Title: State of Emergency in SC
Post by: toymachine78 on February 12, 2014, 04:01:26 AM
Major ice storm blowing through. Got three inches within the the last 12 hours, and more is falling and is expexted to. Continue to Thursday morn.

Great day for some Turbob if we don't lose power. Weve dodged that bullet thus far.

I really get a kick out of the south's lack of snowskills.   We got 3 inches here and all we did was go "oh hey its snowing.  lets go get a pizza."

Its 29F here and I don't wear a jacket outside.  f*ck YEAH OHIO.

Down in Alabama, they got .002" one time and the whole city panicked and shut down.

Shovels. Salt. Sand.

That costs money. Money which they do not have.

I wish I could find the article reading about it. It's really a sad situation.

Yeah when I first moved down south here from Ohio I went from 10° and snow to 70° and sunny in January 93.  Then by March in Columbia SC we got the "blizzard of the century!"  Haha it was a couple inches.  All the grocery stores were out of milk, bread and beer.  News stations were covering it like it was the end of the world.  It was so nuts.  That same day it was the "Blizzard of the Decade!" in Cleveland.  My friend sent a pic of him in the snow.  Little did I know the snow mound was actually his parents car completely covered in snow.

Shovels. Salt. Sand.

Use the above shit on roads and walkways... and drive/walk slowly...

Dress warm.

Send this to your local officials. Many lives will be saved.

Dude don't be a dick. 3-6 inches of sleet and ICE not snow, is a problem anywhere. The pic above is not snow its the accumulation of sleet and freezing rain.

We don't have salt, sand, and whatever the hell else because it would be poor budgeting to spend money on a fleet of plows and tons of salt for a severe winter event that happens once every decade. Its not because were broke. Actually SC ranks higher on the list for fiscal solvency. Want broke? Look at California or especially Michigan and Ohio. Those  f*ckers are moving down here by the droves for work. They can't maintain a f*cking city like Detroit but they have clear roads during a snow storm... Thank goodness....

So STFU!

That's okay... it snows in other parts, places I can drive to. :) I can't drive to even see snow here on this tropical island. If it ever snowed here, the entire population of this island would resort to cannibalism.

Tell me WHO could run a city like that. It's a joke, even here.  And I live really close. Grosse Pointe. It's really nice. Detroit is the only bad thing about Michigan, and even that is debatable in some aspects. Those that can't find work aren't looking hard enough.

And... It's snow. Frozen water. Pick up a shovel and shovel that shit! Drive slow. Like really slow. 10 min. Drive should take an hour. It'll be ok

Im from Colorado so snow is no stranger to me.  I love the stuff actually.  I live in east Tennessee right now and Ive gotta say its a lot different here than Colorado.  First off its not flat here.  Its hilly and roads are mostly narrow two lane winding up and down roads.  You can plow and salt all you want but if some of these roads get snow covered they are impassible period.  Even if you have a good 4wd vehical youll still get stuck because someone else will get stuck and block you.  Additionally, it seems like we get a lot more ice than I ever remember in Colorado.  Maybe its because its more humid here.   Bottom line, snow does shut things down here but not solely because people dont know how to drive in it.  Its a different world here in the south.

I understand the hilly roads. I've been down south many many times, most roads are drivable under any condition. In the mountains, yea, forget about it.

Dude that's the point... there is a big difference in snow accumulation and freezing rain and sleet accumulation. You could literally prob ice skate on my front yard. I'm a 200lb man, and it would support me without cracking or leaving foot depressions.

My poor dog couldn't even use the bathroom because she was sliding around everywhere. I had to take her in the road where it was rutted enough for her to walk lol.

And BTW..  they don't sale snow shovels here. Not that it would help with 2-3in of ice.

Who uses snow shovels for ice.  It's not an ice shovel.

Use a coal shovel.   Or a spade.   It's not that hard to get rid of.   I can clear my driveway out in about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Pour salt
Step 2: Go inside for 20 minutes
Step 3: Go outside and get that shit out of there.

If you don't have salt, just pour some gas and drop a match.

People in the south sound really disabled with something as simple as snow and ice.    My family down south is like OH GOD 6 INCHES OF SNOW WHAT THE HELL.

It's funny, really.  They're panicking, and I'm driving to work with 4" of my windshield cleared off.   The rest can defrost eventually.

Down here people make it into a bigger deal than it really is on purpose.  They use it as an excuse to take work off or similar.  Most people here really don't make it a big deal.  The news likes to, mainly for never having anything else good to report on.

In Texas, snow isn't that big of an issue where we live. Ice is a totally different monster.

Agree though, the weather folk go into orgiastic frenzy with the weather. They finally get to hog most of the air time.

Title: Re: State of Emergency in SC
Post by: geise on February 14, 2014, 03:10:13 AM
Yeah it's all just ratings.  NC does handle the weather a lot better than SC though.  In SC quite a few really are stupid about it.  The problems that I see here in NC is that people are dumb with driving in it.  To my surprise though most of the cars I saw wrecked and abandoned on the side of the road during/after the bad weather were mostly out of state cars from Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland.  There were also some NC drivers, but I guess some get cocky and think oh this is nothing.  People in general just aren't smart when it comes to weather sometimes.

Not every year, but often, I go down to SC during spring...when the ocean is still icy (before tourists).

I will definitely have to meet up with folks the next time I venture south...(I'm not sure if I am going this April/May...but it is likely).

Well everything is relative to where you live. We don't get snow very often, so we don't deal with it well. On the other hand hurricanes can blow through and we won't bat an eye, where as other regions might freak the f*ck out. Same with tornados in the Midwest. And earthquakes on the west coast.

What's hilarious is that he wasn't even exaggerating. Folks would wear heavy clothes in the "winter" (overcast skies and an occasional rain, at worst)...stores sold winter clothes, but it wouldn't even qualify as autumn (for someone from NJ, folks up north would find it even funnier).
