Title: Halloween Games
Post by: roflmao on October 26, 2013, 06:33:29 PM
I'm pretty sure there is a TG/PCE specific Halloween gaming thread already floating around, but I want to know what all of your Halloween gaming habits tend to be.

I know a few members have mentioned Silent Hill as a creepy game (I haven't played any of 'em yet), but this Saturday my son and I decided to have a gaming day devoted to "Scary Games" so we played Castlevania: SotN and Aria of Sorrow (via Gamecube) and Plants vs Zombies on my wife's Kindle.  I *so* wanted to break out Rondo for the PCE, but it just never came to be. (And frankly, that's ok because I think I'm scarier than anything in the game when I get pissed off losing at it!)

So what are some games you love do play (obey or not) around this haunting holiday?

While not a game I play at Halloween or anything, on the TG-16, Silent Debuggers has made me jump in the past. Aliens shrieking and popping in front of my FOV, and such.

Samurai Ghost totally has the horror vibe (granted, it is more subtle than Splatterhouse)...

It is a challenging game, however, and young folks/adults with no skills will become frustrated.

Ill usually play things like Cotton and Dracula X.

Interesting "tradition" for me around Halloween...  Every year around Halloween I pull out my old Atari 800 a mess around with it for a few days.  Thats usually all the entertainment its worth.  But it is strange how I always do it the same time every year.

i decided to play the Resident Evil on 3DS.  It is an OK game but not very scary I should have picked something else.

There are a few scary moments though. The time I jumped the worse was when I thought my AI teammate came through the door into the room w/ me and when I went to exit the room he rushed through and scared the heck out of me.

Yeah that is the one, i haven't played 6 my usual co-op guy is MIA so i put that on the back burner but i heard it was bad.

This one is OK the environments are interesting but since you have a partner and don't really worry about ammo it is more like 5 which i liked than any of the other ones which were outstanding.  It is also fairly linear.

I'd say just wait for a 10-15$ sale on the console/pc version and give it a shot.

I just picked up Ghost Manor for a $29 BIN shipped free.  Hoping it gets here by Thursday, I've never played it.  (not expecting much).

Also, let's not leave out...

Black_Tiger helped me give this game a fifteenth chance and it has grown on me.

However, it can be quite frustrating at times. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

Temcos Deception for the PS1. That game rules. I'm surprised that noone mentioned Ghouls N Ghosts or Ghost House for the Master System. Other honorable mentions The Gargolyes quest series.

Haunted House for the 2600 will scare your pants off.

Oh, Hexen too.

I came back in here to say Haunted House and Ghost Manor.  I'm sure there are a few others on Atari, but a lot of great games have been mentioned already.

I just thought of a funny one that used to scare me when I was little.  Tunnel Runner for 2600.  When the music changed from calming to creepy and that big face came after you.

Edited: to mention another game that used to scare me with a music change when I played late at night, but definitely not scary  Fairy Tale Adventure for Genesis.  It was very calming exploring the countryside and as soon as enemies were coming they played a loud guitar rift type of sound.

And a game for this gen that I thought was really scary and two more randoms

Condemned Criminal Origins (XBOX360)
Dracula Unleashed (Sega CD)
Dracula Undead (Lynx)

Anyone doing this again?  I normally play spooky stuff around Halloween if I can.

Already played through the Bunker which was a fun (if short) FMV romp.  Working through The Evil Within for the first time now.

Its an old game(for a newer console) but the Condemned:Criminal Origins series is damn creepy. One level that always made me paranoid was the level where you are trapped in an abandoned clothing department store. There are old creepy mannequins everywhere... some move on you and some are enemies. You never knew which ones were gonna attack you. Drove me batty in that level :-P

Proud owner of a 1060 GTX now, so I am gonna run through RE7 again on my PC (I previously played through on my buddies PS4).  Some other games I have on PC that I couldn't run before that fit the bill are Dead Rising 3 and Evil Within (1).  I'll just see how I feel with my crumbs of free time...

I’m going to play some “eerie” games:
Alone in the Dark (3DO)
7th Guest (PC)
Dracula Unleashed (DVD game)

I haven’t played these games since they were originally released.

I’ll try to squeeze SPLATTERHOUSE in there, too, since my kids will love its theme.

Last October, my girlfriend and I played through all the 8 and 16 bit Castlevanias and finished it up with Symphony.  This year we're trying to beat Cotton, Cotton 2, Magical Chase, and Death Smiles.  Next year we'll likely play the Resident Evil series.

I have fond memories of playing through Quest for Glory 4 every October while I was in junior high and high school.  If you've never played it and like point and click adventures I give it my highest recommendation.

I do this every year. Mainly in the retro arena.

I started early, about three weeks ago. So far I've played:

Castlevania 1&3
Castlevania Bloodlines
Castlevania Chronicles
Monster Party
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Ghosts and goblins
Ghouls and ghosts
Sweet Home

On the list:

Splatterhouse
Dracula x
Uninvited
Shadowgate
Friday the 13th

Sweet home is a damn hard game. I haven't gotten very far. The constraint of splitting your party, and juggling items is very challenging. And WTF is up with the wood!? Always need wood, always falling through it... Ugh!

It's not surprising this game didn't come to the states. It tries my patience as an adult. I would not have suffered this game as a child.

I would like to play some newer things too. I started the evil within last year and never went back to it, so I may start it over. I may bust out the Silent Hill HD collection too. New games just take so much time though.

"Old man Stauf built a house and filled it with his toys.....6 guests were invited one night, their screams...the only noise"

That game freaked me out when it was released. I think i was 9 or 10. Those graphics were insane for the time.

Yes, I played the PC version, too, but I played...hmmm...maybe 50-60% of the 3DO version when I picked up my 3DO many moons ago.

The 3DO version has flaws and awkward controls...but I can’t remember if the original was that much better (ha!).

Probably about the same, it's hard to dial in the CPU speed perfectly in DOSBox and this causes issues with aiming and being able to run but I think I also had these issues on the hardware the game was meant for back in the day, just not as much.

Was pretty surprised by part 2 as a kid, both for the fact that the Egghead Software employee somehow wasn't able to talk my mom out of buying it for me and then by some of the content while playing it. Pretty sure they went a little further than sideboob in that one.

Sanitarium and the first Amnesia on the PC are really good games for this time of year. Sanitarium is one of those little known games that turns out to be a real gem. Amnesia was the only "horror" game that ever really made me scared to play it in the dark. I remember the first time playing it. Rounded the corner of a hallway and ran face first into a monster. At that very moment my cat jumped up on the entertainment center knocking a picture to the ground behind me. Scared me so bad that I nearly pissed myself. Good times, great games.
