Title: Carbon fibber stick ons... How she look?
Post by: Sparky on July 21, 2013, 12:11:45 PM
Behold my daily commuter and at 400,000 km I thought with a couple Guinness in me it was a good idea to try out some carbon fibre stick ons, cost me $14 for a roll and I can peel it off super easy but I just want to know how does it look? The door handles look tight i think but not sure on the gas tank lid.
I hope negative nanny zeta chimes in as I expect at least a 3 word reply :P
pS: she's a little dirty and don't mine the air vent stickers, there there to stay :) Good or bad I can take it. (( sips wine now)) beware

Sparky I for one like it. Everyone Knows that carbon Fiber pieces make your car go faster! Also looks like a bad ass fix on the Lid, YOU can tell people you ripped that gas tank lid up out in the boonies. doing reverse 180's. Wouldn't have hit the tank Lid but you were busy saving a child's life from a burning building and by the time you got back to the car it over rotated and you saved it all for a small dent in the gas Lid.
Suggestions: Pin Stripes Flame or Racing Stripe - Hood Scoop carbon fiber-ed up.
In all seriousness I like it. It gives it a bit of character. And Cars should be fun! especial when you commute.

You have 400,000 on a Saturn? Holy shit.
The carbon fiber looks excellent. It blends seamlessly. I only have one question for you, do you live in Aylmer, Quebec? BTW, you need to add some speed holes into the hood.

Aylmer, QC is typically the birthplace for car mods after a few pints.
No word of a lie, I once saw a guy repainting his car in his driveway with a paint roller.

The door handle wrap looks fine since it's a small piece. But, I think the gas door looks a little out of place since there's too much contrast compared to the car's paint color. btw, that's a nice car color.
HahHa... Thanks zeta it may look stupid to you but it's still better looking then a mita :p
Do you mean "Miata"? If so, I really don't care about what someone who thinks fake carbon stickers on a Saturn is rad thinks of my car. There is nothing fake on my car, and virtually no thought given to looks. It's for driving, and when I go to track days I see tons of Miatas and no Saturns. The WalMart parking lot however is full of cars with dumb non-functional shit glued to them.
Btw, the fake Time Machine is a 24 Hours of Lemons cars, a sort of "crap can rally". Outlandish decoration is encouraged. It usually falls off part way though the race. :)

Its not faster than a Viper or a blown Vette, but the driver often is.
Here is a video of a guy with quadruple my horsepower not getting out of my way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZOVZ6R7cYU
Wait, what? So the driver of this Vette is out for a Sunday drive, making absolutely no attempt at all at pushing his car to anywhere near it's capabilities and all of the sudden you're Mario Andretti?
Also noted that nowhere in that video are you even coming remotely close to passing that Vette.
Title: Re: Carbon fibber stick ons... How she look?
Post by: SignOfZeta on July 24, 2013, 10:20:13 AM
It's a track day, not a race. I can't pass him unless he waves me past, which he obviously should have done. He was faster on the previous lap but he scared himself and slowed down a lot for the next one. This is pretty common for Vette owners. They usually just want a car to brag about but are too scared to actually use it. A qualified C5 or C6 driver is a force to be reckoned with, but they are rare. The local Vette club doesn't even let non-Vette owners run with them, IMO it's because they are afraid the MGs and Integras will make them look bad. :)
BTW, I didn't even mention my car until Sticky besmirched it by calling it uglier than a Saturn. I never said I was a racing master or anything so don't make it out like I was bragging or anything. I'm just saying that I'm faster in my 100HP Miata than most guys in 400 HP Vettes. Seeing Miatas outrun vastly superior cars is a common site at track days and autocross events. If you look at my other videos from the same day you'll see my lap times are much faster than when I'm stuck behind this slow poke.
So in other words, the car does what it's supposed to do.
Title: Re: Carbon fibber stick ons... How she look?
Post by: Necromancer on July 24, 2013, 10:46:07 AM
That's common with Miatas. They're not 'manly' enough cars for regular joes, so the guys that do buy 'em are getting 'em for their capabilities, which they know how (or learn how) to exploit.
It's not a race but your boasting as if you could fly by him based on your driving skill. Had you been up on his ass, he may have waved you by, but you wern't so why would he?
He was faster on the previous lap but he scared himself and slowed down a lot for the next one. This is pretty common for Vette owners.
Having raced with my dad in his Vettes, I can tell you, based on each Vette and it's power, it can be scary as all hell. The power is amazing and hard to keep the wheels on the ground coming out of turns. Not really a problem you're going to have in a Miata.
The local Vette club doesn't even let non-Vette owners run with them, IMO it's because they are afraid the MGs and Integras will make them look bad. :)
I never said I was a racing master or anything so don't make it out like I was bragging or anything.
You were attempting to brag about your driving skill though. You posted a video of "track day" where you clearly say it isn't a race yet tout how you are held back from passing a Vette that you aren't even close to passing. I just found that amusing.

