Magical Chase or Cotton which game is better?
I do rate Cotton, it's an excellent game but I think Magical Chase just beats it so gets my vote.
-
Magical Chase has more pleasing graphics, tighter game play, there isn't the wasted "hold to charge" mechanic in Cotton, it has a fun upgrade system, and is just better.
Cotton is a little overrated in my opinion, I don't care much for the game.
-
I don't particularly care much for either, but I find Cotton slightly more appealing for some reason.
-
Cotton. MC is good fun, but Cotton is just a far more entertaining game.
-
I only own Cotton, and while I really enjoy it, Magical Chase (via flashcard) seems much easier. I'm a sucker for a shooter I can beat, so MC gets my vote. :D
-
Please send me both games and I will promptly report my findings.
-
The sprite taxing in Cotton makes it #2 to the Chase.
-
It's a tough choice, as they're both good games. Magical Chase is bright and colorful, easier (good for a shewty weenie like me), and has the better weapon system; while Cotton is more dark and moody, more challenging, sports funny cutscenes, and has nice big bosses to whack; I guess I'll go with Cotton since it offers more replay value in the difficulty and ain't so easy to blast through right off the bat.
-
cotton sure is the perfect halloween game..hehe :)
but for me it's MC all the way.
-
Ive always found Cotton to be unique, not quite a serious shooter like gate of thunder, thunderforce etc, but not quite a cutemup, just compare it to the snes version of cotton.
cotton has more diversity in its back grounds, MC the level will look the same at the start of the level as it will at the end of the level, Cotton has larger sprites and far superior animation, cotton has some of the most beautiful hand drawn animated fx of its time, 2nd only to rondo on the system in my opinion, they both have the same amount of colors on the first level, just over 100.
Superior sound fx, CD quality music and cutscenes, on a tech level magical chase is not in the same league.
I do have a hard time choosing which one I like better as far as gameplay goes though, but with all the above mentioned I went with cotton.
-
I picked Cotton, because it's more unique/interesting. Magical Chase is a bit of a throwaway game.
Even if it were as common as like, Ordyne or some shit, I don't think it'd be that great of a game. Once you get past the cutesy graphics, the levels are kind of boring, and the gameplay isn't really anything to get hard for.
You can get a fairly similar experience from a handful of other games. It almost just feels like a less charming Fantasy Zone or something.
Cotton on the other hand, you have that sense of travel/adventure while you zip around the levels. It's just a better put together game, I think.
I think most of Magical Chase's appeal comes from the parallax effects that distract you from an otherwise boring game.
-
Cotton for me, Sunsoft Music, that driving bass of a Model 1 MD, the epic boss battles, it seems to me a much more serious game.

cum'on boy, wrong system fail here.
-
I think Cotton is more of a shooter fans kind of shooter. It has a lot more content than Magical Chase, the music is stellar.
I think Magical Chase is more of a casual gamers shooter, it's more of a cute em up, it's easy to play through, it's short and is more accessible of a game overall.
-
In the end the main difference between them is that Cotton is a decent port of a badass arcade game. While MC clearly has the "console shooter" feel.

+1
-
thats excatly what made me vote for MC. it's not part of one of the 100s conversions of an already existing game, but a 100% original PCE/TG game (omitting the later released PC and GBC ports).
-
Magical Chase was in front at first with the votes but now Cotton has taken the lead!
-
I like Cotton but Magical Chase has a nice balance to it since you can fire in multiple directions off the bat and the visuals just look a bit more colourful.
-
Cotton, Because it lets you ask people if "they are on the cotton".
Wait What?
-
So looks like cotton is the winner, I'm suprised I thought Magical Chase would have won.
-
48% vs 52% with a margin of error of 4% is *ahem* hardly a mandate.

You never know when a single vote can turn the tide...
What is the latest tally?

Regardless of polls Cotton is the winner.

Regardless of polls Cotton is the winner.
If you judge games based solely on superior tech and not on gameplay, you might as well come play some Xbox One with me.

??? I am judging on gameplay. I've 1'cc EVERY version of Cotton. And I can still play it for fun. Magical Chase is a game I play once a year or so. It's fun, but doesn't have the "OMG PLAY ME NOW VACUMM" effect that Cotton has.
-
Magical Chase doesn't have as much scaling and rotation and Cotton will always play better thanks to the model 2 Saturn pad.

you lost me there??? we're talking about the PC Engine version here.
:D

Wait is this a test? If so I failed cause I voted Override.

Yeah right, the PC Engine could never handle Cotton Boomerang, let alone the original game.

He's talking about the fact that you're talking about a SEGA SATURN controller, and presumably, the Sega Saturn version of Cotton....
in a TG thread where we are talking MC vs Cotton for TG.
-
Not to mention the fact that Cotton 1 isn't even on Saturn....
Series outline for the n00bs:
1. Cotton: System 16B, PCE, PS1, NeoGeo Pocket Color
2. Cotton X68K: X68000, this is based on Cotton 1, but it has a lot of changes including totally redrawn sprites, tons of added parallax and new backgrounds, plus exclusive bosses. More of a "Cotton: Turbo."
3. Cotton 2: ST-V, Saturn
4. Cotton Boomerang: ST-V Saturn (This is Cotton 2: Turbo essentially)
5. Panorama Cotton: MD
6. Cotton 100%: SFC, PS1
7. Rainbow Cotton: DC
8. CR Cotton: PS2 (Pachinko game)

also there was a..
cotton 2 for windows95/98 in 1998
a cotton for S! Appli in 2007
a superlite1500 original cotton for PS3/PSP in 2007
and a superlite1500 cotton100% for PS3/PSP in 2007
:P
-
SuperLite 1500 would be one of the japanese "Simple" series?
-
I was under the impression the "PS3 and PSP" games were just the PS1 version via digital download, did they actually get real phyiscal releases?
Also it should be noted the PS1/PS3/PSP (they are all the same thing really) ports of Cotton 1 is a bit different from the arcade. They removed the 2nd loop completely, making the game much easier to clear, and oddly they actually changed a few of the magic attacks, they used some of the PS1's particle effects and look different to the 16B original. And oddly they did add a new difficulty option that adds suicide bullets. The music also doesn't sound quite right to my ears. Been a while since I've heard them both back to back though.
The PCE port is a very good port. Some colors were lost, and the fancier background effects were toned down, but gameplay is 99% the same as the 16B. It's slightly easier due to the dragon boss having a total safe spot, if you can make it that far. The arranged music is truly fantastic as well.
The X68K version is absolutely insane, but it's best appreciated if one has already 1cc'd the 16B/PCE versions.
