Title: Documentary: The Evolution of Your Gaming Setup (aka Happy Place)
Post by: nullity on March 04, 2014, 05:45:12 AM
I've come to realize that I enjoy setting up and tweaking and upgrading and enhancing and rearranging my gaming area/equipment almost as much as I enjoy gaming!  It is my happy place... where the screaming children are someone else's problem... where cooking/fashion television programming is not allowed... where I can release tremendous amounts of flatus into my beanbag and there's not a goddamned thing anyone can do about it.

I know there are other similar threads, but this one's goal is to chronicle the rise to greatness of your happy place!

If you wish to participate, the guidelines are:
[ul][li]Any evolution of your gaming area should be documented by appending it to your original post in this thread so that the progression can be easily viewed by yourself and others.[/li][li]Please be sure to state the date of each update you append to your original thread.[/li][li]Please limit image width to 600px or so... a little larger is fine, (i use 620px) but the world hates horizontal scrollbars... so just don't do it! If you must post a higher res image, please link to it using a lower resolution thumbnail.[/li][li]You are allowed to bump the thread to let the world know that you've updated your original post. Might even want to link to it so the soon-to-be fans of this thread can easily see the update.[/li][/ul]
Happy Place Directory:
[ul][li]nullity (you are here)[/li][li]Esteban[/li][li]Opethian[/li][li]esadajr[/li][li]Majors[/li][li]xelement5x[/li][li]_joshuaTurbo[/li][li]Ji-L87[/li][li]jeffhlewis[/li][li]The Old Rover[/li][li]PunkicCybork[/li][/ul]

Let the epeen waving begin!!! I'll start...

For this initial post, I've chosen to annotate the details of my current setup within the image.  I'll probably just use good old text to note any changes that are made after this point.

Currently a low-resolution photo with very few details (i'm still organizing and stuff) but thought I'd do a preliminary update because I'm impatient and can't stand waiting until i have time to properly label a higher resolution panorma.

I have no evolution.

No game room.

I keep an old SONY CRT in a closet on an old blanket and SLIDE IT OUT when I play the video games. The blanket is powder blue (my favorite color).

Robin's Egg Blue?

Occasionally, I like to compare the CRT versus Modern HDTV (mounted on wall, it can pull out and swivel).

I think there's another thread somewhere in the abyss where people post their setups, but your approach is worth creating a new thread for. Both of my play areas are in a sad state of disarray currently, but when I get around to cleaning them up and organizing them better (and taking a photo of my rats nest of wires for that other thread), I'll post here.

One suggestion I would make is if at all possible make your 600-620px wide image link to a larger image hosted elsewhere, expecially if there's text all over the place. :P  My poor eyes can't read that stuff.

Aside: I have a BIC F-12 in my living room and it's capable of rattling the pictures on the walls (until I put it on an acoustic isolation riser (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002D0B4U)).  Having 2 of those bad boys must be brain-meltingly awesome!

I'm counting down the days until I move out of this sardine can apartment downtown and into a proper 3-bedroom, one room of which will be said "happy place." Until then it's just my PVM with nothing plugged into it and 8 steralite containers all worth more than my car.

I'm currently re-working the setup for a new screen I have. I'll have updated shot in the next month(waiting on new cables).

March 2014 HT update, in beta form:
-got a new screen so I had to move the PJ closer. Still need to get a HDMI cable so I can move the PC to the new shelf on the wall with the amps. Added some HTIB speaker for the rears and center along with a new projector(Epson 905HD). It's coming along well and the screen DOES make a difference.

Console April update, some small moving around:
With the two new turbobs, I had to move stuff around...no one puts obey in the corner. More wire management going on since I had to remove a PS2 and hook the LD player through the receiver since I ran out of room on the switch box array. I'll have to play with it for a spell to make sure it suits my needs...the HD TV is mainly for OTA, so only the DTV and 360 are hooked up, but I left a PS component cord connected and easy access if the occasion arises.

Not that I need 4 PCE's all hooked up and ready, but...well, yes I DO! The Shuttle needed a riser since the damn A/V out on the Duo (and IFU) stick out, but I feel it makes it looks like it's taking off or flying. I may get creative and fabricate some sort of hidden podium/mount so it truly looks like it's floating.

it isn't clear about the Bose bass unit... did it fall out of the trash in the pic or was it just the angle? Either way, better make sure it stays in there where it belongs! ( ;

No fears, it was given to me and was only used as a center(not bass) for a few months. It has since been replaced. I do still have it...waiting for the ebay to gouge the going price so I can make bank on some bose-fanboys.

