Title: RAFFLE: Lords of Thunder VHS Promo - Father's Day Edition
Post by: nullity on June 16, 2013, 05:18:45 AM
Happy Father's Day to all you dads and stepdads out there.  To honor our fathers, I'm giving away a VHS LoT promo tape.

Rules for Entry:[ul][li]You must share a video game related story about your father.[/li][li]If you have no such story, you must make one up and end it with "True story!"[/li][li]You must promise to never use or provide my contact info for use in subscribing my family to gay porn. I'm looking at you, Professor.[/li][li]I had this in storage forever. I have no VCR to test with. If the tape doesn't play right, you agree not to sue or libel me.[/li][li]Winner will be chosen 6/22. Please enter by 6/21.[/li][/ul]
I'll start:

My earliest video game memory was of playing Atari 2600 baseball with my dad.  He knew that you could use the joystick during a pitch to make the ball not only curve, but entirely break the laws of physics.  I could never figure out how to do this, so he would always stomp me badly at this game.  I would get so pissed!

WOW!  I 'd like in.  I have MANY memories of playing video games with my father, but I will share a TG-16 one.  My father got the Turbo for Christmas when it first came out, along with a bunch of games.  It was a lot of fun, watching him open it up and hook it up to our console TV.  A few of the games we played that year were, Bonk, Alien Crush, Dungeon Explorer, and Crater Maze.  I have to admit, our favorite times were spent with Alien Crush, as I was always trying to beat his high score, which I rarely did...  Crater Maze was another of our favorites, followed by Dungeon Explorer.  Over the years, he bought many games for it that we played together, but that first year was most memorable.  I have some pics somewhere of him as he opened the system and the games that Christmas morning.  I may try to locate them so I can share em.  :)

Oh this is easy for me.  Back in the good old days before the Video game crash I was a 2 year old boy with a Colecovision with the Model 1 expansion unit.  We had the basic games like Donkey Kong and Ladybug and my god the Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle (Colecovision).

I remember specifically to beat the smurfs you had to jump on a skull.  I could not understand the double jump.  I would yell and scream at the game and my dad would come running in and yell at me, shut it off or what ever dads do to shut op a whining child.  My sister could do it and would make fun of me.  All my dad was interested in was quiet.

Flash forward a few years later on my 386 (After the video game crash my dad refused to buy me any video games, just computer stuff).  He got me the game Demon Stalkers.  Basically a Gauntlet clone but a damn good one.  He played that game with me for hours on 2 player co-op.  I never before or since have played a video game with my dad (He demo'd A10 Tank Killer and then Wolfenstein for me in years to come, but never sat down and played with me)

Such a rare event and I remember it to this day.

So many good games on these computers, mostly Kings Quest and Leisure Suit Larry stuff.  Always fun.

Please enter me.

When I first got my gameboy my dad grabbed it from my room while I was asleep to play.  He sat down on the toilet to play but got so engrossed he sat on the can for 2 hours straight!  When he got off his ass and legs were asleep so he had to hobble and limp around the bedroom to work it out all while my mom laughed her ass off at him.

I guess I have to give a story about my father. We never celebrated Father's Day or Mother's Day while growing up, didn't know such a holiday existed until much later on.  My father likes to sing. One day he had a few to drink and was kinda of drank. He was singing along to karaoke. With a camcorder, I hid around the corner of the room and my brother had the remote to the karaoke. My brother kept turning off the remote and my father keep wondering why it was shutting offs. He was cussing a shit storm. Finally he saw the red light of the camcorder and we busted out laughing.

Sweet raffle dude!

I really don't have many memories of playing games with my dad. We did play through Simpsons arcade once though before a movie. My parents didn't want us to play games all the time so we only had a handful of games for our NES. Every once in a while my dad would surprise us though with something and he bought us City Connection. I always thought this was a crappy game at the time. Looking back though my sister and I played the crap out of this and I love this game to this day.
He watched me play some FFVII years later and was blown away by the awesome graphics lol
Now me being a dad with a video game obsession my parents were trying to avoid me having, I play games with my 2.5 year old all the time. He only wants to play "bubble games" (puzzle bobble) "petris" (tetris) or "race car mini cooper games" (neo thrash rally).

