Title: Playing Ys 4 with english patch....FINALLY
Post by: pixeljunkie on March 30, 2006, 07:37:00 AM
I friggin LOVE this game!!!!!!!

Currently in Romun Castle...probably a little more than halfway through it. So great. I've played some of the newer remakes Ys 1 and 2 eternal...most of Oath in Felghana [stuck at the moment] and Ys 6 Ark of Napishtim on PS2 [which was really good], but THIS ONE has got me glued to the screen. Great art, awesome levels and great boss fights. So glad I am finally getting to play this. I just wish I knew what the hell they were saying in the voiceovers. :(

I'll be sad when this one is finished.

you could totally skip 3 in my opinion. 4 picks up where 2 leaves off anyway. 3 is kind of a side story almost, giving Adol something to do for a couple years. They are all good though....but if you are coming off of 1 and 2 and want the awesome level to continue up....move onto 4. 3 disappointed me when it came out. I appreciate it though. Oath In Felghana makes it right if you ever get a chance to play that.

I "tested"  the english patch so i played it for about 5 mins...the majority of the beginning is all speech ( and in japanese of course ) is it playable with only english text, or are you half lost?

Ys III sucks. There's no way around it. It sucks. Sorry.

Wow, I can't say I agree. I bought it the day it came out, and loved every minute of it. Considering SuperCD or Duo wasn't out at the time(in the US) and being that there was little content for the CDROM2 system, Ys III was a much welcomed addition to the TG16 CD library. I found it much more enjoyable than Final Zone 2 or Last Alert.

I played and beat the new Ys III remake for PC and its totally awesome. I've also beat Ys VI for PS2 - you can unlock the original japanese opening and dialog for the game (I think the music as well - can't remember).

Ys IV for SCD is my favorite though, of the series. Playing it again, but in english was dream come true - that's one dream scratched off my list :D

Dawn of Ys is easily my second favorite in the series, right after I & II (okay, so that kind of makes it my third favorite in the series :D ) .

By the way, Ys III is awesome.

Ys IV The Dawn of Ys isn't part of the story at all. It is not an "official" chapter of the series. If you want continuation, play the games in this order: Ys 1, 2, 4 (for SFC), 3/F, 5 and 6.

Ys The Oath in Felghana (F) is a remake of Ys III and it is very good -- but whatever you do -- DON'T skip YsIII. Nodtveidt is wrong, it doesn't suck. Well, the PCE version sucks, but the Mega Drive and PS2 versions are awesome.

Ys III for PCE is awesome, I find it better than the Genesis/Megadrive and SNES versions overall (my site goes better into detail, but of course that's not up :P ) . The only thing that is dissapointing in the PCE version is the extremely choppy parallax scrolling, but everything else is a step above the other console versions at the time, so I find it better all around. Not saying the Genesis/MD and SNES versions are bad, they are also great, just not quite as good (especially the SNES version). By the way, Adol having brown hair in the Genesis/MD version was bogus  .

Hey, I actually remember reading this comparision on your site! That must have been a long time ago.

Good god the parallax choppy scrolling of the background in TG-CD Ys III -- it would have been better just to have a few sprite clouds over a static background. It was so painful to see that.

Otherwise, I like all the Ys III console versions... but of course the TG-CD one is my fave :).

I never realized that Adol had brown hair! Did he really have brown hair, or do televisions make it look brown? That's too funny...

Check out the Ys animes - on the last disc you'll see a trailer for another Ys anime, but with characters from the PC-Engine version   edit: I mean from PCE Ys IV.

Anyway, I beat the Ys III for snes 2 times. I haven't played the genesis version much, but I'll have to go back and check it out. Both the MD/SNES version might have better scrolls, but the lack of awesome music scores them below the PCE version - anyday. The somewhat choppy scrolls were better then no scrolls in my opinion - atleast they were better than the Ninja Gaiden scrolls :P

There was one small part in the TGCD version of Ys III where the scrolling was excellent, but there might not've been any parallax in that scene so that's why. I believe it was in the back parts of the cave when you have to go back there again.

Now I'm really confused about which system I should play Ys 3 on. I've been holding out to get the TGCD version because I figured the music and cutscenes would be much better. But there are significant differences in the actual game between systems? Is the Mega Drive version actually better than the Super Nintendo version?

Just because people have a different opinion to yours does not make them biased.

For a lot of people, the music alone is enough to put the PCE version above all others, even with the crappy scrolling.

