Title: SEGA Mega Drive - Good games + Questions?
Post by: Punch on November 03, 2013, 07:10:24 PM
So, I recently got a Virtua Racing japanese cart in a NintendoAge raffle which came with some famicom games, and since it would be stupid to grab a cart just because it's free and let it grab dust somewhere, I bought a cheap Mega Drive model 1 which will arrive this week.
1. Point me to some great games!
2. The Mega Drive is a VA6 (315-5433), which has "faulty TMSS" according to a wiki which I don't have the link anymore. Am I screwed or I shouldn't mind so much? Will I be able to use an everdrive normally on it?
3. The seller said that there is some buzzing/noise on the headphone jack (but it's normal on the AV cable), is that easily fixable (ie change a couple of capacitors)? If not I won't mind much.
4. What are the correct specs (amperage, etc.) of the power source that I should buy to use with the console?
5. Is it possible to play US/euro games on it?
Thanks.

??? MD Undeadline is great. Sure just one character, but PAL Soft redid the game around him. They also removed the random bullshit of the other two versions. It's a pure skill based game now.

Oh shit I thought I saw Alisia Dragoon mentioned already before I posted my stuff.
That game should be at the very. very. very. top of a "stuff to play for MD" list.
To me it's the best side scrolling actiony game on the system.

+1 on Mickey.
If you like RPGs Might and Magic 2 and the D&D game (Warriors of the Eternal Sun) are also good.

Everyone's had some great suggestions...here's a couple other lesser-known ones:
-Wings of Wor (Gynoug in JP/EU) is a distant relative of the Cho Aniki series - good shootie -Shadow Blasters (Shiten Myouou in JP) is a fun 30 minute or so sidescroller that can be had cheap...great tunes -El Viento is another Wolf Team game that people either love or hate. it's worth a run through. Just avoid the crap-tastic sequel on the Mega CD

Wings of Wor, Steel Empire, and Streets of Rage 2 make up probably 80% of my Genesis game play lately. They should all be pretty easy to pick up on the cheap.
Gunstar Heroes, Vectorman and Sunset Riders are also great fun.
Bio Hazard Battle is another fun and cheap shooter.

Off topic but I shit you not that Midnight Resistance uses the same sound fx found in Verytex. Same composer so it makes sense.

Well thanks to this thread, I'm carving out some quality time with my Genny tonight. Not sure what to play first. Probably Castle of Illusion and then SOR 2 to start.

Not shitting! I love Verytex. It's one of my favorites on the MD. Have now owned it for 22 years. I just played the games back to back one day and my ears went "What the holy f%$^"

Excuse my small knowledge of english, but what do you mean with "that's rich"?
Anyway, it's funny because I actually found a 90's Mega Drive PSU gathering dust in a small music instrument store haha. I'm having more trouble assembling the Mega Drive than Goku ever had to summon Shen Long (:
I'm honestly considering to phone Tectoy to see if they have any Mega Drive replacement controllers... they still sell those officially licensed mega drives with 100 games on memory, and the white variation of the controller that goes with one of the models is kinda good looking (also standard 9 pin cable just like controllers from the 90's, that's curious). The blue one that comes with a Master System of the same color isn't bad but isn't pretty either. Well at least is official.
Oh and if your tv can take it an rgb cable md looks v nice on rgb
Can I mod the Mega Drive to output RGB on VGA (for PC monitors)? If yes I'm seriously considering doing it.

Im not sure but I don't think it's possible to directly output to VGA. I live in scart land so it's easy that way

There are plenty of RGB to VGA external converters you could use of varying qualities. You get what you pay for though, $50 will get you something that will display but may look like garbage, while an XRGB will look awesome but be expensive. Alternatively, if you've got a component SDTV you can get a cheap ($50ish) RGB to Component transcoder that will look awesome.

Since the original post is labeled "...+ Questions"', I have a question.
I am a "novice" at best with the Genny/MD, but are there any good, overhead (Zelda 1 type) adventure games for the Genesis? None come to mind in my experience.

Fire up your power base converter and play Golvellius by Compile. Great tunes and a solid game (though it is a complete ripoff of Zelda in the overworld levels)

Interesting. I have an SMS model 2. I recently passed up golvellius at a local shop. Asking $20 for it with no manual.

Quoted for truth. Golvellius is a fine Zelda clone. I'm actually planning on making an Internet video show about obscure video games, and Golvellius is going to be the subject of my first episode. :)
