The two mighty games go head to head, clash of the titans!!
Gate of Thunder Vs Winds/Lords of thunder which game is better?
My vote goes to W/LOT as it's my favorite game of all time on any system.
I'm not saying GOT is not a good game but W/LOT is simply perfect, the music is sublime, the game play is finely tuned to absolute perfection and the graphics are gorgeous!

Hell yeah, a master piece in my opinion, it has better game play, graphics and sound...its better optimized with 2 load times per level versus 1 for GOT, of course GOT is still way ahead of cart and hucard games, the best pce, snes and genesis cartridge games have around 400 to 500 sprite frames, 10 to 16 Background variation, smaller sprites and less sound fx, GOT in comparison has 787 sprite frames and 34 to 37 back ground variations.
Only a hand full of games are optimized( more than one load time per level, WOT and rondo for the super cd and for the pitiful half a meg cd rom2 theres Macross 2036...it has pretty good animation, large bosses, and awesome sound fx thanks to the half a meg of memory dedicated to adpcm.

Winds/Lords Of Thunder is more unique but Gate Of Thunder has more solid gameplay. Both are masterpieces but I think Gate has a slight advantage.
-
Gate of Thunder is the better (if more generic-looking) horizontal shoot-em-up.
Lords of Thunder has amazing aesthetic qualities, but is too easy. Don't get me wrong, LoT is a quality game, but connoisseurs of the genre will admit that GoT offers more.
-

Personally I found it the reverse, I thought the challenge of W/LOT was perfect but I found GOT a little to short and easy.

Ha! I should play them back to back for the ULTIMATE CRITIQUE. :)
Knowing the history of these forums, a majority of folks will go with Lords of Thunder as the better game...Gate of Thunder hasn't received a tenth of the attention/discussion time than Lords (IMHO).
:)

I HATE YOU OTAKU

you love me really Iron Man :D

My guess it will will be a close battle, seems like there's a lot of GOT fans too. :D
-
Gate is tighter in my opinion. I prefer the size of the character sprites and I think the level design is more interesting and just more "my style."
Both are obviously great games.
-
Both are intense, have great variety, and are fantastic in their own ways. I can't decide.
-
Lords/Winds for sure. Better graphics, better theme, better configuration, better everything.
-
ok, gave my vote to GoToBeY!!
In the end it is more my taste of game (and especially musics), and it was one of my first SCD experience too. I always fell that it plays better and more precise than WoT and it is one of my rare "perfectest game" in my book of video games. But WoT really is just one iota behind that.
Anyway, two trully master pieces that showed the 16-bit age who's boss on the shewty throne!!
-
I think Gate is a slightly better game that's as mentioned way more traditional and is a better game for fans of shooters.
I think Lords is a game that takes a lot more risks, swings and misses in spots but is potentially a game with a wider appeal due to things like the power-up system, the store, the level select at the start among other things. I think it's a somewhat friendlier game.
-
I love both, but Lords for the win! Personally, for someone of my limited skills, I find Lords to be perfect in it's difficulty, with Gate being too hard. IIRC, I was able to make it to the last level in Gate, but never could beat it. Finally years later I gave in & used save states to beat it. :(
-
Gates is awesome but I love the unique theme and replay value of Lords of Thunder thanks to the stage select and gem collection for the shop.
-
strange, I find WoT the harder game of the both :-k
-
I love everything about Lords o' Thunda but to me Gate o' Thunda just edges out Lords o' Thunda. Lords has great music but I really like the music more in Gates. Lords o' Thunda kicks the hell outta Winds o' Thunda, though. I mean would you rather be an awesome Lord who sends his son to die for everyone's sins or just some stupid wimpy-ass breeze? How embarrassing!
-
yeah
-
In terms of difficulty, LOT in normal mode is easier than GOT to complete, you have a lifebar, you can buy elixirs or shields, in GOT, if you loose a life, it's almost over...
But GOT is a little easier than WOT in higher difficulty levels, if you completed it in normal you can complete it in hard or devil mode with some training. The game gets really fun and exciting in harder modes, with more ennemies to deal with and frenetic action. WOT in harder modes adds tons of bullets, and the difficulty becomes insane with some levels and bosses.
Both are fantastic, but GOT is my all time favourite game on any support, so it got (ha ha) my vote.
-
Both of these games are "truly epic" and thrash any of the competition, including the glut of Cave releases on the 360 etc.
Voted GOT because the level where the missiles come up the screen was a big WOW moment.
I think the animation on mid and end bosses is better than LOT and as others have pointed out LOT
does play a little easier, mainly because of the over-abundance of crystals you can 'max out' your guy
(landis?) inbetween stages but in GOT your power level stays the same.
-
and there are still folks out there that call GoT the poor mans Thunder Force :(
-
I voted Lords o' Thunder with its selectable path and shop system, but they're both really fantastic shewties. Ask again next week and I'll probably pick GoT.
-
I'm beating my head against the wall trying to decide which game is better. Would have to say Gate for now.