When I was quite young (maybe 6 years old?)  I used to sit and watch my dad play computer games...  I remember watching him play Civilization for DOS.  Id sit there for hours and hours.  Eventually one day I just turned the computer on and started playing.  That was how my life as a gamer started.  Even though he said it would be too complicated for me (Civilization that is) I'd still play it.  Even today, I'll sometimes go over to my folks house and sit and watch my dad play PC games.

Thanks dad for getting me into all this! :D

Here's a pic I caught of my dad playing Tetris.  I think this was at a condo or something on a family vacation maybe 10 years ago...

I'll enter.  I find these promo things neat.

Anyway, some of my eairliest memories are of Video Games and my dad.  Way back in what seems like forever to a young'n like me in a time know as 1991.  My Dad brought home a Turbografx he found in the local paper for $80 bucks.  Turbo Stick, Pads, Tap,  some of games ect. I use to watch him play for hours (including boxy boy)and I got to play Bonk a few times.  Flash forward a few years and  I was finally told santa could bring me my own game system. [ IF only the sales associate had talked them into getting a TurboDuo, but no I was cursed with a SNES.  While I still love the nintendo stuff, I missed out on so much turbo I never existed.]  Well when I finally got my system, My dad showed me how to hook it up to the TV, turn it on ect.  I had got Mario kart and couldn't figure out how to make sharp turns, and my dad spent most of Christmas morning explaining how to do it.  I never did figure out how he knew all the secrets to the game before he played it.  Sadly he can no longer play games, but he'll still watches with curiosity ever time he's around and a new turbob game comes in.

The first time my dad (rip) played videogames was that Christmas of 88' when I got my NES.

We certainly had a lot of fun playing Super Mario and Duck Hunt. That day my sis an I only made it to stage 1-2 and my dad made it to 1-3.

The game we played the most was NES Tecmo Super Bowl. There is one particular afternoon I remember. My cousin visited us that day.

Dad was a Packers fan, my cousin a Cowboys fan and I'm a Niners fan. After my dad defeated the Vikings in the wildcard the next game was against the Cowboys which meant he would face my cousin for the first (and only) time.

Dad should have won by a wide margin, but thanks to those Packers players low skill stats, a bunch of third down opportunities were missed. In a dramatic fashion my cousin tied the game on an Emmith Smith run with 20 secs left in the game.

At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 17. My cousin won the toss and got the first possesion in OT. On the first posession my cousin moved the ball to the other side 48 yd line. 4th down and 10

Earlier in the game, my cousin scored using that reverse / toss back to the QB bomb play. So, instead of punting or going for the "superman" field goal, guess what play my cousin picked. My dad picked the same play, blitz coming and Fumble!!! , Packers ball on the Cowboys 45.

Next play is an offtackle run. Woodside dodges a tackle, dodges another tackle, to the 30, the 20 the 10, Touchdown Packers!!!

Next game was the NFC championship which I won 28-14 with the super 49ers, not much drama there.

Any chance you could scan the cover for me? I may be able to use it for one of my custom covers. (cover project) http://www.ektophase.com/TG16/T2.jpg
The reason I really want this is because it has the way nicer lords of thunder title text.

If so 600dpi and if you have an option to have descreen on. my email is ektophase at gmail .com
may want to zip 7zip or rar it because it could be around 35 megs

I don't want to be Negative Nancy, but the printing on the VHS sleeve isn't crisp and sharp (at least, not on the handful of copies I've seen over the years)...hopefully it will still be useful.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Wow very cool raffle. I would like in on this.

My earliest memory of my father and gaming was the telestar Arcade.  If your not familiar with it, look it up, its quite the piece.  I couldnt have been but 4 years old, i remember him playing it at my grandmothers house.  Later on as I grew up it sat in the basement of our house and I actually hooked it up to see what it was all about.  Def an interesting machine but Compared to the Odysee 2 it was not very interesting.

Awesome thanks for the scan nullity, yes you guys are right its a little too low quality when compared to a scan of the original cover. Also too much of the artwork is cropped on the left side.
I can still use it for reference. And I may try and recreate the title text/logo at some point.  :)
thanks again