OG post updated too :)

Here's my setup in my gaming "office"

(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2617/12971162773_4ffca9147e_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93679370@N00/12971162773/)

Most stuff is pretty self explanatory from the labels.  The footstool the cat is sleeping on is one of those you can put stuff in, so it's got all my extra controllers.  The beater NES is one I found for about $5 that had been painted black; it looks like shit but I did all my mods on it and it works like a champ.

My office is pretty messy, hence why you see stuff all over the place too.

Oddly, I don't have any actual pics (Will have to remedy that), but I do have some videos.  :)

Here's when we first moved into our house, and was starting to get the game stuff into the game den:
Actual presentation starts at 1:22.  Sorry, I ramble.....

Here's a few months later (Rambling warnings!)

i should get some pics together of how things look now.  It's coming along nicely.

Actually had to dig on my old photobucket for pictures  :P
My game corner have seen quite an evolution. At least I'd like to think that.

First, it was like this. A simple TV bench on wheels with a hand-me-down PAL CRT TV, a Dreamcast, a used PS2, my cousins old PS1 and my Mega Drive in storage. Oh, and my at the time newly bought Xbox 360. Quite spartan, really. My LCD-sporting Xbox friends weren't overly impressed.

(http://i.imgur.com/npCbUAis.jpg) (http://imgur.com/npCbUAi)

Then I got myself a Saturn and I got a more Xbox-friendly TV from a friend (that also accepted NTSC signals). I tore down the old bookshelf I used before and turned it into a makeshift multimedia bench. Lots of hours was spent here playing Tokimeki Memorial for the Saturn.
(http://i.imgur.com/Fouzjdts.jpg) (http://imgur.com/Fouzjdt)

Now we're talking! Just got bought someone's unneeded pretty much new HD TV, my Duo-R and my LaserDisc player. Let's all cringe together at this setup  Oh, also got a PS3.
This is pretty much how things were looking when I joined here.
(http://i.imgur.com/XMdjy2As.jpg) (http://imgur.com/XMdjy2A)

Just did the first big re-work of the room layout. Tried dividing the gaming into 2 separate setups. A modern one, and an oldschool one. I liked this idea, sadly had to scrap that because it wasn't really space effective. Or pretty. I beat Ridge Racer for the first time in this setup, felt awesome. Can't do it now on my LCD. 8-[
(http://i.imgur.com/nnaiBPVs.jpg) (http://imgur.com/nnaiBPV)

Now we're really getting somewhere - New shelving! Speakers! Scalers! ...well, one. Things looked a bit empty though. I got rid of my CRT now that I had a video processor. LaserDisc collection growing nicely on the shelf.
(http://i.imgur.com/pJFw75vs.jpg) (http://imgur.com/pJFw75v)

And here's how it is today, pretty much. In all it's messy glory. Went from the bigger Technics speakers to bookshelfs because they're just so much more practical. Added a cheapo sub to compensate. I've got a two-step scaling setup consisting of an Vigatec Dune-F and a DVDO VP30. Usually, for NTSC systems, I just use the Vigatec since it's connected to the TV's VGA input to decrease lag. If I want to make use of both monitors (or add a capture device) the Vp30 scales to 1080p and into an HDMI splitter. This solution can still be improved upon

Audio is provided by two cheap Gale monitor speakers, a small sub from König and a Denon AVR-1601 amp/reciever - a very budget friendly audio setup.
(http://i.imgur.com/KPqjTmys.jpg) (http://imgur.com/KPqjTmy) (http://i.imgur.com/ztrpN7fs.jpg) (http://imgur.com/ztrpN7f)

Though I didn't show it before, PC corner also got a make-over. But it's much better organized than the console corner. 360 & PS3 lives here. Both consoles and the PC are using optical for audio and the video is fed to a switch, then a splitter so I can game on whichever screen I like.
Mordaunt Short MS 3.10 speakers from eBay + another cheap König sub connected to a chinese SMSL DAC & an Audioengine desktop amp provides the sound. A somewhat budget-friendly solution

P.S. What is behind the hidden door on the wall?  Is that where you hide the bodies?

