As stevek666 said, it looks vaguely like a classic sci-fi illustration, a style I am very fond of. I wish more Western boxes used painted covers. It used to be fairly common back in the 80s for console (especially Atari games) and home computer products to have painted covers. Some of the Atari cover art is outstanding.

And no one is going to comment on this!? Absolutely splendid, sunteam! I love it! It is actually pretty neat (I'd love to have it framed -- no I'm not kidding) for it's straightforward aesthetics. It certainly has a charm to it (though the ape's face is pretty horrid).

A long, long time ago, I was inspired to scan these bad boys:

Exhibit 1: Capture the Beast (VIC-20) (http://home.comcast.net/~demonami/museumbeast.html)

Exhibit 2: Vic Trek (VIC-20) (http://home.comcast.net/~demonami/museumvictrek.html)

I have never had the heart to open these babies up (plus, I don't have a working tape drive for the VIC-20)... but I absolutely love them, particularly Capture the Beast. As you can see, they were from a no-budget software house (probably two brothers in a basement) and they released a bunch of games. I used to have Capture the Beast framed in my office. One day, if I am fortunate enough, I will meet the artist. It probably was a friend of the developers.

Seriously, I love the "models" they used. Could they not find *anyone* better to pose for the pictures? Seriously, the hobbled "security guard" at my old high school was more appropriate than the pudgies featured in Konami's flyers!

By the way, I love the earlier Neo Geo games, in fact I prefer them to the newer ones to the most part (especially ever since Playmore was on board). You know, I don't remember hearing anything about it. Then again, I didn't always read the Editorials or Letters to the Editor back in the day.

I don't think it was just a one-off idea... not a series of ads with scantily clad women (which they *should* have pursued... just think, a new ad every month.... ).

Back in about '91 or so my friend and I got into his dad's stacks of Playboy/Penthouse magazines, and I remember seeing that ad. I don't think it was too controversial for Penthouse magazine ^^;;;
