Title: Never Played NES
Post by: sunteam_paul on October 13, 2013, 02:51:07 AM
I've started a new video series, playing NES games (badly) for the first time and commenting on them. I've never really played the NES much so this is a new adventure for me.

Never Played NES #1 - Tiger Heli (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fJ2EzOJl1g#)

Status: DISBELIEF.

Do you mean your experience is primarily with the Famicom, as opposed to NES?

OR DO YOU MEAN YOU KNOW NOT OF FAMICOM??

Disbelief.

It does seem a bit odd to be a video game fan and not play the most prolific system of the era.  How do you know something is the best, without trying the other stuff?

I can't wait until you come to the conclusion the NES is your favorite system and you disown all others...

Remember that the NES didn't do the business in the UK that it did overseas. The Master System (with its superior graphics) was by far the more successful console at the time - I never even knew anyone who owned a NES. It just wasn't a big deal over here as it was in America where it seemed that 1 in 5 people owned one, much like how the Spectrum never made the dent in the US that it did in Europe where it was the No.1 home computer (and you're missing out if you've never played classics like Ant Attack, 3D Death Chase, Wheelie and The Train Game).

I went from Spectrum to SMS, to PCE, Amiga, Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation, PC...etc. Classic DOS games are also a field I'm missing out on. I've dabbled briefly in a few NES roms in the past, but never properly tried to play them, it's going to be interesting.

Great first episode!  I'm sure you figured this out, but with Tiger Heli, if you are hit *and* you have a bomb on that side of the heli, the bomb will go off, preventing you from being destroyed and kills everything nearby.

I also never had an NES bitd, but picked this one up a few years ago and think it's pretty good!  Kyukyoku Tiger was released on the NES as Twin Cobra, and it's also a very fun port.  Much easier than the PCE version because when you die, your heli instantly reappears - no break in gameplay.  For an NES game, it's pretty fun.

back then the NES (Nintendo in general) was much bigger than anything else in switzerland, but it still had a fair amount of SMS. as for video game consoles, prior the NES/SMS we only knew the 2600 and G&Ws i guess. vic20, c64 etc. was very strong in the home computer section because everybody could copy the games (yeah, nobody thougt bad about this back in the 80s).
i also got me a lynx in about 1989. we had a lot of official TV stores that just imported game devices from any countries, since there was no law or what so ever against doing that.
so we could basically walk into few stores and play the SFC just few days after its japanese lauch.
they hals had PC Engines (remember the core 1) when i was 13~14.

unfortunately the prices were ranged THAT high for these gaming machines, you had to be a very rich or wealthy kid to get any private hands on them.

Ark, you know I love you. However...

You are crazy. NES Double Dragon is awesome, a superior game to the arcade. ALL of the Double Dragon games are flawed (arcade and ports), in one respect or another, but DD and DDII on NES were oozing with charm, challenge and here's the most important thing (replayability): PROVIDED COUNTLESS HOURS OF FUN. I kept going back to these games, as did my friends, far more frequently than any other versions/ports available. Personally, I like the leveling-up system implemented in DD...earning experience and developing skills to acquire new moves totally works for the NES port.

DD on SMS, for all its virtues, never achieved the same level of charm/intrigue/satisfaction/replayability.

I love the SMS and will always defend it, but the Famicom/NES library is ridiculously rich and varied. It is my favorite console because of the vast, solid library of games.

I have a long list of all these suggestions so keep them coming.

I've already recorded a few more videos and I find that the best ones are games that are action based and quite challenging, without being difficult to work out how to play. I've done a couple I might trash because they just go on too long with me being either clueless or running out of things to say.

Also, here (http://www.retrovideogamer.co.uk/index.php?topic=2291.0)'s an interesting thread if you Americanese people want to get a flavour of the impact of the NES in the UK (i.e. it bombed).

You've never played NES, huh? You're in for a treat! Here's a few suggestions of games that are excellent (IMO) that are not talked about too much:

Adventures of Lolo - A unique puzzle game series by HAL. Known as the Eggerland series in Japan.

