Since I've thus far been sticking to my goal of having fairly regular content updates at DoxPhile (http://doxphile.com/), I wanted to make a thread dedicated to informing interested parties of new content/features since the old thread was more of a "look at me, i'm here and giving stuff away" type deal.

Anyone remember the US releases of TV Sports Compilation CD, Super Sagaia, Super Star Soldier II, TV Sports Baseball, Lode Runner '92, Star Parody, Sports Festival, F-1 Circus, Double Dragon II, and Ninja Warriors? Me either! That's why Turbo Play #12 makes me oh so sad, but there was one letter from a reader that cheered me right up. Anyone care to guess which one?
The letter about Champions Forever Boxing. I didn't know about the goofed up copies of this game. I wonder which versions are messed up and it they are in any way related to the colour used on the hu card. I have a red copy that I'll try out tonight.
It's funny that they mention the problem exists with the RF adapter especially since the majority of us used the RF adapter back then as we weren't familiar with alternate hook-ups or our televisions didn't have the option.

Do you know offhand of any other variants (aside from Ys retail and Ys duo pack-in)?
That depends how deep you want to take it.
Theres the 2 Chamions Forever Boxing red and black variants. As well as a poster that came with some of them (I've only ever seen two of the posters).
Theres actually 3 versions of Ys. 1) Retail 2) Pack in version 1 that says Made in Japan on the disc and has a white case but no back insert. 3) Pack in version 2 that says Made in USA on the disc and has a black case as well as a back insert.
Theres two versions of the Hudsons Game Music CD. 1) Has a front insert 2) Has no front insert.
Insanity has a few versions. 1) CCAG version 2) Preorder version 3) regular release.
Meteor Blaster DX has a few also. 1) CDR first release 2) Signature Edition variant 3) Second printing on a pressed disc.
These are the one's I thought of quickly. If you want pics of any of them for reference you can see them on my photobucket link in my signature.

Glad you guys are enjoying it! I have a couple of contributors lined up who, between them, should have most 89-94 issues of EGM, GamePro, and Game Fan. I'm very much looking forward to putting those online!
TechnoZombie: I do plan to put these up as PDFs before too long. The list of features I'm working on is pretty big, and the time i have for working on the site is temporarily very limited due to some turmoil in nullityville. So I can't say when PDFs will be available, but they are right up there in priority with posting the manual scans Bernie and Arjak have so generously provided.
The remnants of my game magazine collection (complete EGM, gamepro, Next Gen and Sega Visions) is down to a couple key early issues - next time I fly back to the east coast I can grab and scan 'em for ya. I know I've got an early Game Players and EGM #2 hanging around, both of which have Turbo coverage.

I actually like that ad. It is not unique, or amazing, conceptually....but it resonates with me. I don't know if it would have resonated much with the folks who read GamePro back in the day, but here in 2014, I think this sad, quaint little ad would get more love.

What kind of scanning set up do you use? I may be coming into a big stack of old EGMs, I may be able to contribute some scans.
I have been using an Epson V500 scanner for a few moths and I am happy with it. I have scanned a few magazines with the staples removed using the black cardboard trick.
24Bit 400DPI All enhancements features switched off.
I initially scan to TIFF and then use Photoshop to Straighten / crop all pics then run the image processor script to export the images to HQ JPG. Finally I then use Adobe Acrobat Pro to create the PDF.

Why do you go to JPG and from there to PDF? Why don't you go straight from TIFF to PDF? Just save the corrections and adjustments to TIFF so you have a reference image that's lossless.

I have found that I can control the final PDFs size better by pre-processing the images, rather than using Adobe X Pro to do this.
I always save the Tiffs for future use anyway.

I can't speak for him, but what you are suggesting *seems* to (1) complicate the workflow (which is a real pain when processing hundred of pages), (2) introduce potential for error in archiving raw scans (oops! I accidentally overwrote my raw, source tiff with a "modified" tiff) and (3) the end result might not be much different, if discernible at all (check out SuoerPlay's pdf's and see if the file size/image quality ratio is off base).
Personally, the toughest decision is striking a balance between quality image—vs.—file size, since lots of folks use mobile devices, don't always have the best connections/internet service, etc.
I'd love to offer highest quality pdf's....but for 100+ page magazines, the file size mushrooms to ridiculous levels.
Every 5-10 years, it seems, infrastructure improves enough that we will be able to go back to original scans and generate "better" pdf's. As phones/tablets +infrastructure improve, so will the feasibility of "super-high-quality" for everything.

