as say, in most platforming titles). The buttons were also a problem (accidentally hitting the wrong one)... sorry, it just was a complete mess. And this is coming from someone who got used to the SMS controller (man, that thing SHOULD have been like an NES controller, but was far inferior to it).
-
Since I just recently got a Genesis, it came with one of the very first controllers and I have noticed I'm having a hard time reacting with the UP button when I want to use it immediately, so it's a bit annoying. Other than that though, I'm pretty cool with the controller. By the way, Steve, if your hands are too big for the Genesis controller, how do you feel with those smaller pads like on the PCE, NES, and Master System :D ?
The Master System controller is kind of funny. I dig the 80's futuristic look to it (still not nearly as cool as the 80's futuristic look on the NES :) ), but that d-pad is a bit whacked, haha! I like the big buttons though.

Thats Good price and shipping cost ain't bad either. I bought my last two for $20 each. I say snatch it before someone else does.
The genny 3-button pads is one the best controllers I've ever used, and I have nothing but love for them. I don't like the 6-button pad though, the placement of buttons and curve of the controller feels awful.
The sms controllers I could never get used to. The d-pad on those things is strange trying to move diagonal, and long term abuse to the controller will make the thin plastic covering to come off.
The original nes controller is the greatest ever. Built like a brick, damn thing will go thru walls unscathed and survive being submerged in water. I would know, my sister thought it was funny to throw my nes controller in the pool because I wouldn't let her play.
-
The Sega 6 button controller is the best 8 or 16 bit controller ever made, the D pad is awesome and you can't beat the 3x3 button layout with no annoying shoulder buttons.
BUT for the absolute best controller of all time, you can't beat the Sega Saturn controller (the japanese/second USA style one, not the horrible first one), I wish Sega would slap a couple analog sticks on those and remarket them as PS2 and Xbox controllers.
-
The Saturn controller is nice (the version GUTS mentioned) indeed, but still not quite perfect for fighting games, only Capcom ones. For us hardcore SNK fans, we gotta have four buttons in the row, so if it had four-on-four buttons or even three-on-four, that would be quite nice. Too bad you only see that button layout on arcade joysticks :P , but then again, I guess that's where fighting games belong. Also one adjustment I thought would be cooler for the six button Genesis and Saturn pads is if the top buttons weren't smaller and shaped differently than the bottom bottoms. I just think it would feel better and look cooler if they were all symetrical like that.
By the way, the best d-pad for fighting games is the Neo Geo Pocket's click stick, that thing is a power tool! Never in my life would I be able to pull off 360 moves (such as Zangief) into mad combos, and it's so easy to do with the click stick. Hell, you can even pull of those 720 supers into combos with ease on that click stick! The perfect gamepad for fighting games would have to have a click stick just like the NGP's, four on four buttons with a slight curve, and a comfortable feel that had built in technology to prevent plam sweat.
-
I am amazed that companies haven;t copied the NGP style D-pad. It's the best non-analogue controller ever designed.
-

Already been done.
No analogue sticks though (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-49-en-70-rbu.html).
And I agree. This is THE best controller of all time. If you don't agree you must DIE!! ...Well, not really. :P

Yeah, the D-pad on the SMS is totally whacked. I can't tell you how many critical moments ended in frustration because of the D-pad (not the game). I never saw third-party SMS pads as a kid, so I just lived with the pads.
Anyway, the Sega Genesis controllers (all button configurations) sucked. The one thing it had going for it (namely, that it fit nicely in my hands) couldn't make up for its other faults (it fit in my hands, but it was awkward; button/pad placement/response is sloppy, etc.). I'll take an NES and TurboPad over a Genny controller any day.
I don't play fighting vs. games, so I rarely cared about 6 button layout. 6 buttons were an obstacle, not a benefit, to 99% of the games I play(ed), so I stuck (stick) with the original Genny controller when I play.
Here's something you might find interesting: I prefer to use the "official" controllers that came with each console. It just feels more authentic to me. As I said, I never bought third-party controllers back in the day (many of them were pretty shoddy, anyway) ... and my feelings haven't changed over the years (even though much better options exist today).
This is similar to my preference for using composite video on a generic t.v. I like the aesthetic. I'm happy with it. I'm sure I'll get a modded A/V console one of these years, and I'll have to upgrade my t.v. when my current one breaks... but I'm in no rush.
:)

I heard the Genesis game "Ranger X" was one platformer that highly recommended the 6 button controller.
How much do that PS2 version of the Neo Geo CD pad go for?

A brandnew pad will run for $40. I've never used one but read good reviews that it works well for fighting games like KOF and SFII. One of these days I'll have to buy one myself.
Edit: I take that back. Those NG pads should be around $30 brandnew.
-
Ranger X is an awesome game(one you can get for cheap too)- I actually played it for a bit tonight. It would be next to impossible to play without 6 buttons- you have to control 2 mechs at the same time so every button is nessecary.

Yes, I agree with this, I'll only want this many buttons for FIGHTING games or any other game that relies strongly on so many buttons. For a normal sit back game, I would prefer less buttons and this is one of the main reasons why I prefer the original three button Genesis pad over the six button. The Saturn control is great and all because it's nice for fighters, but as the default pad, the button layout just isn't as cool for the normal Joe games. This applies to all other controls by that time and up too, but I just never liked the Playstation pad nearly as much as the Saturn one to begin with anyways.

Agreed again, though I still buy and play around with third party controllers when I want to, I just try to use the original whenever possible. The cool thing about the Turbo Duo/PC Engine is that there are some many first party controllers and most of them feel right at home because they are so similar. However I am extra strict and try to use my original PCE pad when I play my PCE and my American Turbo Duo pad when I play my Turbo Duo 8) . And once again, the NES controller is the koolest!
-
That saturn controller is sick, I might have to order one of those. I'm really liking the 360 controller now though, I think it might possibly be the finest controller of all time. The d-pad is super nice, it's extremely high quality, fits my hand perfectly, and all the buttons are laid out where they make perfect sense. The only thing it's lacking is 6 button on the face, but I can live with 4.

Yeah, I was curious about the 360 controller. There is always a long line of kids playing the 360 demo machines, so I haven't gotten a chance to actually play it and see what the controller is like.
I am also wondering what the heck Sony is going to do for PS3. Personally, I don't think they need to make any radical changes (not that the existing controller is perfect... but they could certainly make things a lot worse with a radically new "untested by the masses" design).
-
I really like the PS2 controller also, the only thing it needs are smaller analog sticks like the Xbox and 360, I think the ones it has are too tall and imprecise. If they put some 360 sticks on the Dual shock 2, it'd be ultimate awesome.

The SMS did get an NES style pad, but obly in Europe and Japan(I think).

Hahahahha! Seriously!
As for the SMS controller -- hot dang! Would that work with a U.S. SMS console (original model)? I would love to get that -- maybe I'll have an easier time getting through Shinobi and Zillion !!!