Power Blade - A fun, often overlooked action game. Not to be confused with Power Blazer, the much-inferior Japanese version.

Blaster Master - A unique take on the MetroidVania genre.

Goonies II - Another decent (but strange) MetroidVania based on the classic movie from the '80s.

River City Ransom/Street Gangs - A Beat 'em up/RPG with tons of personality.

I have also never had a NES. In fact I don't think the NES was ever released in South Africa where I grew up. I can remember a rich friend had one as his father had managed to import one somehow and I did play it a few times when I visited his house.

Is it generally cheaper to collect PAL titles or NTSC titles? And which version of the hardware should one get?
Title: Re: Never Played NES
Post by: Tatsujin on October 14, 2013, 01:48:26 PM
why in the hell would one possibly like to collect PAL games for the NES?

And since you seem to be located in japan(?), certainly non of the above
Title: Re: Never Played NES
Post by: cho_aniki on October 14, 2013, 01:58:53 PM
I play a lot of my consoles in PAL format and being from South Africa I have a large PAL collection. Having said that, I don't even have a PAL Turbografx. It really depends on the console, for some like the Megadrive I have a lot of both.

One of the huge advantages of many PAL consoles, for me anyhow, is the Peritel/Scart connection which means getting the best possible picture without having to do any modifications.

As far as the NES is concerned, I don't really know which is why I was asking.

so then you're not located in japan as implied in the otehr thread?

euro scart wouldn't do much good on NTSC-J ground anywhy.

you can hook up almost any console via scart, having the appropriate cable. this wasn't exactly a feature of the PAL console itself, but much more of the TV sets sold in PAL fields which preferably supported RGB input more than in the US/JPN fields.
(btw. there were no PAL consoles sold, which came with a scart cable ex-works. if you wanted to use RGB, you had to buy your cable somewhere else).

And yeah, the NES only had AV at best anyway. so no difference there, except that PAL did run like 17% slower and came with huge PAL-bars on the top and bottom.

I am living in Japan but I am from South Africa and have most of my games collection with me here.

I use multi-region CRT televisions for playing my games so I am not stuck with NTSC-J at all.

Most French consoles (technically SECAM) came with a Peritel cable and some output RGB directly (Atari 7800 and Sega Master System for example). The difference in quality is huge when compared with the RF output of the consoles which were sold elsewhere. In this case, it is not simply a question of switching the cable as the consoles sold elsewhere do not output RGB despite being from the same region (ex. UK Atari 7800 and UK Sega Master System). This is why I tend to only use French consoles for playing those systems. Of course the more modern the console, the easier it is to get around this.

But if the NES only outputs AV, then as you say, it makes no difference. My question was more in relation to the games themselves and in which region they would be cheaper to acquire.

yeah. but as stated above, those where already modified/beefed up consoles and not original off the shelf ware from nintendo, sega, NEC & co.

and i don't know about the 7800 (never had one), but the SMS 1 had standard RGB output everywere, and so did the mega drive and any major console from the PSX era upwards. all you had to do was to purchase a extra RGB cable.

and also as stated above already, without any hardware modification, PAL games (unless they were properly ported, which was almost never the case) would run ca. 17% slower than their NTSC counterparts and also featuring huge PAL bars (about 100 lines -> 625 lines PAL (visible 576) vs. 525 lines NTSC (visible 483)) on the top and bottom screen, which was always a huge minus in my eyes.

My question was more in relation to the games themselves and in which region they would be cheaper to acquire.

and again, since you're located in japan, nothing would be cheaper than aquiring japanese (famicom) games (except for few very expensive rarities)

also PAL games can be quite pricey at these days, since many of those hipsters jumped on the retro train for descovering their youth a 2nd time.

Karnov is under-appreciated. I consider it a gem.

A lot of folks disagree, but Cobra Command (no! Not the game you are thinking of! A different one) is a brutal game that I absolutely adore. It's Choplifter done better, but I'll warn you, it is challenging (I love it).

There are too many top-tier games for you to play, but when you get a chance, take a break from them and try Karnov and/or Cobra Command.

