My first question when reading this article was, "WTF is GREE?"
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/06/22/wow-hudsons-star-soldier-isnt-entirely-dead/
If you had a TurboGrafx-16 and liked shoot ‘em ups you probably remember the name Star Solider. Super Star Soldier and later Soldier Blade were some of the best shooters for Hudson’s console. Fast forward to 2008 and Star Solider remerged with Star Soldier R, a WiiWare game with a two minute and five minute score attack modes.
Then Hudson got completely absorbed by Konami and most of Hudson’s projects including the completed Bonk: Brink of Extinction were put on ice. But, there is a new Star Soldier game… thanks to GREE. Star Soldier for GREE is a port of the 1986 console game redesigned for mobile phones.
The game has a vertical layout and an option to turn auto fire on or off. Star Ocean for GREE also has the two and five minute score attack modes, Caravan mode, achievements, and additional ships to pilot.
You can get Star Soldier for GREE on iTunes as a free download.

...the completed Bonk: Brink of Extinction...
Jerks.

Poor Hudson, you've sunk to this?
*sigh*
At least it's something, I guess.

Evidently Gree is some kind of Facebook sorta thing...I guess.
-
gree released r type and blazing star for android. They are pretty good for cell phone ports. Blazing Star has some nice image settings like scanlines and stuff.
-
I'd like to see how those special modes for Star Ocean work.
-
Gree is some sort of Japanese mobile game developer, mostly known for crappy digital card games.
-
Is it supposed to be out on iTunes now? I did a search and didn't find anything.

Search for "Gree". From what I can gather, it's a social app that focuses on gaming. You'll then download it within the app, I guess.

If it isn't a stand alone app, I'll pass. :? Appreciate the response though.

If it makes you feel any better Hudson Soft is dead.
It doesn't for me :(

What happened to the chip manufacturing part of Hudson? Is it still around or did it get absorbed by another company as well? Konami only obtained the software making section of the company right? Would be weird seeing the konami logo on ICs and shit.

Cool! I have several friends/former co-workers who work at GREE San Francisco!

A SAD TALE: I joined this (sorry, MG!) lame GREE because I was curious about Star Soldier emulation on iPad (caravan modes supposedly available)... But, I haven't found it! (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)
BOTTOM LINE: I would say "Don't bother joining GREE", but if you do, please help my feeble brain find Star Solder...my user name is the predictably pathetic "f*ckSocialGaming"...very lame name....

Wonder if there is a way to trick iTunes into thinking you have a Japan account? Tried switching my region/country to Japan, but still got the same pop-up.
-
Maybe try setting up a VPN or using a proxy behind your wifi to set it up as a Japan IP address then try? More than likely the store is doing a region check on the IP address used to access it and it's coming back as a non-Japan one. It's just a guess, but you might be able to spoof the store by doing this.

Isn't that the same social crap that got the so awaited Resident Evil Outbreak "sequel"? Next.