Sounds like you don't know what a track day is. You don't race other cars (just yourself more or less), but you're not supposed to hold up traffic either.

I understand what track day is. What I dont get is where in the video the other car holding him up? Looks like he does pull up close for just a few seconds and at 1:21 of the video the Vette notices he is there and steps on it out of the corner sliding the ass end. After that the Vette just keeps it's distance, Zeta is never really held up.

If you want to feel what I feel go to a Playstation 4 forum and start talking about how cool the Dreamcast is. You'll get similarly uninformed discussion.

If you listen to my car's engine you can tell that I'm lifting way early for the corners and sometimes not even having to brake. The Vette had already been blue flagged. Passing in this run group is only allowed on the back straight and the start/finish straight and in those areas you can see he pulled ahead. There is no point in driving closer to him when he's already ignoring a blue flag. If had had forced a pass I would be been banned from the track. You clearly don't understand how this stuff works.
Like I said, if you watch my other videos, the ones where no one is in front of me, I'm much faster. Even the one where I'm held up by another Miata I'm able to go faster. I'm not bullshitting you or bragging or whatever. I'm an extremely modest person. That dude in front of me was slow and noobish. Notice his rear getting squirrely near the end when there was no real reason for it? He sucks. I don't know why you are being so confrontational with me about it.
As for the Vette club thing, this video was shot on an Alfa Romeo track day (or possibly an open day, I can't remember). The I've also run with the Lotus club. AFAIK every club in Michigan allows OT motors except for the Corvette club. They're dicks. Nearly every Vette owner is a dick. It's the kind of car a dick is attracted to.
Title: Re: Carbon fibber stick ons... How she look?

Speed is relative. It all depends on the track. I used to live in Indianapolis Indiana and spent alot of time at raceway park. I personally watched a race tuned mini cooper slaughter a vette on a road course due to all the turns the vette had to slow down for. On an oval it would never have happened. To many factors also contribute to that. Dodge neons and Miata's were popular on road courses due to there excellent handling. They did not amount to shit on straightaways. Because of their power vettes had to slow down huge in the right corners at raceway park nullifying there speed. raceway park was 2 and a half miles. If a race tuned Mini cooper and vette started at the same time, the mini cooper always finished first as 1 1/2 miles of the track was tight corners and the vette's advantage gone.

Got to respect the Miata. They're affordable and make an outstanding track car by adding a few light mods.
But based on color alone, my vote goes to Sparky's burnt orange Saturn. That's definitely the faster color. :P

There is no point in driving closer to him when he's already ignoring a blue flag. You clearly don't understand how this stuff works.
Oh ok, these are all points you're making AFTER your initial post of:
Its not faster than a Viper or a blown Vette, but the driver often is.
Here is a video of a guy with quadruple my horsepower not getting out of my way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZOVZ6R7cYU
I had no way of knowing any of the above listed info but none the less, I was merely responding to your post of the video and that it didn't seem like you were held up to me. Now as far as the blue flag, it wasn't a race where he could be penalized for holding you up. I thought blue flags on a track day were more of a courtesy, am I wrong?
Like I said, if you watch my other videos, the ones where no one is in front of me, I'm much faster. Even the one where I'm held up by another Miata I'm able to go faster.
I actually did watch all of them. Your lap times where you have clear track were 1.30.01 and 1.32.69. Which clearly show you faster with clear track. The one with the Miata in front of you, you ran 1.38.11 and you ran 1.34.57 with the Vette in front of you. So actually you wern't faster with the Miata in front of you vs. the Vette, like you're saying. Your slowest video was 1.42.51 w/ the Mustang. Now in that video you are CLEARLY held up by the other drivers.
I don't know why you are being so confrontational with me about it.
Was just my opinion that you weren't really held up by the Vette with a tiny bit of poking at you w/the Mario Andretti thing. Relax killer, it's a discussion forum and I'm discussing my opinion. :-s
Indiana must be filled with Vette drivers that don't know how to drive or nothing newer than a C4.
Like I said, it depends on the track. on the road course we were at, the corners were so many and so tight, the vette spent most of its time under braking, only really getting to open up in the mile long straight away. The Mini coopers, Miata's, Nissans, and Neons were going through the corners at a much higher rate of speed allowing them to easily catch faster cars on the mile and half of turns. There were probably 40 cars on the track competing in three different classes so the vette was not only faster car getting its ass handed to it. Most Road courses benefit better handling cars, not faster ones.