It could have been a masterpiece, for me, because I actually liked all the genres combined (and they were well-executed by Konami...the light gun stuff was tough with a controller (aiming quickly), but I did it routinely...with an actual light gun, also passable...but actually getting off a slew of shots quickly was the challenge. So, a nice challenge for both controllers.

Anyway, the beat-em-up sections should have been far more fun and less TEDIOUS.

I got to the last boss many times and still remember the anguish, as a kid, of dying when I was a kick or three away from beating the damn game.

Always question the source of information.

SOURCE: Esteban.

THEREFORE: Be wary.

Seriously, I can't remember why I altered that little bit of the comic's cover. It probably was tangentially related to a thread at pcefx 7 years ago. Seriously.

Bayou Billy is one of my favorite NES games ever.

Mad City is easier because the guys go down in less hits, and the driving stages don't have turns in them, so you don't plow into shit as much.

the downside?  Annabelle's tits aren't popping out of a skanky gatorbait shirt.

She's got a dress on.

Screw that.

The second scene right before the shooting stage where she's hanging by the ropes, she's got some lame ass dress on.

In the NES one, she's basically got on an outfit like whats her tits from Gatorbait.

No, I've not had the chance yet. There are a few games that I'd like to go back and put some time into, that's what's so nice about doing this series because I find some previously unknown-to-me gems.

Thirded! Guardian Legend is excellent, and yet quite underrated. Definitely worth your time if you like Zelda style games and shooters, and this is possibly the only game ever to mix the two.

It's also made by Compile. Everyone loves Compile. If you don't love Compile, you have no soul.

Ha! I haven't played much of this myself. I dunno, it never seemed to get much attention, just keeps staying off my radar.

We must rectify this situation. I have a heavily worn HuCARD that (hopefully) still works. Heavily worn = it spent the day on a busy road, constantly under a car or truck tire.

You might be surprised, but the NES release of Kiwi Kraze was the ONLY console version of NZS to come to North America.  Of course, there were C-64 and Amiga versions, but again consoles ruled the roost.  Typically if I see a game like NZS or Rainbow Islands on a person's "best games ever" list, I can peg them as a Brit from a mile away.

The convenience store near my Jr. High school had NZS and Rastan Saga II, which is where I first learnt about both games, and I bet most people in the US or Canada remember NZS in the arcades first, and perhaps as an import second.

It's also easy to answer why NES Kiwi Kraze is more fun than the PCE version: the PCE NZS has sub-NES music quality.

Ah, Batman! An excellent choice! The video was excellent as well. I remember the first time I played this game, the only games I was really familiar with were Mario and Sonic, so I kept trying to kill the enemies by jumping on their heads.

It's good to see you play a real classic. I can only assume that playing lesser games for a while could burn you out, so it's good to mix it up a bit. That Race America game and some of your other choices looked awful.

WOW.  :)  Never played the NES huh?  Go for Dragon Warrior!!!

Indeed, all four are just amazing. I'll throw in a few recommendations (I own an NES with almost 200 carts myself, the console is one of my favorites)

-Dragon Warrior I-IV
-Final Fantasy
-Crystalis
-Super Mario Bros. 1-3
-The Guardian Legend
-Life Force
-Gradius
-Faxanadu
-Double Dragon II
-The Mafat Conspiracy
-The Legend of Zelda/Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
-Mega Man 1-6
-Adventures of Lolo 1-3
-Kirby's Adventure
-Castlevania 1-3 (you might find the second to be a little odd or meh, I personally enjoyed it)
-Batman & Batman: Return of the Joker
-Blaster Master
-Journey to Silius
-1943
-Bobble Bobble
-Solomon's Key & Fire N' Ice
-DuckTales
-Gargoyle's Quest II
-Goonies II
-Bionic Commando
-Metroid
-Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
-Ninja Gaiden 1-3
-Kabuki Quantum Fighter
-Power Blade 1&2
-Solstice (hard as f*ck but an enjoyable experience)
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II and III
-Willow (Zelda-like RPG based off the movie, very well done IMO)
-Tetris (Tengen Tetris is better but there's nothing more 'classic' than Nintendo's)
-The Ultima games

