Please post titles of Japanese language PC Engine RPGs that you consider to be good, so that Xak doesn't need to start 90 more threads.

So I assume this is CD as well.
Blood Gear is an awesome action RPG. I got far not knowing the language and finally got stuck on a stage that looped over and over.
There is a treasure trove of untapped RPGs on the PCE CD and hopefully its a matter of time before more hackers come join in on the fun of bringing these games to english. Obviously I am a fan the Xak but I got hooked on part 1(msx spanish version) before ever playing 3.

There is just too many good games that are japanese only that blend genres or have RPG elements like Zero 4 Champ 2. That game is a dream to me to see in english one day. The weird 3D dungeon RPG part baffles me.
-
Xak is definitely better on MSX, despite having chunk scrolling.
-
^Yeah you are correct. The graphics look much sweeter on PC-98 but I overall like the look and coloring of the MSX. I was disappointed with Xak 2, they tried to make it more "zelda like" and failed miserably.
I played Xak 1 & 2 compilation on the PCE CD and it was awesome, streamlined into one game but I wanted to beat the second one in english first.
Xak 3 I have yet to get into. I wanted to beat Xak 2 on the MSX before diving into it. I've got it ready to play but Im almost tempted to beat "Xak Tower of Gazzelle" before even touchng XAK 3 on the PCE CD.
-
Tower of Gazelle is odd.
and, the PC 98 version of Xak is way too chunky to bother playing if you have access to a different one. The PC Engine plays better but somehow does not look as nice as the MSX2 version.
-
The PC engine one, they really made it into a "Zelda slasher" if memory serves me. Its kinda like how Ys Book 1 & 2 are condensed into one game. Same with Xak 1 & 2
-
Blood Gear!!!!!!!
-
Valkyrie no Densetsu
Tower of Druaga
cadash
three great action dungeon crawlers with RPG elements. Might have a little problem with language barrier later on in the namcot games tho.
-
There's an English translation for Tower of Druaga. Just FYI.
-
Arjak I will have to look into that translation. I also know there is a translation for Crest of Gaia on HUCARD?
I am more interested in traditional Hucards like Sinibad getting translated. My love forever and dream has been to one day see Arunamu no Kiba translated. Each boss has a super gorey death scene and all your characters are weremonsters. I got pretty far when I found a japanese walkthrough with pictures on where to go next way back in 2007 but then I realized, its not fun to play RPGs without knowing what the storyline is.

^You are the man. Unfortunately I have to wait for the english versions of any PC engine game. So happy with Startling Odyssey, better it be released as it was than never at all. I cant believe the hate he recieved for making a "machine translation" damn haters. Thats how I made Captain Tsubasa 3. But i learned japanese translated to spanish smoother and in better detail.
Anyways, I just got into Cosmic Fantasy 2 for the first time. This must be the grand daddy of all those "make an RPG" programs. From the look of it I prefer the background screens not be the overworld map. I read that they omitted all status changes in this game? I just got the girl back in my party and must head into the valley of the west. Cool game so far but only the story is driving it.
I remember HATING Dragon Slayer soooo bad when I played it in 2005. I quit at least halfway through the game.
-
Dragon Slayer is a great and under-appreciated game.

Um What?

Play further, the game gets much better. I fully enjoyed cosmic fantasy 2. It is a game that is not very serious about itself. and is a light hearted adventure. It's not going to throw anything super new at you gameplay wise but rpgs rarely do that

Dragon slayer is a fantastic game with several really cool story elements. highly underatted game, this game exemplifies many of the standard ideals that make up this genre. from the simple quest leading to something bigger, to Man vs. Nature, and the corruption of good vs evil. The fighting system is also under appreciated in this game it does just what it needs to without forcing to much grinding. There are also several hidden objects and paths later in the game should you choose to grind/search though. Overall I really liked Dragon slayer LOH.
-
Wizardry 3 and 4. Enough said. :)
-
I just remember endless level grinding to extend gameplay hours for Dragon Slayer.

Not necessary unless your combat strategy is to turn up the turbo switch and hold down the button.
-
Well I'll replay it soon , I gotta beat the RPGs im currently getting crunk playing
I wonder how much text is in Body Conquest 2 . I beat the original on the Famicom Disk System. I'd play BC2 it if it were translated.

only in dragon slayer II if i remember correctly. dragon slayer I was not so bad on grinding.

How gaijin friendly is Dragon Slayer II? Any major puzzles or other stumbling blocks that would stop me cold?

I have played into a small bit, and it doesn't seem to be to hard to figure out menus ect. But I never went back to it so I can't say more than that.

I didnt mind playing machine translate Startling Odyssey 2. Did you?

It's pretty bad. Way more running back and forth talking to specific people at specific times. I played through several chapters before giving up and playing other games instead.

I haven't tried it. It was fun in Japanese though.

I'm not fluent in Japanese either. I haven't played DotB 1 & 2 since 2000, but the visuals aren't very pollished, even though there is some cool art. The gameplay wasn't as fun for me as other PCE digicomics, but I imagine it would be much easier for me to navigate today.
Ranma 1/2 #2 is a good digicomic to start with.

you can learn hiragana und katakana within 6 hours. just try the book "remembering the kana". ;)
that helps a lot in JRPG´s to read item names, location names and so on. after that you can start to learn the 2000+ kanji and after that: vocabulary. :)
its the way i try to learn japanese, already learned the kana and 100 kanji right now (1 year learning time).
dragon slayer II is beatable with a good guide at hand, there is one for the SFC version on gamefaqs. perfectly usable for the PCE version. but DS II is not the greatest game to start getting into JRPG´s. there are much better choices like neo metal fantasy, tengai makyou games, tenshi no uta games... ;)
-
I already know 2 languages, I dont need another one floating around in my head. I tried to learn before and gave up when I realized Im too old for this and there are plenty of translated games I have yet to beat.
