Post by: Nando on November 25, 2013, 01:26:18 AM
Doing some research on side scrolling hack n slash games. What do you recommend?

So far I've been playing

Magic sword
Stryder
Ninja spirit
Cadash with the warrior

Arcade Astyanax is actually kind of fun if you look it up on MAME.

Inferno (MSX)
if you like Magic sword you should check out both D&D games on CPS2, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, and Gaiapolis

If you're going that loose, then you'll find a long list for PCE alone.

Legendary Axe II is a more standard Rastan style game.

Discovered and been playing Tiger Road.

I love KoD and KoR but I'm sticking to a 2d perspective.  The key for me is that the chasacter must have a weapon, ideally a sword.

Stryder

Stryder is almost exactly like Rastan. Both Stryder and Rsatan were programmed by SNK and feature shared graphcis and music and gameplay they are the same except name.

Don't know if it really counts as "hack and slash" but Black Tiger is one of my all time faves in the arcade (they have a dedicated cab of this at Galloping Ghost!)

Black Tiger is Capcom's take on Castlevania. They didn't need to make another one, because they perfected it with their first effort.

SonSon II is literally the closest thing Black Tiger ever got a sequel too.

Definitely check out Gaiapolis by Konami in MAME.  I would also check out Light Bringer by Taito.  You'll also need MAME for that since it's on F3 hardware and was never released on console. (sadly)

So far Trojan is the only game that uses the shield defensively from the players  input.

Volgarr the Viking definitely deserves a mention in this thread.

It's really well done and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