Love both but enjoy Lord's more.
-
Both are top-tier and amazing games. It's difficult to decide which is better, but I give the slight edge & my vote to GOT.
-
Lords get's my vote. The style pushes it over the top. Gate is too "stock" space shootie IMO. It has a been there, done that feel (albeit superbly executed). But I would not drop either from my shelf.
-
i've always preferred GoT. Lords is a great game in its own right, but I don't go back to it nearly as much as Gate.
also: GoT manual artwork ftw.
-
GoT just got it!! :D
-
Gate Of Thunder has more solid gameplay.
Rover nailed it.
Graphics, music, difficultly, and character are important, but gameplay makes the game. Lords is perfect for what it is, but outside of the strategy of picking levels and shopping, the gameplay is nothing more than gluing a thumb to the trigger button and navigating bullet hell for level after level on the D-pad (not that I'm complaining).
GoT has a much more advanced control scheme with its split-second weapon changes, reverse fire, and speed select. Not only are these genuinely useful functions, but they can be executed quickly without messing up the elegance of the two-button controller.
I love both games (graphics more on LoT, music more on GoT), but nothing beats switching to wave, reversing, and blowing the crap out of those ships that try to surround you on level 4 of Gate of Thunder

GOT is currently out in front and looks like it could be the winner.
I still think W/LOT is the better game. :D

This is THE comment.... all the way down to the
"I love both games (graphics more on LoT, music more on GoT), but nothing beats switching to wave, reversing, and blowing the crap out of those ships that try to surround you on level 4 of Gate of Thunder"
Lord of Thunder has the more interesting graphics and the collecting crystals to buy things at the shop is great. The End bosses are massive.
But, the level design of LoT is pretty standard and the bosses don't have as much strategy as GoT has (In my opinions anyway). Also, something has to be said about the level progression of GoT. Each level just builds perfectly on the previous. That is lost in the "Choose a Level" route that LoT too.
I think that Gate of Thunder is not only the winner of this contest but I place it very high in the list of ALL shmups. It just has it all.

Any tips for LOT? This is the hardest shooter I have ever played!!!! Is it like mega man... certain armor works best for certain planet?

Yes, they're all weak against Earth armor.
-
Crack - thanks!
78 - Earth Armor helps, but mostly you just have to play the game a bunch. I was also shocked by LoT's seeming difficultly at first, but the challenge drops once you master a level and learn how to allocate funds.
-
Yeah, even WoT is mainly reaction based, it also requires some memorizing to be able to beat levels without much damage.
-
Oh god, Gate by a country mile
-
I still maintain that GOT is the easier game, with W/LOT the difficulty curve is pitched to perfection and is more of a challenge.
GOT is a AAA title no doubt but W/LOT is the best of the best.
Anyways it appears the forum disagrees with me as it looks like GOT is the winner.
-

I agree that GoT is easier, but I found the difficulty curve in LoT to be quite inconsistent. GoT had a very nice gradual build in challenge and the last level and boss were very hard, but by no means impossible. LoT was not nearly as gradual and would just randomly hop around from easy to hard to really hard, back to regular old hard, etc...
-
OK... I just got LOT last week but I have to say.... Why is it SO F'ING HARD!!!!???? I'll take GOT or Blazing Blazers any day. LOT soundtrack wins hands down though.
-
So GOT won this battle, thinking of sticking GOT up against a new opponent for the next versus battle, going cross platform this time.
:D

Lords of Thunder all the way. It's ranked up there for greatest SHMUMP of all time right by Ikaruga, and Radiant Silvergun.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the music?
I like the way the game gives you choices. I like the freedom to play as I choose. I also like that there is a shop system, and that you don't simply die in one hit like in most other SHMUMPS.
Finally, I like the originality. Gate of Thunder feels like 99% of other shooters. I feel like originality alone is enough to give Lords of Thunder a good head start on any shooter past or present. Outer Space, and military based shooters are played out.
-
Seriously Dude. I'm calling a slight foul on your use of SHMUP as SHMUMP. drop the second M.

Or better yet, don't shmup at all.
They're all SHTTRS. [-(

Funny they use that one on the Toilet forums too. :)

I've always thought Deep Blue was not a SHMUP but a SHITTRS

Are you thinking of Toilet Kids?

oh please no. not one of those.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the music?
we sure do mention the music a lot, as we did in about the 2302 threads that WoT music got mentioned during the past 10 years
Finally, I like the originality. Gate of Thunder feels like 99% of other shooters.
Gate of thunder feels like 1% of other shooters. it's far superior in almost every criteria to most of its rivals of the same school class.
-
Are you thinking of Toilet Kids?
lol
-
Fantasy shooters prior to GoT are too common to list.
Still, Lords is much more unique aesthic and gameplay-wise.

Phone autocorrect. I do most ofy posting from work. When I type mistakes and try and delete a letter for some reason my phone deletes random letters in a paragraph. I gave up trying to correct things long ago. Most people online probably think I have the education of a 9 year old.
