Title: My SNES paint job
Post by: esadajr on July 15, 2013, 06:26:44 AM
I don't care if my SNES is no longer "original yellowed plastic" or "collectible". It just looked awful. Now, I think it looks a bit better.

I'd paint what gray stuff you've left on there.  It looks kind of funny right now.

I would go with black for these spots.

I like it. Been thinking of doing something along those lines myself with my spare SNES. Nice work.

Agreed, though I'd stick with red for a more simple color scheme and I'd get some stickers/transfers to replace the lost labels.  In any case, she looks much better now.

Prior to the paint job, that could quite possibly be the ugliest SNES I have ever seen.  It looks like it was stored in the bottom of an outhouse.  I would have kept a dust cover on it non-stop just so I wouldn't have to look at it.

Nicely painted.  I'd paint the rest as well, just to hide the last little bits.  With them unpainted, the memory of the "ugh" factor will still haunt you every time your eyes fall on the unpainted bits.

I think the original SNES suffers from discoloration worse than any other console I've seen, and just like the OPs, it's always distinct sections of plastic that look like they sat in a cesspool, while other pieces look fine.

Good job, it does look a lot better now.  Is there a reason why you didn't paint the yellowed trim around the controller ports?

Pretty cool!  Good job.  Definitely paint the remaining but I see why you didn't.  Want to keep the logo eh?  =)

Heh, I didn't notice that; I thought they were painted gold.

BTW, when I first read the title of this thread I thought it said "My SNES hand job".  Man, was I disappointed.

I just looked at the original post again.  That unpainted SNES almost makes me want to puke.  How could you live with it like that?

Thank God you painted it.  It looks 1,000,000 times better.

No retrobrite !? Still it doesn't look bad in red but that paint job does make it look like a cheap toy.

I didn't feel like messing with that part. I may try a brush later.

Quite close. It was on a closet along with other electronics. This was my friend's SNES. About ten years ago, he was looking for rca cables and stumbled upon it. He offered it to me and I took it. It was just the control deck and a yellowed taped controller (which I still have btw).

Nicely painted.  I'd paint the rest as well, just to hide the last little bits.  With them unpainted, the memory of the "ugh" factor will still haunt you every time your eyes fall on the unpainted bits.

I'll go for it latter. Perhaps black for the controller ports.

Go for it, while at it, go for the "region mod" as well.

I liked the idea of not painting those surviging gray parts (with the exceptiong of the dust cover). Also, the tech support label and the bottom labels remain intact.

It looked to yellow for that.

Painting it may have been a bit extreme.  You could have just put stickers on it to cover the yellow, like on the NES in that photo. ( :  J/k... I think it looks very nice, but must echo the idea that it would look even better if the remaining yellow areas were painted black.

The NES had the stickers way before it started to yellow. I'll paint the controller ports and add some Niners stickers.

Very nice, what kind of paint did you use?

The red paint was a Plastic "no primer needed" kind of spray. The gold one was regular metallic spray. I got them at a well known hardware store.

I'll take pictures of the spray cans for better reference.

STATUS: Why is everyone hating the "before" picture and criticizing it? I thought the ashtray in the photo was a very good reproduction of a real SNES! ALSO: Is that ashtray clay or ceramic?

Nice!  I painted my SNES god-awful colors right after I sold my Duo bitd so I'd never be tempted to sell another retro system.

I bet if I search through the archives here I can dig up a picture.  It's currently packed up in a moving truck and will be for the foreseeable future.

Indeed.  Thankfully I quickly realized the error of my ways and was obeying again within a couple of months.