What exactly was the exploit ? Seems my old Wordpress install updates automatically once in a while for security updates at least. I checked for an SMF update too, seems I have the latest version there so all good.
I had an Ikonboard forum once built on Perl that got hacked by some Brazilian group or dude, and he posted a photo of himself flexing his arm muscle on my index, the douchebag that he is... They/he used the server to send out massive spam emails so much so that everything on the server had slowed down, other forums (The Next Level (http://www.the-nextlevel.com/)) that were on there too. Had to apologize to the admin and patch the security hole as there already was an update, just that ikonboard wasn't as advanced as say SMF which gives you a news feed directly from the SMF site when there are updates to be applied, etc.

Same attack vector was used on me a few years ago (old Wordpress installs floating around in "dev" folders). I set all hosted WP installs on my server to automatically update to try and prevent that kind of attack again, and I always uninstall every plugin and theme that isn't being used.
It was brutal - pretty much every .htaccess file and *.php file was infected and had to be manually cleansed due to a bad backup. Took an entire weekend, morning to night, to fix.
I appreciate Wordpress' accessibility and everything, and I've built a lot of sites on top of it, but holy crap is it a mess internally.

If you're hoping to make a site where users can sign up and login and whatnot, you'll probably want to find a 3rd party service that handles security and all that. But if you're just going to make a site with static pages (i.e. Gentlegamer's SNERD Reviews Archive) then you'll probably have nothing to worry about.
I've been looking at wordpress for general layouts, but I don't really want article comments, and would like to have a separate message board for discussions.
May have to steal "Gentlegamer's SNERD Reviews" as a section, it can compliment my "Gentle Grader" side business. :D

I spent a fair amount of time on the website. I never got the Turbo Plays back in the day. Some of the Q/A pages almost mimic the ones found in the Computer and Entertainment Magazines from the 90s.

It's too bad you permanently lost Google Adsense (possibly in addition to the attack from Russian computers, they might not have taken kindly to the play on pedophile with "DoxPhile," etc.) but there must be another comparable ad providing service to help with monetizing...
I haven't researched it yet, but ever since getting an Android phone, I've seen the monetizing model of free apps in the Google AppStore with little spots for ads in them. So you get a useful app for free, and it displays a few ads in it. Google Adsense WILL NOT let you embed their ads in software once you're accepted as a client... It is only for serving ads in websites... So all these app developers are getting monetized with somebody else, I dunno who yet... But yeah, I wanna get info on this some more. I've started to see it on regular Windows desktop apps now like with BitTorrent - that has a spot at the bottom right for loading ads, sometimes with sound which is annoying, but then websites also dump video ads on ya with sound at full blast these days...

People bash DoxPhile all the time, but it is quite an amazing resource. The thing I like is how you can look up a game, and it will xref to all the specific page scans the game is mentioned in.

Something is just wrong for SQL connections exceeding 75,000+ etc. when you don't have serious traffic... What was it, you're forced to share with a more traffic heavy website on the same server and you got a cheaper hosting package because of it (I would assume and hope!) ??

That's right. "Newchat", which advertises itself as super efficient and capable of supporting 1000 users on a shared server, just shit the bed with 6 users and a recently doubled query quota.
I'm hoping to get this worked out. But a return to "oldchat" might be in the future.
Sad, really. Newchat offered an incredible level of integration. :/

How in the hell does chat use to much data? I would have a hard time believing that the chat box uses more then 5gigs a month.
Maybe it's time to move to irc... I love hexchat and irc.freenode.net is a pretty awesome place once you find some good rooms to hang in.
For real, just make a #pcenginefx on freenode or something

EDIT: By "for years", I mean I made it the day PCEFX got hacked and we lost shoutbox.
It's always been available. I'm basically always idling in there. Occasionally people pop in, and out, but IRC is best used idling. Stay when you're not actually there. Read the scrollback/log, lol alot.
It's a good time.
EDIT EDIT: What ever happened with maybe having a shoutbox BACK ON THE FORUM AGAIN. I thought NW was looking into that.