Most (not all) Corvette owners are dicks, and share that same snobbish "better than you" club mentality that Harley owners do.
To me, the big difference is that a Harley can still be outperformed in any aspect by a machine half its price. The fact that the Z06 is compared to a Ferrari at probably twice the cost is a testament to that.
Title: Re: Carbon fibber stick ons... How she look?
Post by: SignOfZeta on July 25, 2013, 08:55:29 AM
Right, because a C6 can't turn a corner and is a poor handling car. :-s
A C5/C6 is a better car than a Miata in nearly every category. Even in areas like fuel economy and trunk space, and while its nearly three times the price, the prices start to even out as they age. It's also interesting to note that the most lusted after high dollar mod in the Miata world these days is a Vette engine swap.
The reality though is that using the full potential of a late period Vette is nearly impossible. There are very few tracks in the world where they can actually get anywhere near their top speed, possibly none on this side of the Atlantic. Most of the time driving a car that powerful is spend holding back the car's potential, wishing you could get on the power more. With a 100HP Miata you can drive all-out almost constantly with the added bonus of not having to buy a $1200 set of tires every track day.
BTW, Vette owners are some serious a$$holes %90 of the time. This is changing now that Vettes are actually good cars, a recent development, but it's truely a car for a$$holes. Anyone who disagrees is probably too much of an a$$hole to realize how true this is and probably would post a brag picture of themselves in front of a TV running Magical Chase in stretched mode. This isn't some theory I came up with myself, it's a pretty established concept. Even many Vette owners agree, since a$$holes tend to not get along very well with each other when their entire life is essentially a dick measuring contest through a microscope.
There is even a thread about this issue here on this Vette forum.
Anyone who disagrees is probably too much of an a$$hole to realize how true this is and probably would post a brag picture of themselves in front of a TV running Magical Chase in stretched mode.
If the people on this forum who were there, and laughed along with me as the pic was taken choose to verify this: The pic was taken just to stir a little shit with forum members not to brag. Which clearly worked as your panties are still in a bunch over it.
Never let the actions of a few ruin your opinion of the whole group no matter whether it's Corvette owners, democrats, republicans, midgets, teachers, etc.
Solid advice.

Right, because a C6 can't turn a corner and is a poor handling car. :-s
No, because a c6 needs to break longer and slow down more to handle tighter turns than small cars do. If you don't think thats the case, then why do high speed ovals have high banks to keep cars on the track? On road coarses especially tight ones they often do not have those banks forcing faster more powerful cars to slow down more and for longer distances. smaller cars weigh less and can retain a higher rate of speed throughout the corners as well and break less. If you don't believe me, turn on Imsa gt racing thats on during the weekends and explain to me why your c6's are getting stomped by audi a8 quatro's on tight road courses. Now, be smart enough to understand that if you reverse the situation and have few corners and more straightaways the c6 vettes gonna stomp the shit outta most stuff out their.

Tight tracks are more of an equalizer. With no room to stretch their legs the 700HP race prepared Vettes are on the same turf as the 200 HP race prepared Midget because there is a limit to how well rubber can grip pavement, no matter how much of it you have. It shouldn't actually make the Vette slower though, unless its having trouble keeping its tires and brakes hot or something, and that would only be the case with a really overly prepared Vette, as in LeMans spec.
BTW, banked ovals are banked because slowing down for anything is very unpopular with those sorts of people and the cars are hilariously artificially low tech. There are 180MPH corners in F1 that are more or less perfectly flat. The 130R at Suzuka, for example.

Herc seems a bit grumpy on the subject. Does he drive a Vette.... slowly?
Does Audi really race A8s? If so they must not be anything like the real cars (akin to a nascar 'taurus'), not if they're smaller and lighter than a C6R. I know Audi fields a diesel powered racer in the prototype class, but that's a different set of rules and doesn't compete directly with the GT group; they also race R8s, but those aren't smaller, lighter, or less powerful than the C6.R (nor are they awd).

Exactly. The slower car through a corner is the one that handles poorly (comparatively); how much power it has under the hood is irrelevant unless it's so underpowered that it can keep it to the floor through the corner.

Exactly. The slower car through a corner is the one that handles poorly (comparatively); how much power it has under the hood is irrelevant unless it's so underpowered that it can keep it to the floor through the corner.
Maybe he meant to say R8? The only series I can think of where you'd ever want to race an A8 would be DTM, but they never have since A8s are HUGE. They use A4s, currently an A5 I think, and even those are probably heavier than a Vette.

