Just curious again...I wonder what the biggest Game is sizewise...the hardware limit is 540 MB, if I look at the specs of the Intersect 1x.
Is there a single game that fully uses that much space?
-
maybe Gulliver boy comes close with all the video?
-
probably not, but is beyond shadowgate considered large due to the scenery?
-
Trick question. They're all 120mm.

I believe if you don't count audio, fmvs, etc and just raw game data Dracula X might be the biggest.

CD space is taken up by redbook and adpcm audio. The rest of the game assets take up very little space. 16-bit games were measured in megabits, not megabytes. The largest MD/SFC cart games at 48 megs were only using 6 MB of the 540 MB capacity of CD-ROM discs of the time.

Then why are all those Roms so different in size? The ones that I´ve tested over the last days differ hugely between 100 megs and 540...and I guess they´ve been ripped directly from originals?

If you download a ripped game with the wav files compressed to something like mp3s, then the overall size will be smaller. But PCE CD games do range in size like that, as many use very little redbook audio and/or don't stream hours of adpcm dialogue.

The max size can be up to 74minuts (which is ~680megabytes; in decimal, not binary). 1kilobyte in binary is 1,024bytes, 1kilobyte in decimal is 1,000 bytes.
If you don't count redbook/cdda audio, then probably any of the games with FMV will be the biggest.

Shouldn´t PCE games be max 540 MB in size? At least the specs on Intersect 1x say that...and thats the same model as the CDROM2. Or am I wrong in that?

Nope. They shouldn't. Your assumptions (and those specs) are wrong.

what the hell is Intersect 1x?

One of the original NEC computer cd drives, very similar to the PCE CD in design.