It's my inter-dimensional gateway
...is what I want to say. Just a small storage room/wardrobe filled with tat. There's another one on the opposite side of the room - also filled with family tat, cables and random game accessories.

[5/18/2014]

Not much to look at yet, but I finally, FINALLY have a dedicated room for my gaming shiz. No more steralite containers in storage! I've seriously been waiting like a decade to have a place with enough spare rooms to house a dedicated room.

Me and the lady are moving from our respective city apartments to a bigger and more comfortable pad out in the 'burbs. The house has 4 bedrooms, 3 of which we don't need. So boom - instant dedicated game room.

It's literally just a few boxes at the moment (we've only had the keys for 2 days and haven't moved much), but I was able to assemble my tester Ikea bookcase to figure out how many bookshelves I can fit into the space without crowding it. Probably will need at least 2 more, if not 3 more.

Once the room is complete, it will house:
1.) 32" LCD (PS2 and later)
2.) 29" Sony PVM-2950Q w/ RGB hookups (Dreamcast and prior)
3.) The whole damn game collection on bookshelves
4.) Fully restored Outrun deluxe cab
5.) My Neo Geo miniature MVS MAME cabinet
6.) Stacking file cabinet for cables, controllers, cords, etc.
7.) Tats's "HET" nobey image, fully framed as a poster (along with some other art)
8.) Badass comfy leather chair
9.) Small computer desk for my Sharp X68000 and Sega Teradrive

I'll post updated pics as it comes along...

[6/10/2014]

Everything's in the new place and we're about done unpacking. Gameroom started out as a clusterf*ck and still largely is:

Shortly after move-in I picked up the rest of my Ikea shelving (with a corner unit) and got that in position - had to shim the bottom of these things since the floor in this room is warped. I'll be fine if I never have to built this shit flat-pack furniture again:

Panning to the left a bit is the entertainment center which currently holds my Sony PVM-2950Q and a VGA CRT for the Sharp x68k. The LCD will probably hang on the wall overtop of these two.

Still a ton of work to do, and it's looking like 4 shelves won't be enough to hold the entire collection, which is what I feared, haha.

I can say that my current one is.......well...........loosed up...sigh...... :-({|=

Sure I have a little still put together but it pains me to think the majority is in storage...I seriously hope it doesn't take me ten years until the wide and I get our first house.......

Game room before friends came over the other night

2 candy cabs! My jealousy is overflowing. Great game room!

What PCB's ya got in them?
I have about 15 PCBs right now. The one that's vert is currently set up with rotary sticks and heavy barrel and the hori I usually play my shooters. Think I have Xexex in there right now

Wow I didn't realize Ikea make corner shelfs..makes them look much more professonal in the space instead of having gaps and mesh mash of shelfs cramed in.  Now I feel doing Ikea (when I get my first house/man cave) will be the way to go so I can maximiz my shelfing and access/display of stuff.

I always preffer a clean organized game room versus having stacks and stacks of games hidden behind games ontop of systems.....mainly becuase it looks messy but equally because you end up ignoring games and systems because they are not viewable/accessable/ready to go.

it's the classic "Billy" bookshelf system from IKEA - the corner unit really is just a half sized shelf along with a special bracket that makes them all fit together snug. You bolt the tops together and use the bracket on the floor to line them up at angles. Pretty ingenious actually and very easy to install.

Three shelves, the corner unit and the bracket was about $350 I think after taxes.

I think I can avoid having to buy a fourth full sized shelf if I can just pick up extra shelves - each bookcase had about three feet of free space at the bottoms.

that is the thing I always find odd with Ikea shelfs.....the finding just the shelfs for extra use in already owned book shelfs is always a PAIN ....BUT I am going to book mark this for future refferance and that price is pretty good!....is the material quality? NO but if you are living in a house instead of apartment hoping like I have in the past and only really need to install and leave in place instead of move the darn thing around and get the partical baords and cardboard all messed up it will be fine.

Eh...it's typical IKEA shit - one step away from being cardboard. The finish is pretty nice and they're pretty sturdy all things considered. I wouldn't put it in a damp area like a basement unless you had a dehumidifier down there. They're light enough that one person can carry them in and out of rooms. Gets the job done for what I need it for. Buying quality real-wood bookshelves would have set me back two times as much easily.

