Title: Genesis Model 1 Sound
Post by: toymachine78 on December 11, 2013, 07:00:21 AM
My genesis sound always sounds clipped, whether through the TV or surround sound. Its as if it was mixed too loud from the source.  It can often be very grating on the ears. Anyone experience this? How do you fix it? You can hear the clipping regardless of the volume level.

Does your model 1 have the "high definition graphics" printed on it?  Some later hardware revisions of the model 1 use the model 2's sound circuitry & therefore sound like ass themselves.

If you're unsure, have a look at this. (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones)

The slider could be a bit dirty/messed up too.  Try moving it up and down a bit and then go back to the volume you want.
Also, this thread is helpful if you're interested in build revisions for Genesis hardware:

I thought the volume slider was strictly for the headphone out jack.

It is, and it shouldn't have any affect on the composite out audio.  Toymachine, you've probably just got one of the bad hardware revisions.  I have the HDG model 1 & it sounds eons better than the model 2, especially from the headphone jack.

You're right, when he was talking about surround sound I'd assumed (never a wise decision!) he was using the headphone jack instead of the mono outputted by the back of the unit with composite cables.  Even on units without "High Definition Graphics" printed on them, the sound is quite good except for V7, the unit without the EXT port or the blank spot for it.

I highly recommend reviewing that Sega16 thread, it's very very neat.  And even a Model 2 can sound quite nice (in my opinion) if you use the CCAM mod.

Oh...I didn't even consider that, and I plug my Genny into the surround sound using the headphone jack all the time!  #-o

Do they make a model 1 stereo av cable, or are you stuck using the rca with a headphone adapter?

The PCE stereo cable is what a stereo cable would be for the model 1 Genesis, but the extra speaker will only ouput static. Unfortunately, the headphone jack is the only way to get stereo output without modding your system, but it's also the only way to balance out the audio in too many Sega-CD games.

Actually, if you look at the pinout on a Genesis 1, what would be the second audio on a PCE cable is actually a 5V line from the Genny!  I made that mistake myself one time using a PCE cable and thought something was messed up with the system, but it was actually that 5V making my TV buzz.
