The GBA could play original GB Operation C, which was pretty good, and GB Alien Wars, which I never tried.  It can also play Contra Advanced:  The Alien Wars EX which is pretty bad.  Even though a Contra III that replaces the overhead levels with stages from Hard Corps sounds good in theory, in practice it kind of plays like shit.

Contra 4 on the DS is a legit new game, and entirely original.  I say go for that.

DS has the old two NES contra on it (unfortunately not FC version)..but only if you have beaten the main game.

als DS konami arcade history has original arcade contra on it, which i like very much :)

GBA contra was ok, but too much of a mixed bag between SFC spirits and MD hardcorps art.

Contra: Alien Wars is the tits!  I was actually gonna post about it in the "underrated games" thread but this seemed more appropriate.  It's a pretty good approximation of the "Super" version, considering the 8-bit hardware.
