Title: Would Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 both been possible on the Turbografx?
Post by: lukester on November 27, 2013, 02:21:59 AM
Honestly curious.

Would probably need to be on Super CD too?

Can the tech wizards/Turbo aficionados here speculate? ;)

Yes and no; it couldn't do a pixel perfect match of the SNES or Genny versions, but it could certainly handle a good port.  The sprite animation should be doable (look at Dracula X), but the parallax would obviously have to be changed to fit the limits of line scrolls w/ overlapping sprites (not too many to avoid flicker), animated tiles, etc.

the far more important question would be, who wants to have an earthworm jim on the PCE anyway?

An original Earthworm Jim game for Arcade Card could be much more impressive.

A similarly sized (as the Genesis/SNES versions) HuCard port would need some customizing to keep most of the parallax.

The SuperGrafx could rock it.

That's a SuperGrafx project, 100%.

It isn't worth trying to do any other way.

It would also be fairly easy to sort out on SGX, because that game is not that complicated outside of the scenery.

It's literally the perfect example of "graphics = awesome gaem!!1!112".

I would rather have Cool Spot, but I do enjoy EJ!

I would've liked a port back in the day (even the GB and GG ports were pretty good), but not now.  It'd be an awful lot of work to make, and I'd rather see such efforts put into something original.

Yea, the SuperGrafX would have *no* problems with an Earthworm Jim 1/2 port, complete with unmitigated parallax.  If it were done on the TurboGrafx, you'd have to find tricky ways to deal with the layer-on-layer parallax.  The nice part about doing an EWJ port on the TG/SGX would be whoever programs it could choose between 320x224 (like the Genesis port) or 256x224 (like the SNES port).  Personally, I'd probably go with 256x224.  Less chance of sprite flicker and you could use the more colorful SNES sprites/tiles for resources.

Agreed. Lots of praised heaped on these games but I don't really think they are great game. I suck at games and these were tough games so, that's part of the reason. Other than that though, their are just a ton of tiny little things that piled up to cause me to not really enjoy these games.

More than agree, I like the ideas of ports, but if your going to go ahead and put so much effort into a game, why not just do something NEW

Couldn't resist hehe.  This is what Earthworm Jim would have looked like on the SuperGrafX.  :)