The Mega Drive version is much better than the SNES version. It is very close to the (ultimate) X68000 version.

The PS2 version rocks too.

How does the difficult compare? I found the SFC version much easier than the PCE version, with the exception of the final boss which is harder. Ive not played through the MD version to make a fair comparison.

But I actually believe most people here ARE biased towards the PCE version (even though they won't admit it) because they're PCE fans/grew up with the game. I'm not a big fan of any particular system, and I like every version of Ys III.

I've played the genesis version last night and can say the snes version is better IMO of the two. The genesis color is lacking in a few areas - the town is especially noticable, but I need to play it through to the end. But thats not saying much because without the awesome sound track, the game is just mediocore. Oh and don't forget the cinemas too. Matter of fact, if you think the old versions of Ys III games are great, it's probably because your biased towards the Ys series - I know I am :P

See, I've only played the console versions of games... I've never had a chance to play the versions that appeared on the various Japanese computer platforms. One of these days (hahahhaha... over the next 5-6 years, if I'm lucky), I am going to play them.

How do we know that you aren't just BIASED towards the Megadrive version, the console you more than likely grew up with out of the three? What you said about people here can be applied to you too only opposite :D .

Anyways, I never grew up with a TG16 and I didn't get into the system until all the way in 2002 and I had a Genesis back in the 16-bit generation, which I loved then and still do. I simply prefer the TGCD version of Ys III because overall it's better in all aspects:

Graphics - TGCD wins in the graphics department because the ingame details look nicer than both the Genesis and SNES versions and so does the actual color depth. The SNES version looked a little too "blurry" to me and the Genesis version looked a little too "dirty", (the map is probably the best example) though some parts looked pretty clean, like the opening part of the cave. Also to add to the graphics department, the TGCD version had way better cinematics than both versions ;) . Lets also not forget that the "Continue" screen in the TGCD version had a nice little piece of artwork in it of the three main characters. The only bad graphical part of the TGCD version was the parallax scrolling, which was down right terrible!

Sound - TGCD obviously due to the brilliantly arranged soundtrack by Ryo Yonemitsu. The Genesis verison had pretty good music too, and I don't even like the Genesis' sound chip for the most part too. I would have to play the SNES version again to remember, but I just remember it having the worst sound of the bunch.

Gameplay - The actual controls between the TGCD and Genesis version are identicle, but it's a little different in the SNES version since you had to perform slash in a different way (I think you had to hold down the attack button instead of just pressing down). The Genesis version however does offer a little more difficulty, whilst the SNES version is the easiest because you can level up so fast.

So out of the three main categories I judged the game in (Graphics, Sound, Gameplay), I gave the advantage of the TGCD version for a bold two of the categories and a tie for the gameplay. 2 and 1/2 out of 3 points makes the TGCD version a winner if you ask me, I'm sorry :) .

I hope to bring my site back so you all could see the actual article I wrote, I had descriptive paragraphs and nice screenshtos! In fact I just took screenshots of both the Genesis and Duo versions of Wonderboy 5/Dynastic Hero and I might have to make write an article for that later, which is even more fun because of how close they are.

Hey hey! Editing my post, are we? Trying to silence me, huh?

Anyway, I didn't grow up with a Mega Drive. Nor any particular version of Ys III.

The first version of Ys III I played was the SNES version. I loved it. A few months later I got the Mega Drive version and I loved it even more. Another few months later I played the PCE version at a friend's place. I didn't like it much at all.  :P

I just got up, I can't think of anything else to say.

Shit, Seldane sorry about the post edit! Last night when I was typing my post, I accidently hit the "Edit Post" button by your name. I was trying to find your original post but I can't find it anywhere, so I guess it got deleted :( . Maybe there is a way I can add it again, do you remember what your original post said? Sorry again!

I love Ys III, mainly because I love platform RPGs and Ys. I do think Ys III was very different from the original Ys I and Ys II though, and I'm not just saying that because of the 180 degree turn in the gameplay, but it's story just didn't feel nearly the same as I & II, which was an amazing epic. I still love Ys III though :) .