If you are interested in collecting repro carts, which I'm not against myself as I have a few for the SNES (Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu 3), I'll throw a few names out for you:

-Sweet Home
-Ys I, II and III
-Dragon Slayer Jr. Romancia; if you like a good challenge
-Mother/Earthbound Zero
-Parodius
-Ufouria
-Moon Crystal
-Glory of Hercales II
-Holy Diver
-Esper Dream 1 and/or 2

All that should definitely get you started, I know there's a few I left out, it's a console that's good for discovering things on your own for the most part ;) I know that there's several that others could recommend too.

I spent HOURS playing SorD2 hallfpipe alone. That thing is excellent once you get a hang of the controls.
The story is not bad either, again, once you take a few to get acclimated.

I agree 100% with this. I bought this game from a local department store back when I was 10 (since it was only $20). The story mode controls kinda suck but the half pipe was fun as hell (despite the learning curve). I love the animation when you dropped head first on the small middle ramp and you split in half :)

Legacy of the Wizard is great once you realize each character does one thing that the other gooners can't, so you have to figure out who can go where and grab what.

Moon Crystal is a very good game, with good music, great graphics, and gameplay (as you discovered) like a cross between PoP and Ys III (later stages include a castle to explore, etc).  Better get used to the controls, as in later stages you'll have to jump on moving platforms, gears, etc, as I recall.

I can't wait until you come to the conclusion the NES is your favorite system and you disown all others...

All you do is travel between the two ports looking for Jaws and collecting sea shells. Once you find Jaws and wear his health down you enter the final sequence where you ram the filthy fish with your boat, which is easier said then done.

Jaws wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Yeah the last part was a tad hard, but I mean come on, I beat the game when I was like 12. If it was really that hard I'd not have been able to do so. I think the main part of Jaws that is the problem is it is not that long. There just is not enough content in the game.

No, with variety of challenges/objectives (in shootemup scenes) and a nice overworld quest getting items...I actually like the flow of the game. The shootemup stages underwater should have had different objectives and goals (kill x fish, plant x lobster traps, rebait x hooks, dodge swarm of barracuda for x seconds, escort a baby seahorse to mommy seahorse across the screen, have scrolling full-on horizontal/vertical shooting stages, have mini-boss encounters, etc.)

I meant as it is. It obviously could have been spruced up to be a good retro-style NES game. I don't think that was within LJN's capability, though.

That's some very surprising info to me. Jaws never seemed so bad as people say, just a bit too short and simple. It seems its gameplay mechanics were more akin to a 2600 game (not that they are bad, just simpler than what Nes games could have allowed to do).

All loose for $5 a game

Legendary wings
Hogans Ally (already had but it was $5 and in better condition then my old one)
Kickle cubical
Jackle
Journey into Sillious
Shadow gate
Monster party
Thundercade (the cover art looked like G.I. Joe from the 80s had to try it out lol. Plus it was a "Sammy" game which I typically like.

Also got Kickmaster for $45. Kind of pricy for a NES game  but meh. Let's go crazy.

It was?  I am blissfully unaware of some of the more pricy NES games apart from you little damsons and flint stones dinosore peek level stupid asking prices.

Unfortunately I think all I have left to pick up on the NES on my want list are the pricyer games.

I think the only "cheap" BES games still on the list is Mike Tysons Punch out, base wars, power blade, adventure island III, and uninvited.

The rest

Little Samson
Rescue Rangers 2
Bonk (shitty conspired to the Tg-16 and not a desperate need for anything over $10)
Power Blade 2
Fire n ice
Krion Conquest
Bubble Bobble 2
Both flintstone games
Mighty Final Fight
Panic Resturant

I think that's it.

I never did properly beat the game.  I used the old password hack changing the first 2 letters FE or EF to get powerful boost so I could do all 7 bells and finish it.  I really need to do this proper one day, exploring various hidden dungeons and buying powerups the slow way.
