Title: Overdrive by Titan, Extremely Impressive MD Demo
Post by: EvilEvoIX on August 20, 2013, 02:59:15 PM
I find this incredibly impressive. I hope they make some games using these FX and Music styles. Amazing after all these years this much effort is getting put into these ancient machines.
It's running at 50 HZ so more CPU time but also has 512 colors on screen at once. That is amazing trickery.

Nice demo, classic early 90s demo stuff. Pce can handle that as well :)
using most of that stuff ingame is a different rabbit hole tho.

Yeah I know, once you wish too interact with the new grafx stuff gets tricky. It's done at 50HZ to get more cycles from the CPU I doubt it can be done at a full 60HZ. Still very cool.

Sure it can be done at 60Hz.

I certainly hope so, it would be nice to have for us NTSC 60hz users. The folks over on Sega-16 seem to think that running it at PAL speeds allows more CPU cycles and wouldn't work at 60HZ, but what do I know ;)

Yeah, it doesn't work now, since it is not optimized to 60Hz (just watch at the dudes 50Hz PAL Mega Drive he uses). I guess if someone would properly adapt it to 60Hz, it also would work on the real 60Hz hardware. Speed could still be reduced to gain some more waits if really necessary.
IIRC this problem was alread present BITD, when very few of the PAL only optimized games caused troubles on the 60Hz machines due to the speed up etc.

Exactly. I challenged them to do a 60Hz version and even told the author via PM that I think he could do a 60Hz version if he really wanted to. But instead he keeps PMing me lots of swear words.

Lol, does he?

He does. No lie. Just got another about 3 minutes ago.

hahaha, post them in here.
So he will not gonna optimized it to the much better 60Hz machines?

I would but I feel that'd be rather dickish of me to post a private conversation to the public. But I will give one direct quote: "Something just CAN'T kick ass at 60hz, period." So no, it is not something he wishes to attempt.

Personally, I believe that this demo is, in fact, celebrating the little-known and very-much-unloved PCE HuCARD...Titan.
This is why, at the beginning of the demo, when the BRObot is pumping iron, we see the following message:
STATUS: BRObot is speaking the truth. Titan (PCE) sucks.

What is their reasoning for arguing that the 50hz machine being superior? Is there that much lost when speeding things up?

On consoles like the Genesis and NES, you can't really write to the PPU/VDC hardware while the screen is being drawn, so extra VBlank time is vital. Apparently, NTSC has 38 lines of VBlank, while PAL has over twice that at 88 lines. So, as with some NTSC-fixed C-64 demos, do you want the same effect at half the speed, or at half the resolution? :-?

Pretty neato even if it is useless in games, but too bad the creator seems to be a real twat.

One does not simply kick ass at 60hz. :-"

That's why people should make NTSC demos for consoles like that. Show what can be achieved under those restrictions. You're not really kicking more ass, as you're just using extra assets to achieve extra.

The Price is Right quality introduction with the cart being inserted was pointless, lol. Get a hot chick to wave her hands around and do that, or don't do it at all.
It would have been nicer if the floaty balls didn't clip through the big TITAN logo. Should've made them orbit around it so it didn't look as jarring.
and I would've liked to see the visual stuff do things that were more in-time with the tunes. That's my favorite part of demos.
Points were lost immediately due to the corny Xbox Live achievement at the end.
One of these days, someone should make a demo that DOESN'T have cheesy scroll text. I'm always tempted to do a demo just so the scroll text can say something interesting instead of like "HAY GUYZ THIS DEMO. THX 4 WATCHING. SHOUT OUT 2 MAI PEEPZ, YA HURD"

Awesome demo! It even had the Afterburner Balls!

You should do a demo which has a bouncing ball that bounces off of the edge of the screen and maybe onscreen objects along with slowly scrolling text at the bottom of the screen with the "greetz". Text should be wavy because you need to show that each letter is an indivual sprite. The BG needs a wavy, line scrolling version of your logo. Don't forget the heavily arped dance music. Then arrange all of the console's colors onscreen at once but arrange them in an unattractive way. They go away and it's BYE THX 4 WTCHIN. Then maybe China Warrior loads.