You and anybody else that's ever had difficulty ripping a PC-Engine/TG-16 CD will have a nifty tool at your disposal very soon. I'm working on a program tentatively called "TurboRip" and I'm about to release version 1.00 very soon. It will probably be my last gift to the PCE community, although if it becomes popular enough, I might return to it someday to make a GUI version (this will be commandline). For a long description, I made a post about it here (http://forums.magicengine.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=1513) if anyone wants to take a look. Basically, TurboRip will rip all PC-Engine/TG-16 CD discs perfectly to an ISO/WAV/CUE image format which among other things will allow easy patching in the case of Xak III or Ys IV. I have options to prepare the image for use on Sony's PSP even as one of its many extra pluses! So with an ISO/WAV/CUE image, you can then burn that using whatever burning software works best with your system, whether it's Alcohol 120%, Ahead Nero, CDRWIN, Fireburner, or CloneCD, etc. All of those support the CUE format well enough.

Anyway, I'll make a post on this forum to let you guys know when it's ready. Keep on the lookout for that announcement which should be imminent. I wanna get as many people testing it with original PC-Engine discs to see how my CD-ROM devices it supports. You can inform me if you have trouble and it might be possible to see about fixing some issue. I have Squaresoft74 and Dave Shadoff testing it for me as we speak, and I've fixed quite a few issues already. Among some of the features are being able to detect and read from an external CD-ROM device connected to your system via Firewire or USB.

Here're two screenshots of it in action using an original disc of Cosmic Fantasy 2:

It will account for PREGAPs when it comes to track type transitions, which is what causes trouble with such Mixed-Mode discs if you try to dump them on a track by track basis. One of the main reasons I wanted to create such a program was because if the dubs for Ys IV were ever finished, you would need the image in ISO/WAV/CUE form, and you would just need to replace the Japanese wave files with the English ones I would provide. It's easy enough to dump an image to BIN/CUE, but such a format is not suitable for patching the waves within it. It also results in varying sizes whereas in this case, every data track is correctly dumped to the same size on EVERYONE's PC, so there wouldn't be any inconsistencies say if you wanna patch a particular data track.

Anyway, that's the gist of it. I talked about it more here (http://forums.magicengine.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=1513) as I mentioned, if you wanna learn more details about it. It works on one of Squaresoft's DVD-RW devices, but not the other, so I've delayed releasing it in the hopes I can make it more compatible. Plus I have to finish the ReadMe. Your drive basically must be modern (later than 1996 preferably), and support the MMC-1 standard. Its compatibility with CD/DVD readers will be as good if not better than David Michel's MagicEngine. It will also extract its own ASPI layer and use that by default, but you can provide a parameter to force it to load the usual WNAPSI32.dll provided by Adaptec or Nero, if your system operates better with that layer. Also, the MP3 encoding is done using the latest copy of the LAME MP3 encoder if you use an option that requests MP3 audio extraction.

Yeah, I agree with that. Turbo CD wins. I played the SNES version and I would've expected much better graphics for a SNES cart compared to Turbo CD, but they're almost the same. And so then when you take the Turbo CD's cinemas, awesome soundtracks, etc. into account, it's enough to place it above the other ports in my book. Oh, yeah, good job on being an Ys nerd. You actually went and wrote a review comparing them side by side. ;) Even I couldn't do that...

Yeah, in fact, pcerip was one of my inspirations for this. As was cddissect, but they all fall short. pcerip only does data tracks.... Well, thanks a bunch, but if you know how to rip data, you know how to rip audio, so why not have had that too? Cddissect was closer to what I wanted, but yet another obstacle to getting wave output! It was built for a specific purpose to create a ISO/MP3/CUE file set only for use for the HUGO-X emulator on an XBOX. It did not have an option to extract the wave directly. It only outputs MP3s... I was thinking of asking the author for his source code, but I just decided not to and when I got the motivation again to work on this, I did the research and probably wouldn't have made as good a tool had someone else's source code been handed to me. Not that it would've impeded me, but it could've sent me in another direction rather than the one where I did most of the research for MMC/SCSI/ASPI myself, so now I know more of what's going on with regards to communicating with CD/DVD devices having to stumble through it.

The only good thing that'll be left of pcerip when this is released is its name which I kind of wanted. ;) I was thinking of going with "PowerRip" or something, but I wanted some reference to the game system/platform in the name, so it was either go with "turborip," "tg16rip," or even "necrip." Heh.

Anyway, I gave Keranu a copy to test for me, and I spent some 6 hours with Squaresoft74 fixing some final bugs. It works for him entirely now on all drives, so I'm confident in making the first public release after some touch ups and a ReadMe. It won't be long now.

I've gone public with it if you haven't yet noticed. Check this thread (http://nick.serveblog.net/forums/index.php?topic=69.0) for details. Lemme know if it works on the CDROM you're referring to where pcerip does not.
