Title: Gunboat doesn't have an ending?
Post by: Punch on June 16, 2013, 03:43:44 PM
Yes, I played it until the "end". I got to the Rear Admiral rank however no more missions were unlocked and it didn't show a congraturation screen. Do I need to do ALL missions?

By the way, this game is lame but it is actually pretty easy once you learn the controls and quirks and get used to the low framerate and unprecise aiming. I liked how you change between weapon views with the turboswitches. At least it is more playable than the more advanced (and more lame) Falcon.

Because nobody ever managed to cleared this one (at least not without carrying away severe brain damages) noone knows for sure if it has an ending or not, except its programmers from back then, but which all of 'em ended up in the nuthouse up in togus, so the legends tells.
So you might be the very first witness, that also still is able to report to us that it in fact has NO ENDING.

Hmm, I wonder if the Amiga version has an ending??

Ah, it has a PC version....even this doesn't show any ending as far as the player can figure...

The PC version is so pretty and smooth... what a shame PCE. It really looks like you're in a boat at night in a vietnamese jungle.
Anyway, I guess I reached max level (Rear Admiral) with all levels unlocked (all Vietnam, Colombia, Panama, in the first two the last mission is a repeat of the first "training" mission but without invulnerability, I assume that's also true for the last campaign)... of course you're not required to play all missions to max up the level but I'm definitely not playing the remaining missions to find out if there's an ending haha.

I met the programmer of this game, we talk about videogames on lunch time when the doctor lets me and him out of our rooms sometimes.

Is he the programmer of this specific version of the game, or did he do a different version(or perhaps multiple versions?).  I think there's 4 versions, Turbo, Amiga, PC, & ZX Spectrum(of which I'm sure the latter got the shortest end of the stick).

P_D, I emphasized key phrases for you. Just because you met Ghost Manor artist's son, doesn't mean everybody has been as fortunate.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Punch registered just to show off that he is the worlds greatest Gunboat player.

I don't know anyone who has ever played as much as you anyway...

...so you're saying you don't really know whether or not there is an ending? The world may never know. ) :

Do not worry my friend, I'll put Gunboat in the Game of The Week list so everyone can have fun trying to find it ;)
In a more serious note, I think I'm going to replay it someday, soon. I feel that I still need to complete it for some reason.

HA AHA HA HAHAH AHAHA AHAAHAAAAA OMG ROFL

Yes, I remember myself putting it away after 5 mins of fiddling around with it, somewhere back in the early 90ies.

Might give it a shot again...some brainless fun wouldn´t hurt for a change  :D