The funny thing is I have a friend who is a carprinter who minus beer and materials would do a similar set up as your for free, but he doesn't live where I am at and asking the guy to travel 4 plus hours to spend a wekeend to build me a play den is asking to much......maybe.....I don't know ......lol.......I am sure he'd do it, but I first need to buy a hosue so this is all just wishfull thinking and dreaming.....

I use the Billy bookcases as well in my office and I think they're pretty solid for what you're paying.  I couldn't build anything of similar quality for that price or less once I factored in my time, so that's what I used. Another thing I really like about them is the cutout on the back so that they can fit over your trim and right against the wall!

What I did after setting them up though, is stack a majority of my console boxes on top of them to kind of have a display area and maximize the vertical space all the way up to the ceiling.

Yeah - those cutouts at the bottom are a smart addition; they go right overtop of the moulding on my baseboards and flush with the wall. The Billys also come with a wall-mount bracket to keep the thing from toppling over.

Totally could have built my own shelves, but I definitely don't have the patience and free time to do it these days.

Is anyone else thinking what he needs in that center corner shelf unit is a Vetrex?  Looks like a perfect fit and if positioned in the center would make for a great play area for it as well...

Better be bubble wrapped and sandwiched between cardboard to prevent damage.

Extra cardboard?  You mean a bulk order of sound dampeners lol

But seriously nice pmv laser active set up..

I have a storage room that I just throw stuff in, which has all of my duplicate systems and other random junk.  It is so messed up, that cannot be documented on here, as I fear I may be featured on a future episode of Hoarders.

Clash, all you have to do is get all those damn wires, power cords and controllers under control.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Recycling old photos. Don't get upset, I use the Sony CRT for all my old consoles (I literally slide it out of the closet). I was curious about how my old consoles looked on the LCD when I snapped that photo (to test the alleged "game mode" in the settings). Not pictured is the subwoofer + speakers I use when I can blast music (otherwise, I use headphones). I rotate hardware and consoles every month or three...

Esteban - I may have the wires of 15 systems and 30 controllers on my floor, but at least I don't have a cord covering my TV screen!

Toymachine - If you look closely next to the TG16 games at the stack of crap covered by the garbage bag (to avoid sun fading) with a few firecrackers on top (for the sake tempting the Gods), that is a stack of about 20 AES games.  Note, the AES is not actually on the floor, as I am using a Nuon as a shelf.  ...the Nuon and N64 do get floor treatment, for obvious reasons.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UEZKIK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

All of my LA games are hidden in this case, which is under a stack of other boxes because the thing is heavy duty and it can handle it.  No joke, I can't lift the case due to the weight of the case + it being completely fully with LA games.

Another game room Easter Egg, the boxes above the LA game case contain my two Vectrex 3D Imagers.

Finally, the shelf of Sega Saturn items is just a handful of the games.  130ish of my games are held in a CD binder, with the cases in the previously mentioned storage room.  I just don't have the space to display all of those mammoth boxed Saturn games.

P.S. - I need to sell a Vectrex 3D Imager.

Didn't you have a shitflood in your basement a while back?  I seem to remember you having water issues around the same time my basement filled with sewage.  I'd be terrified of keeping my precious obey in the basement after that ordeal.

Haha. We did have a minor issue, but it was nowhere near my gaming area. It was on other side of the house and stayed very contained.  It frightens me what you remember.

Nice! That's about the size of the room I my basement that I wanted to turn into a game room, but you have way more gaming stuff to fill it with than I do.  Good idea keeping the controllers in ziploc bags.

what are all the pictures behind the futon?

My guess is comics in frames or more possibly vinyl records?

I am actually standing half way down the room when I took the original pics.  It's 30 feet long and 11 wide.  Exactly half the footprint of my house (width wise).  The frames are records.  I tried to keep a sci-fi theme going, but I'm contstantly swapping them out when I find new ones.
The skateboards are a different story all together.  The black one actually has a very faint face on it, but it's hard to see in pics.

What's the framed deck? One of yours or signed pro deck possibly?

Very nice looking room!

I need to grow my room to that dimension to make my stuff actually fit!

Wait...the pc engine cd add on works on a us TG-16?  Or was it modded to work on it?

