Title: 80's cartoons and PCE/TG16 games
Post by: Nando on July 30, 2013, 10:12:24 AM
If you could have your choice of any 80's to early 90's cartoons, which would you have liked to have seen on the PCE?
My votes goes for a MetroidVania like GI JOE game or a Masters of the Universe game, as a action RPG or obviously a brawler. Runner up, Thundercats and MASK.

I guess I would have to think about what best makes a video game. I vote for Ghostbusters (Would have been better than Ghost Manor at least).

Muppet Babies platformer where each level features a different muppet.

They got little to no video game love back in the day & it's a damn shame. (if you mention Convoy no Nazo, I will kill you.)
Lmao Exactly, this franchise works way better in 3D. I think a konami approach could work. Start as a protoform and upgrade and get access to areas as you "evolve" explore etc etc

So many good suggestions so far. Not quite cartoons, but I would have loved to play some X-Men on the Turbo, bitd.

Dinosaucers!
No, wait, Denver the last dinosaur!
Ooh, ooh, Inhumanoids!
Wheelie & the Chopper Bunch(from the 70's, but, I grew with this regardless)!
C.O.P.S.! wow, I could totally hear them replacing that song with Last Alert's title screen, just play Last Alerts tune at when the COPS intro is about 14 seconds in, it totally works!
Dynomutt!
Biiiiiiiionic Bionic Sex..er I mean Bionic Six!
Galaxy Rangers!
Visionaries!
Centurions!
Sky Commanders!
Robotix!(totally the same narrator as the one for Transformers & GI Joe!)
Shirt Tales!
The Hair Bear Bunch!
David the Gnome!
The Racoons!
Danger Mouse!
Hell, have a mash up of Ducktales with Count Duckula
The New Adventures of He-man(haha, I own the dvd, but I've never seen the show)
As mentioned earlier, Turbo Teen, it could switch between racing & platforming!
Blackstar(kinda remember this one)
The Tick!
For real though, Transformers & GI Joe more then anything. Hell, I'd love a decent Beast Wars game! Batman TAS would've rocked, we almost got a platforming Batman, I hope we see a prototype of that someday. Justice League would've been great. Maybe a mashup with the Thundercats meeting up with the Silverhawks & Tigersharks! I'd personally like to see the 1st 3 TMNT games redone on the Turbo(especially if the 1st game could have 2 player added, & a lower difficulty).

Gatchaman aka battle of the planets:Sure it came out in the 70's but it was aired in the 80's for the u.s.
Another pick is uylesses 31,i liked how the show took greek mythology and mixed it up with sci-fi.

TRON: Love = Battle of the Planets (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
Spiral Zone would work for any genre (it would have to feature CD-ROM cinemas!), but I'm thinking Master Blaster -inspired game, but MUCH QUICKER PACE WHEN YOU ARE IN YOUR BADASS MOTORCYCLE-WHEEL THING.
Galaxy Rangers would be awesome as a Sunset Riders clone, but with creative new settings, character designs and STORY (the story should change based on decisions/paths you take in game)
C.O.P.S would be a brawler. Beat-em-up, but some RPG puzzle solving (solve a crime side quests) thrown in as total bonus. OF COURSE THERE WOULD BE BIONIC COMMANDO-ESQUE abilities for the main cop (he shoots a cabled handcuff/grappling hook from his forearm). Again, side-quests completely optional.
She Ra would be an awesome light gun game (on rails). You take on the role of a rebel gunslinger, but frequently you'd have to drop the gun and pick up the TurbPad for hand-to-hand melee (beat-em-up) and track-n-field-inspired mini-games. Supports VirtualCushion. She Ra would constantly bark orders ("Cover me as I run to the energy field, then set the timer on the bomb adjacent to the Cryot, and finally, before the bomb detonates, I'll cover you as you run through the minefield. Watch your step, and remember, Button II is for hurdling!") and you would have to re-play a level if you didn't earn her trust/respect. She ra's commands would be random (and multi-step...a sequence to follow), so you would have to pay attention and follow correct sequence.

Keep in mind that chances are the game would have been shite since nearly all licensed games were back then. Therefore, I would pick a show I hated, like Madballs or Rubik the Amazing Cube.
Amazingly, my favorite 80s cartoon, Macross, was made into a PC Engine game and even more miraculously, its actually decent. I do kinda wish a Gundam or Super Robot Wars game was made for PC Engine, but again, it almost certainly would have been garbage anyway so I'm not sure I care.
The Dragon Ball Z game did turn out pretty well though...right around 1993/1994 Bandai was transforming from a company that made almost nothing but unplayable garbage (lots of it) to the company they are today, possibly my favorite publisher, that actually makes quite a few great games now.

all the cartoon games that Japan made for PCE were good, at least.

Voltron. Could be a mix of shooter, platformer and fighting

M.A.S.K.?
What was the cartoon (or was it just toys), with the elemental holograms? They were small little bastards and the whole concept was a rock/paper/scissors type thing. Water > Fire > Earth

Battle Beasts?

Battle of the Planets and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors were two of my favourites back in the day. I could see BOTP easily being made into a video game.

Yup, Battle Beasts! I think I still have mine somewhere, probably boxed up with what's left of my M.U.S.C.L.E. figures! I don't recall a Battle Beasts cartoon though. In Japan, they were called BeastFormers, & were considered a spinoff of Transformers believe it or not!
Edit-found this on wiki: As part of the Takara strategy, many of the Battle Beasts appeared in the episode "Rebellion on Planet Beast" of the Japanese Transformers cartoon series Transformers: The Headmasters. The Battle Beasts reside on the planet Beest.
So I guess technically did have a cartoon appearance, but not one of their own, just a lone TF episode. I have Headmasters, but haven't watched it yet.

80's cartoons were often just vehicles to sell the toys, so it's easy to assume one had the other.

*Heads off to Amazon*
[EDIT] Man, the box-set looks sweet (DVD). What are the differences between the American and Japanese versions?
