Atlantic Books' publisher, Toby Mundy has acquired CONSOLE WARS by Blake Harris, a riveting behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry. Atlantic will publish CONSOLE WARS: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation in August 2014.
Blake Harris draws on hundreds of interviews to present the first full account of this titanic corporate battle, which transformed computer games into a global industry that last year recorded sales of $50 billion (surpassing the film and music businesses combined).
Sony Pictures and Scott Rudin (Moneyball, The Social Network) are developing Console Wars as a feature film to be directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Knocked Up, Superbad). Rogen and Goldberg are also writing the screenplay. Harris is serving as Executive Producer, and is also co-directing a documentary on the same subject, with Rudin, Rogen and Goldberg producing as well.

Sony developing Console Wars movie
Sony Pictures and The Social Network producer are developing a documentary and a feature film about Sega vs. Nintendo.
by Emanuel Maiberg on February 23, 2014
Sony Pictures is developing a movie based on Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation.
Described as a “behind-the-scenes business thriller,” the book “chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.”
The news comes via a press release published by Booktrade.info, announcing Atlantic Books acquired the rights from HarperCollins imprint It Books to publish Console Wars in the UK. But it also reveals that Sony Pictures and producer of The Social Network and Moneyball Scott Ruddin are developing it as a feature film. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg (Knocked Up, Superbad), who also wrote the foreword to the book, are set to write the screenplay and direct, with author Blake Harris serving as executive producer.
Harris will also co-direct a documentary on the same subject, which Rudin, Rogan, and Goldberg will produce.

Just watch them not include or even mention NEC and TurboGrafx-16 :(
-
f*ck em, its their loss.
-
^Indeed
-
yeah, because everybody with only a bit of a brain knows, sega does what nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together.. so fick 'em.
-
This is going to be terrible.
-
Yeah it will, but at least it won't be a movie that's basically a very long commercial like The Wizard.
-
This is going to be terrible.
Why? If the guy behind The Social Network and Moneyball is behind it, I'm optimistic.

it is gonna fail because not including NEC into the war

He's only the producer. The writer and director is Seth Rogan.
-
Maybe we should email/message/tweet our asses off to the directors and producers to include some Turbografx stuff. They can't completely ignore NEC. Hell Sega was initially scared shitless that the Turbo would have the same success that the PCE had in the rising sun.
It's always a possibility....
-
But...it's not ABOUT NEC. It's specifically about Sega's attempt to take on Nintendo.

It's not about the totality of the 16-bit console wars. Guys are letting your fanboyism get the best of you.
Still not sure why this "is going to suck". Sure, it could. But damn...cynicism.
-
I mean when I think video games I think Seth Rogan
-
At best NEC will get a throwaway mention...
-
OH NOES! THIS ISN'T ABOUT NEC!

Then it's worthless. Sega and Nintendo didn't compete in a vacuum, so ignoring the PCE opening the door for competition against Nintendo (and probably ignoring Sega's lackluster performance in Japan) means this film will give one sided answers and draw flawed conclusions. It's like making a documentary about WWII and only looking at the US/UK battles against Germany/Japan and leaving out the Russians.
Besides, Rudin stretches the truth for entertainment value. This might end up being good as a story (I think Rogan is pretty funny), but I doubt it'll be useful for anything other than a laugh.

EDIT:
Decided to delete my argument because who cares...
We don't know shit about the movie. Has anyone read the book?
-
It doesn't come out until May 13, so probably not. The synopsis they give of the book is...... interesting:
Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.
In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.
The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.
Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.
So Kalinske and the Genesis slew Nintendo and without them the videogame industry wouldn't exist? Yep, you're right. It's gonna be great and anyone that has doubts is clearly a retarded fanboy.

Nah, man. C'mon, you know that's not what I was saying. It's just that everyone's so quick to shit on something before they know a damn thing about it. Not only that, but because the story focuses on Sega's quest to make a dent in Nintendo's empire rather than giving equal time to NEC it's automatically crap. I'm just not a fan of the pessimism is all.
I mean, I could play the same game, if you want: Yep, you're right. Based on a quick synopsis and a press release announcing barely more than the production team, I can guarantee this is going to suck and anybody that thinks otherwise is a delusional idiot.
I'm just trying to be reasonable. A movie about the story of Sega trying to take on Nintendo back in the 80s could be interesting, if for nothing more than pure entertainment value. And if that's the focus, NEC doesn't have to be a huge part of that; especially in the United States, where Sega kicked some ass, and NEC...well...shit the bed.

We can make educated guesses based on the synopsis and the types of movies made by Rogan and Rudin.

The difference being that nobody else was calling others names.

So you still haven't read the synopsis or do you think the movie won't follow the book's focus that closely? If it follows the book (always assuming the synopsis is correct), it'll be about Genny vs. SNES in the 90s.
Quite frankly, that sounds boring as hell. Who doesn't already know about Sega's marketing tactics of spending big on advertising, going for a more "grown up" persona, embracing 'tude, and what not? Even if that does turn your crank, how can you swallow the double pill that Sega destroyed Nintendo when they at best broke even (lost by a mile if you include handhelds from the same era) and that they created the videogame market.

So I'm watching The Social Network today for the first time (20 min left to go) just to get some kind of idea of how good or bad 'Console Wars' might be, if it's in good hands or not. I really don't know much at all about Facebook or its history so I can't tell how accurate The Social Network really is, but they do reference a lot of things so I assume it's pretty accurate. Seems to be a fairly well made movie, meaning it's not some cheapo documentary or something.
I think it's kinda interesting Sony Pictures is making this movie, Console Wars, just as another part of Sony has had some major success over the last 12 months, announcing PS4, ramping upto launch, the launch itself, sales and, so far, coming out well ahead of the main compeition. Especially with regard to mindshare & goodwill in the beginning of this new console war with Microsoft (and Nintendo). I don't wanna read into things much as far as Sony makng Console Wars at this particular point in time, I'm just sayin' it's actually kinda cool.
That said, we'll see if it's only going to be about Sega/Nintendo.
-
Blah...blah...lots of arguing...blah...blah...
Listen, I couldn't possibly care less if this movie sucks or not. I was just trying to be positive about it. Shoulda known better, I guess.
As an aside, the "fanboy" comment I made was sarcasm. I'm here posting regularly on a TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine forum and have for over a decade. I'm as fanboy as it gets. I guess I just forget how cynical these places can be...
-
So nobody can discuss anything until they've seen the movie? Try bringing something to the table next time.
-
so its about the USoA war only? and they do not include johnny turbob and his feka fights?
-
"This is going to suck" isn't bringing anything to the table. Jesus.
Uncle! You win! I give up...
-
How will they find people to interview?
-
As long as the character played by Jim Carrey snorts lines of coke off a Model 1 Genesis, the movie will be worth it.
