Yeah, but with PayPal protections or may be worth the risk. What's the realistic eBay price these days?

yeah. the risk was minimal.  i assume i have some protections in case it goes foul.
i asked a question too just to test responsiveness.

Yeah, you can easily get your money back.

Last I saw sell went for over $700 because people are horrible and the universe is keeping me from having all the Wonder Boy games.

I'm a little sad now......hopefully it all goes well for you but like you said, the risks are pretty minimal if you paid with paypal so you should be good either way. Well done man.

I got the Japanese one for like 20 bucks new like 15 years ago or so, maybe even a little longer, but even then the English version was hard to get.  I can't see that someone would bother to make a reproduction of this particular game, I can see something like Earthbound, but not this.  I had the same thoughts when I bought an Ys IV and Lords of Thunder brand new off of ebay in the last couple of years - and if they are fakes, they're damn good ones since I can't tell the difference after 20 years of ownership and importing PCE games.  I think you got the real deal, congrats!

Dynastic Hero Turbo often sells for hundreds of dollars, but is rarely available to buy. Ys IV and LoT are cheap games. The only known mass produced bootleg so far is Sapphire, because it used to sell for as much as Dynastic Hero does now. By comparison, Earthbound is a relatively cheap and common game.

I agree mostly, but Earthbound is one of those games that goes for way more than it's worth, and the price has been driven up due to demand, even though there are probably plenty of copies.  This is a game I know that bootlegs exist of.  And I didn't mean to infer Ys IV or GoT were uncommon at all, just that since I bought them sealed I wondered momentarily if they were fake since most games on the cheap side of things are already opened at this point.  As rare as the English version of Dynastic Hero is, I can't imagine the effort in making a bootleg would justify itself.  What's the demand really like?  I doubt many people outside of this forum have even heard of it, even though it's a great game of course.  I'm not disagreeing that D.H. is rarer that Earthbound, that's certain.  Just saying that the demand on EB outweighs the demand on DH, so if you are a bootlegger trying to make a dishonest buck, why not go the more lucrative route?
Title: Re: Just pulled the trigger on this (eBay)
Post by: Necromancer on February 17, 2014, 09:30:53 AM
Effort required and profit margins per unit would be a factor, as it's a lot harder to make a booty cart than a CD and the cost per unit is higher; meaning you could surely sell more copies of Earthbound to a wider audience but you wouldn't necessarily turn more profit.

There was a copy on eBay this year that went for ~$1400.

Good luck to Galam, I would've risked it too.

Posting it is likely to get you backdoored, i.e. another buyer will offer double or triple what you just paid. I know a certain forum member here is guilty of this. You are better off keeping it under wraps until its in your hands.

I bought a Saturn lot 2 years ago with House of the Dead and Burning Rangers, BIN for $100.

Ends up the system was broken and the 20 games were all CDR.

Seller also had 0 feedback, I posted an eBay complaint and got my money back in like 3 days.

I would say you have zero risk and a ton of reward.  Your two recent scores show obsessive eBay watching can pay off and makes the rest of us jealous lol.  Glad to see someone liked winning these.

I was considering this one from the same seller, but it doesn't look right. Doesn't Beyond Shadowgate come in a double-sized case? And I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be blue...  :-s

Is that too much for Beyond Shadowgate? I'm still settling in to the Turbo scene, so I'm not sure how much is too much... seems like that one is really hard to find, though.

The last several Shadowgates that have surfaced on eBay sold quickly at between $400-500.

The last several Shadowgates that have surfaced on eBay sold quickly at between $400-500.

...and then sat on for a couple months till they flip it on ebay with a 1/3 price hike.  Some dipshit buys it and the cycle repeats.

I wouldn't pay more than $175 for a good condition copy.  That btw is to much to me, but the more fair price these days.  From 2007-now the prices on the later turbo games have gotten rediculous.  It's not rarity, it's flippers/gougers and the uneducated that make this the "current" price.

I sold my Beyond Shadowgate with a fake case to a forum member for $65 plus shipping in 2007.  Average on ebay at the time was about $100 at most.
Title: Re: Just pulled the trigger on this (eBay)
Post by: Lochlan on February 18, 2014, 07:04:10 AM
It is a lack of supply and an increase in demand.  If it was just flippers then they wouldn't be selling so fast or easily.  I don't disagree that $400+ is a very high price, but the market seems to be bearing it.  Whether or not it will last is anybody's guess.

