Title: Any hidden gems for the Game Boy?
Post by: VenomMacbeth on December 09, 2013, 06:12:25 PM
I'm looking for some good action platformers, run-&-guns, Pole Position style racing games, and if such a thing is available, any After Burner-esque pseudo-scalers.

Here are the games I currently have for the system:

Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening
Tetris
Dr. Mario
Sagaia
Metroid II - Return of Samus
Nemesis
Super Mario Land
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
Kid Icarus - Of Myths and Monsters
Solar Striker
R-Type DX
Galaga & Galaxian
Battle Unit Zeoth

So far, for future purchases, I'm musing at Street Racer, Mortal Kombat II (or possibly Street Fighter), one of the Contra games, Bonk's Adventure, Kirby's Dreamland...and probably some others I can't think of right now.  I'd really like a copy of Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS or X, but I don't have a kidney to spare.  Any suggestions for good games?

Not really hidden gems, surely, but seeing as how they're not on your list I'd like to mention how I really liked Final Fantasy Legend 3, Alleyway, and Mario Land 2.

Itchy & Scratchy Miniature Golf Madness.  = one of my personal faves, and nobody played it.

Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS is the best shooter on the system, good luck finding a legit copy though.

Bill and Ted adventure is actually quite good
Castlevania, Belmonts revenge

Street Fighter has terrible frame rate issues. (Too ambitious)

Not really obscure, but Motocross Maniacs is a blast.

Also, Belmont's Revenge.

Ridiculous no one has mentioned the best game ever, Donkey Kong '94.

Bonk's Adventure is better than it should be.

Battletoads, Boxxle (Sokoban), DuckTales, Gargoyle's Quest, Kirby's Pinball Land, Mega Man series (Rockman World), Mario's Picross, Mickey's Dangerous Quest, Rescue of Princess Blobette.

There's a ton of good games on the ol' Game Boy.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. :)

So I believe I may have unearthed something akin to a holy grail...Battle of Olympus, one of my favorite NES games.  I just discovered it was ported to the Game Boy!  I can't seem to find any copies for sale, though...is it particularly rare?

[EDIT] Used ebay international & found a copy for sale in Germany.  Mine nao!  8)

Trip World is a pretty damn good platformer for the Game Boy made by Sunsoft. It has only been released in Japan and Europe though, and is quite hard to find.

If you're looking for more 1 on 1 fighting games:
-Street Fighter Alpha GBC
-Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
-KOF 96
-Power Quest GBC (fighting w/ RPG elements)
-Transformers Beast Wars GBC

Also, Ninja Spirit which unfortunately was never released in the US.

I like how GB games that were "ported" are really totally new games. Such as the Contra and Ninja Gaiden games. Theres tons more that are different than their console counterparts.
