Bit of a head scratcher here, gents. I region modded my Turbo Express last weekend (thanks Turbokon). It plays all my other PCE games just fine (Street Fighter II, Valkyrie Densetsu, PC Denjin), but when I put in PC Genjin 3 I get the 'no game inserted' white screen. The HuCard is pristine and the contacts look good.
Only thing I can think of is that Bonk 3 requires a 'higher powered' system than just a standard TG. I couldn't find anything on the internet that says that. Just speculating. Any thoughts?
-
Do you have a pce system to test the bonk 3 with? I know the everdrive and flash card won't boot on some region modded systems.

unfortunately, no... so, it could be the card, but like i said, it looks great
-
Have you already tried cleaning the cartridge contacts using alcohol? Even if they are looking fine, there could be some transparent layer of dirt on them. You can also try to clean the cartridge slot of your Turbo Express.
-
yup. tried that. I even hit it with the plastic eraser. no dice (its real clean now tho).
I literally checked every single game I have to see if the same thing would happen to any other game after the mod. They all work. I'm starting to think its a bad card even tho the guy I bought it from said it was tested.
I'm thinking the only way to confirm it is to check it in a real PC Engine (which I don't have or know anyone who does).
-
Alrighty. The only way I'm going to know for sure if its the card or my TE is if some gracious soul among you would let me mail them the game to test it in a PC Engine. Of course, I would pay for shipping both ways.
I would prefer it was a PCE GT because I figure that's the closest thing hardware-wise to a modded TE. After that, an original white PC Engine would be my second choice. I would prefer it were NOT a SuperGrafx or DUO (if possible). I know I'm starting to sound picky here but I will be asking for my money back if it doesnt work so I want to make the test as "valid" as possible for the seller.
Before everyone raises their hand, you should know that I'm in the Air Force stationed in Germany. The postage to an APO address is the same as it is in the states (which I am paying for.. friendly reminder) but it does require a Customs Statement (which is free) which can only be filled out an a Post Office. So, to mail it back, you will have to go to a Post Office.
Hit me up if you can help a bruva out.

If it works in anything the problem is likely with your GT and not the card. I don't have a GT, but I do have a TE and region converter card, a Turbo Duo, a Duo RX, and a CG II briefcase that I can try it in if nobody else offers.
-
You can send it to me, I have all the systems you mentioned and almost everything in between ;)
I had someone sent me a dead salamander hucard that looked perfect.

Lol, we're trying to figure out directions...military bases in foreign countries aren't exactly conducive to gps directions :P

Ok folks... this story is going to have an ending (hopefully a happy one). I made the short drive to whisper2053's place this afternoon. When we popped Genjin3 into his PC Engine Duo-R we got.... wait for it.... a white screen. Just like I got on my TE. It looks like, for as great as this card looks, its a dud. So I will have to try and get my money back. I would prefer a replacement if they have one. More to follow on that I guess.
While I was there I tried a few of his sizeable collection of JP Hucards in my TE and they all worked. Additionally, he had an Everdrive we threw in and it also worked perfectly. I might have to fork out the considerable cash for one of those.
I ended up spending a lot more time over there than I thought I would mostly just checking out all whisper2053's awesome stuff. I even learned a thing or two I didn't know.
Thanks again to whisper2053. He really came thru for me. If any of you deal with him in the future. I will vouch for him as a knowledgeable, honest, and very helpful dude that you can rely on.

have you tried pulling the hu card out to where the power lock will touch the top of the card? also try slipping some paper card stock behind the hu card. sometimes the pins are recessed just enough to make it hard to make contact.
-
Sadly I did try both of those things PC. No matter what position or level of fitment in the hucard slot that I tried got much of a change. The sole variance was the one instance where I got it to boot up to a pink screen instead of a white, but that is not exactly helpful lol.
Thanks for the kind words schweaty :)

CONCLUSION - I explained everything to the seller on ebay and they immediately refunded by purchase without even requesting the broken game be returned. I cannot recommend japanyouwant highly enough. If you see them on ebay (or anywhere else) do not hesitate to buy from them. They will make sure you are satisfied.
-
They were probably extra helpful as an axis power courtesy, not knowing you're a yankee.
-
Another update: when I told Japanyouwant about my problems with the game, I asked if they had another one they could send me. They didn't and promptly refunded my money. At the time, I asked them if they get another one in, to give me the first opportunity to buy it. Whelp... yesterday I got an email from them saying they just got another one in and they would sell it to me for the same price as the first one!
Its on its way from Japan right now. I will let you know if this one ends up working. What I really wanted to get out of this post is another plug for Japanyouwant. I promise they aren't my cousins or anything. They seem like honest folk and deserve credit when it is due.

Awesome! So glad to hear that this has a happy ending!
-
Last update: I got my new copy of Genjin 3 in the mail today. And it works! So... after a couple months, a little thrash, and some help from some goodhearted people it all worked out in the end.
-
Glad to see everything worked out.
-
A happy ending. Punch a hole in the other one and make yourself a nice key chain!

I've been wondering what to do with the dud Huey. Cosmetically it looks good. Anybody else ever re-purpose a HuCard into something cool?
-
Sell it for big monies to a collectard. They'll never know it doesn't work.
-
Send it to thesteve, he may be able to fix it.

Usually the non working Hueys are burned for good, either electronically damaged or mechanically, the little chip in the centre of the black are upside down, put there with an old industrial state of the art technic called bonded/bonding, nano welding made in gold, can't be done by hand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermosonic_bonding
But, making them into huey dogtags sounds crazy cool, making it also look like a security passcard with NSA clearance =)

Hey Send it to The Steve and if he fixs it Auction it off. I have a copy myself and it is the only way most of us can play Bonk 3 in some form, very expensive game especially U.S.
