Hello hello hello fellow global Turbo countrymen
I have a story to tell, The Turbo Grafx 16 is something i wanted my whole life, Living in the u.k this wasn't an easy task many years ago. My love for the Turbo Grafx 16 ( if your wondering why i'm listing its name in entirety each time its because i never get bored of saying it ) began one night when i had to go to accompany my mum to an audition as she was a play write back then and i had to go with her it was 1990 and i was 12 years old i was still several months away from getting my first console the NES, On route to the audition we stopped in a paper shop and i bought a Batman comic, i used to love reading american comics purely to read the NES adverts scattered throughout, An hour or so later i had scanned my way through the comic book and then as i finished and turned the final page..BLAM...I saw it for the first time on the back page was the Turbo Grafx 16 i literally couldn't believe what i was seeing i vividly recall the screenshot of vigilante at the time i played vigilante on an Amstrad cpc 464 and here this version looked like the arcade, I read every minute letter and detail of that page.........Instantly i was hooked, The Orange and the black logo burnt into my memory forever.
fast forward 20 years and still gaming as much as ever i stumbled across a reasonably priced brand new pal Turbo Grafx 16, Excited didn't describe how i felt the problem was with it being new i was reluctant to open it, i eventually did but only to hold and look at it, The console i kept sealed in the bag and placed it back in the box, I had played most of the games already on an emulator so my fix was momentarily relieved i had attempted some months later to buy another to use but by this time the prices had been jacked up so i didn't, the thing is i didn't want the dull grey pal unit i wanted the bad ass black and orange ntsc ass kicking fire breathing model the real turbo that i had seen all those years ago.
A few months on from here and i was searching around for a step down converter as i had agreed with myself i would buy a real Turbo from the states and then ...and then there she was i discovered something pretty unique, it was an NTSC Turbo grafx 16 black model in a mint conditioned box with three games for £50.00 but this was no ordinary system it had been modified to run on u.k televisions with a scart lead hard wired into the console and i don't know if this is normal or not but it also runs on a u.k power supply without a step down converter............SCORE after all these years of wanting i finally have my dream console, I picked up a games converter and got crazy on some Japanese sites, i know have about 70 hu cards and i love every minute of this damn awesome machine.
So hello to everyone in the community this is my story, i also have something else very special to share with you but that's in the next post
Peace
Yan

Hello Yan and welcome to the forums. Most people give the advice to purchase a Turbo Duo. It allows you to play most of the games already (CD games at least) and you can mod it to play both U.S. games and Japanese games. That is what I did and I am loving it.

Welcome aboard! I always enjoy a good story of guys pining for (and finally getting) their first Turbob.

Most PCE experts actually recommend against buying a TurboDuo or Turbo-CD to play games. The best solution in the short and long run is to get a Duo R/RX, even if you already have a TG-16.

I'm jealous of the SCART lead. Is it true RGB?
-
Welcome to the site :)
-
Welcome! :D :D :D :D :D I agree with BT if you can get the R or RX. but a regular duo will get you through. I have the turbo duo and wish I had got an R/RX just because of a few loading issues, plus the R/Rx looks cooler IMO.
now enjoy the nut show!

Welcome to the Obey Farm^^
Very good story indeed, altough I'm kinda curious about why you were collecting american comix for the included videogame adds reason only, when there were already few video game deticated mags in the market by 1990, which sure already had covered the PC Engine in its full glory by at least beginning of 1988? :)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys
To answer a few points raise:
The Scart connection yes as far as im aware is true rgb, It delivers a flawless picture and obviously at 60hz
With reference to comics well i did obviously enjoy them but the video game adverts took priority and no i can honestly say at that point in my life i had never heard of the pc engine or the Turbo Grafx 16, remember i didn't get my NES until a couple months from this time so i had no reason to be buying any magazines apart from computer one's that supported my trusty old Amstrad.
And as far as the other consoles Duo etc well ive got something far better than any of these things................Check out my next post and ill show you all something very unique.
Thanks

Hey man :) Welcome!
Just to let you know, the Turbo, and most other consoles of the time, simply need a power supply of the correct voltage rather than a step-down converter. I got the one I use for my PC Engine from Maplins.
Always cool to see another forumite from the UK ;)

Hi Man
yeah i wasn't sure about that, When i was looking to buy one from the states i was gonna get a step down as i didn't wish to fry anything, But either ways im just really happy to finally have one and in such lovely condition, Its a really big piece of my gaming collection that has taken many years to obtain.
I actually dont have any mates who know anything of the Turbo or own one the best thing about it was that my girlfriend was really interested in it, she loved the somewhat rarity of it and rang me the next day to tell me she was at work reading up on it ha ha
