So, I'm creating both a list of PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 Shoot-'Em-Ups categorized by their respective sub-genres, and I want to clarify which TurboGrafx-16 shoot-'em-ups are different enough from the PC Engine release to classify them as a different game - for example, IVANEC at The Brothers Duomazov (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/) says that Sinistron (TG-16) and Violent Soldier (PC Engine) (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Violent_Soldier.htm) are different enough, that he classifies them as completely different games (http://www.thebrothersduomazov.com/2011/10/measure-of-turbo-badass.html).
So, from the below list of 27 TG-16 shoot-'em-ups, when compared to their PC Engine release, which ones are different enough (gameplay-wise) to be able to classify them separately?
TurboGrafx-16 name Format Sub-genre PC Engine name
Aero Blasters Hu horizontal Aero Blasters
Air Zonk Hu horizontal PC Denjin: Punkic Cyborgs
Blazing Lazers Hu vertical Gunhed
Buster Bros. CD vertical static screen Pomping World / Pang

Magical Chase Hu horizontal Magical Chase
Monster Lair CD platformer hybrid Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Ordyne Hu horizontal Ordyne
Psychosis Hu horizontal Paranoia
R-Type Hu horizontal R-Type I & R-Type II
Raiden Hu vertical Raiden

Sinistron Hu horizontal Violent Soldier
Soldier Blade Hu vertical Soldier Blade
Space Harrier Hu into-the-screen Space Harrier
Super Air Zonk CD horizontal CD Denjin: Rockabilly Paradise

If I am missing any games from this list, then please inform me, so that I can update this list.

Psychosis/Paranoua also hsve different stage order.
Zonk/Denjin is almost as different as KC&KC/JJ&Jeff localization-wise.
Even more so for Magical Chase, which I'd count for sure.
BlaZing LaZers looks and plays the sane in-game, but is completely missing a license which was pretty much in name only. I believe that some tricks/modes only work in Gunhed.
Lords of Thunder plays the same, but is missing s lot of content.
I'd count R-Type.

Bardoly, this is a great follow-up/extension of http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=1922.0 !
I have been working on something using the info from the other thread, but I'm glad you posted this because I can incorporate the new info, now (I'll PM you).
ALSO: I'm including the "shooter-within-another game" info, too.

R-Type is interesting: not only is there the 2 separate JP HuCARDS --> 1 NA HuCARD (eliminating the password continue stuff...does anyone have screenshots of that? I'd love screenshots from R-Type 1 (displaying password/directions) and R-Tyoe 2 (input password).
What was the technical discussion (Covell!) about the screen resolution changing/flicker/sprites with R-Type1/2 (JP) vs R-Type Complete CD (JP) vs R-Type (NA)? why do I recall something about NA HuCARD possessing (theoretically?) the least amount of flicker?
R-Type Complete CD adds cinemas + RedBook soundtrack, eliminates password system...
Black_Tiger, I'd love to get the nitty gritty differences between the other games you listed. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
I LOV THIS SORT OF THING....the nuances between versions....

Not sure if you want to add this to the overall list when you make it but a special note to make might be in the case of Super Raiden (and side arms special?) which plays just diffrently enough and adds a couple of levels. perhaps note as remakes?

I think Raiden CD plays identical to HuCARD, but has two extra levels (Redbook, etc.)....
SideArms Special CD has TWO games: Original version (same as HuCARD, outside of RedBook) @@@and@@@ completely revamped "BC" mode w/ graphic and level design changes.
"Before Christ" mode deserves mention!

Then there's this: Daisenpuu Custom HuCARD superior to CD (http://tg-16.com/screenshot_comparisons.htm#Daisenpuu_Custom)

That's the first I've heard of this, what's the deal?

I spent quite a bit of time with both, right after each other, and to me while identical in enemies, background ect. your ship in super raiden is just the slightest bit of faster and more responsive. while the backgrounds in the hu version seems slightly more textured. But there was no real change in difficulty i could tell. WHile I wouldn't call it diffrent by any strech of the meaning I thought it might be interesting to note it as a remake wiht added levels.

"a lot" is an overstatement; the PCE version's shop keeper talks to you and its intro is narrated.

I recently compared the three versions. Off the top of my head, the title screen is missing the tombstone artwork and has a simple logo (unlike the Sega version's faithful logo), narration is also missing from the middle cinema and the pre-final boss speech lacks voice acting. Compared to other entries on this list and how much emphasis retro gamers place on voice acting being the big difference between CDs and carts, it's significant.
I wouldn't count Turbo HuCards that aren't different than PCE HuCards when a third CD version is also available. The Turbo/PCE versions are the same and the CD version is something else.
Gate of Thunder for Turbo has a cool new interactive intro and 3 major mini-games.
The Turbo version of R-Type runs in a narrower horizontal resolution to reduce flicker/break up.

Sinistron is easier difficulty wise than Violent soldier. Also the stage with the asteroids is much different.