Personally I think it has less to do with "uneducated" buyers and is more so a sign that people are simply willing to pay more.  I think part of this is an increase in buying power as more people in my generation ascend financially.  It certainly is in my case.  I admit that I paid $400 for my copy, and I would do it again. (Allow me to now duck, to avoid flying objects being hurled at me.) I can afford it, so why not? I would have rather paid less, but at some point I just accepted it.  Some of you probably think that is bad for the market, but I just wanted the game.  I would rather have Beyond Shadowgate than $400. /shrug

And Dynastic Hero isn't supposed to have a clear tray.  'Tis just a replacement case..... or Galam's gettin' scammed!

Two scores? What was the other one?

Terraforming for $80 shipped.

@Lochlan:  I don't fault you for paying what you are able for a game you want. Personally, BS is one of my all time favorites, along with CF2 and Prince of Persia because those are the three games I have the best memories of.
Yes, it makes it tough for others when gauging the market, but that's going to happen either way. At least it's in a good home. Most of us have overpaid at least once.

And Dynastic Hero isn't supposed to have a clear tray.  'Tis just a replacement case..... or Galam's gettin' scammed!

Why do you almost sound happy about that?

I did ask him about the insert/artwork since the spine and back are not pictured.  He got right back to me saying it was there and he could upload a pic. I told him not to worry about it.
(I prefer the surprise)

We've seen regular proof that flippers are manipulating the market. We're not joking when we talk about a recently sold game reappearing on eBay for double in a couple weeks. We have watched it happen time and time again, and repeated by the same people again and again. Too often the same seller or proven aliases buy up literally every copy of a game which appears on eBay near or below what they sell it for. Many brag about how tall their stacks of Magical Chase are and after a new ceiling-raising sale (or appearance of), too often several copies of a supposedly rare game suddenly flood the market.

We get too many uneducated buyers flooding this forum alone, asking us what to pay for games they aren't familiar with, let alone the set collectors on various forum openly talking about putting together a quick and easy TG-16 "set". They often cry about how they lost out on their third attempt to pay an outrageous price for a particular game that is always available for a fraction of those prices.

We also get too many people here trying to get a high return on their "investments", who call us a bunch of liars and scammers for pointing out with links all of the recent sales which went for half of what they paid.

That's the worst part of all. So many nu-collectors openly talk about how much they hate the TG-16 and its library and know nothing about the games they will or have already paid anything for. What's left of the natural market on the side for actual Turbo fans is a fraction of what exists.

No one ever suggested that the entire Turbo market is resellers and uneducated buyers. They are just the ones mostly responsible for the two tier market. If it was simply game lovers having so much buying power, then why would any of them ever part with their games if the money isn't a big deal?

well said, i personally remember one guy who was buying up all magical chases when they were $250 etc.. very quickly the price jumped to 800.. im sure they have 5 or more copies of the game in various states.  While i have the odd item to trade thats ive held onto waiting for a good trade, ive not got a horde of super rare expensive games to flick on over and over.

It is a lack of supply and an increase in demand.  If it was just flippers then they wouldn't be selling so fast or easily.  I don't disagree that $400+ is a very high price, but the market seems to be bearing it.  Whether or not it will last is anybody's guess.

* nullity makes his final off-topic contribution to this thread:
I'm... I'm a poser.  I found this .gif in the comments on some random news site, and I stole it.  Shamelessly. I'm hotlinking it to this day.  I had no clue what it was until google and other users told me what the hell it was.  I absolutely love the parody science documentary T&E did... it was the first time I'd watched anything T&E that I liked.  Until I found this avatar, T&E were just the over-the-top weirdos in that one show I never watched but always saw commercials for between ATHF and Squidbillies and Fat Guy Stuck in Internet.

I'm sorry.  I hope you don't feel like I led you on, because that is totally not what I meant to do.  It was nothing T&E did or said.  T&E have many great qualities... I just sometimes think I'm ready for T&E but then quickly realize with great certainty I'm not.

I hope we can still be friends.

Lol... that's actually hilarious

No worries, but feel free to sell me a cheap copy of Dynastic Hero to make up for it!

Glad it worked out!!

I can get you an authentic Dynastic Hero case for only $200, and you will still be under the usual price of the game.

...I kid, I kid.

Very nice, galam!  Very happy for you.  Although, I wish that my copy had been that cheap.