Tight tracks are more of an equalizer. With no room to stretch their legs the 700HP race prepared Vettes are on the same turf as the 200 HP race prepared Midget because there is a limit to how well rubber can grip pavement, no matter how much of it you have. LOL, no necro, i'm disabled and cannot drive :)

I always loved Corvettes but have never owned one. As a kid (pre-internet) I did a ton of reading up on them, went to dozens of car shows, and basically knew WAY more about Corvettes than anyone who didn't actually work for GM should, including engine/HP specs by year, etc. I've forgotten most of it though.
As a teenager I wanted a 3rd gen. Didn't matter what year, I liked nearly every year of that generation. The urethane bumper years don't get much love nowadays (rightfully so), but they're also relatively cheap and I'd still rock one today. It'd have to be a 4-speed though.

I had a Vette.. I hated it. Fast as shit, though not as fast as the Mopar I built. Handling was really its best feature, other than that it was like riding on a boulder. You feel every damn crack in the road, literally. The Dodge Viper I drove was WAY more comfortable than the Vette. I recently gave the Vette to my Father in Law. It was a 1984, with that Crossfire Fuel Injection mess. Anyway, he loves it, so at least its getting some love now...

Yeah, old Vettes rode pretty bad, and in 1984 they weren't exactly rocket ships either. American V8s in the 80s were very low on power. In this case, 44HP per liter...much better the IROC Z (38HP per liter) or other V8s, but still terrible. Compare this with, for example, a GTI from the same year with 55HP per liter or a 1990 Miata with 72.
It seems like American car companies in the 80s were so bitter about having to use emmisions controls and having their asses totally kicked by foreign companies that they deliberately made garbage on purpose just to be a$$holes.

The 1984 Corvette was the harshest riding Vette ever built. Back in the early 80s, skidpad numbers were all the rage, and GM responded by making the then new C4 crank out some impressive skidpad figures (for the time). However, this translated into terrible ride quality... and from 1985 on, the ride was softened in every new model. Also, the Crossfire was ridiculously slow with only 205hp in 84... yikes. There are 4cyls produced today with better power figures.
The C4s are also very hard to get in and out of due to their very high sills... its like stepping into a bathtub. I've owned 3 C4s (an 89, a 93, and a 96), and I can say theyre certainly not the most comfortable cars for daily use. All the above things were completely changed and resolved with the inception of the C5, and they've kept getting better with the C6 and the soon-to-be-released C7.
Some Vette owners are dicks/douches/etc, but this is true of ALL cars. Try driving into a Mustang show with a Vette and you'll see what I mean. Don't label the car cause a few of its owners are a$$holes. Its not the vehicle's fault.
BTW... love the SC2 Sparky. I have a 1997 5speed with about 120k miles on the clock and use it for my daily commute. In combined city/hwy driving I get an average of 30mpg using 87 octane. Wish I had a 3 door like yours, though. It would make getting the kids in and out of the back seat a lot easier.

Almost ready for the track boys, more carbon fibber... Now on my Saturn logo.. The Mita slayer come-ith.
The logo is originally in an orangey red that really blends in with my car so black looks better I think. ( see rear pict for original colour and the next part I am doing) :)
And thanks for the kind words guys just pissing around, cars should not be taking to cereal but I really like what I have done so far (( shrugs ))
Oh PS: those are tears of joy on my car, she looks so good
You should just wrap the whole car. That would be hilarious.
Hahhhaha..you finally replied oh mr serious I just might & I would be happier then you at the end of the day :P oh I mean track master
Edit... Looks so good you have to admit...?
You should consider the possibility that I do have a sense of humor and maybe it just isn't %100 compatible with yours. Also consider that maybe I am a happy person, it's just you that are unhappy with my comments. Without a diarrheic trail of emoticons after every "joke" it can be hard for some people to tell.
I mentioned the wrap thing because wrapping is getting to be pretty popular these days. I've never seen a carbon fibber wrap, but faux gold and silver are pretty popular so why not?
Personally, I'd go for plaid.

Ha, I am Celtic so plaid/tartan does make sense.
Also fair enough man, i am sure you are a pleasant guy but your replys come off pretty negative at times, I won't judge and I will drop this silliness, but not the carbon fibber.

$14 worth... so if I do the math right that's about 500 yards square you have to use. Once you're done the car will you start wrapping the house? The garage door in carbon fibber would look like hot snot I bet! :)