I'd like to know maybe I can get a working pc cd add on and sell off my non working us cd add on (but keep the cd base) to make up part of the difference

Good god man! I'd forgotten that you were the one with the franken-nesicom. Impressive collection, and you've made Darwin proud with your documentation of its evolution.

question:
when are you going to get around to putting neon underlights and a big wing on that TGCD setup, and why hasn't it been painted or (better yet) chromed? And you've STILL not embedded a turbo tap into the chassis...

Make it happen!

It's funny you mention this.  I already have parts for a planned project and the last piece I need is a tap I'm just holding out for a cheap one.

No mods are required.  As far as I know all standard stand alone PCE drives work with the U.S. dock.

P.S. I love broken stuff send me a PM if you ever want to get rid of that busted drive.

You could also get a working PCE one and just swap the insides so your US one is "working" again.

Moved stuff around, had to get that PVM on display.

I can wanted to get the games more exposure, since I rarely listen to my CD's, I swapped them. This also makes it easier to grab a game and play since there is no panel in front.

That's looking pretty swanky, man!  Quite the collection ya got there, too. :3

I was in a similar predicament.  I had a separate room for my games & what-have-you, but the lady didn't have a space to do arts & crafts and such.  After an evening of heated discussion eventually culminating into a panic attack, I calmly pitched the idea of giving up my room to her & moving my things to the living room (a more logical place for the TV, anyway).  This ended up working out in my favor.  For my birthday, she helped her stepfather make some wall-mounting shelves, so I could get rid of many of the behemoths crowding the space.  The rest of the room's a mess, but here's what I've done with the shelves:

(The empty space on the middle shelf is for my Dreamcast, which I'm currently playing)

This is a WIP, and I've got more shelves coming with which to put up the rest of my games, and some more toys, so there'll be more pictures soon.  Yes, it may be odd to have all this set up in the living room...but we fly our freak flags high.  :P

Bumping this old thread because I just rearranged my dorm and am pretty happy with it for a few reasons. 1) Because the setup is great for me and everything is neat and tidy. 2) Because I've got all the gaming machines I've been wanting/could ever want and have them all in perfect/playable positions. I have no idea how I got good grades last year, but this should be no different. I like to think of this as the "stress-reliever" section :)

Obviously this isn't everything, but right now my dorm gaming station is looking much better than anything I had back home. Not all the games are here, but there are certainly enough.

This is a cool thread, and while I'm a bit late to the party, I came prepared.  Well actually I came some sticky white stuff, but we don't need to talk about that

So here's the setup before I owned the house:
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2013-10-18_zpsguml63g3.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2013-10-18_zpsguml63g3.jpg.html)

The person before me was a record collector, the whole down stairs area was wall to wall records.  This picture was October 18th, 2013, so this is right before we moved in.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-01-03 23.29.36 Custom_zpssv3qxrap.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-01-03 23.29.36 Custom_zpssv3qxrap.jpg.html)

Here it is on the 3rd, 2014.  Yes, it's one hell of a mess.  For those who don't know me, I got my Duo with my own money from working as a kid, and I've been "collecting" since 14ish.  Or just buying a shit ton of old games, depending on what you call it; I was too messy to be considered a collector for a long time.  Anyways, shit happened, and my games were stored in boxes at my parents house.  At some point, someone moved said collection into the barn, and they didn't even use the same boxes.  They just dumped them into larger boxes, and put in the barn where bats could poop on it, and rats could eat them.  And the cords, I think they used them as jump ropes to tangle them all up.  Took me FOREVER to untangle.

In this picture I'm messing around some with system placement ideas a shelf area in the center of the room where he used to keep his records.  That's a crap-tastic 33" CRT with way too much over scan.

Note the perforated peg board in the middle.  It didn't last too long.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-03 20.56.15 Custom_zpsvcesehky.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-03 20.56.15 Custom_zpsvcesehky.jpg.html)

Here it is in June, 2014 with a new coat of primer, the center part ripped out, and my $5 goodwill speakers (Still using them). You can see my kick ass Extron video switch in the center, I'll show pics of what it can do later

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-15 17.46.25 Custom_zpsvply9vw8.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-15 17.46.25 Custom_zpsvply9vw8.jpg.html)
And a bit later on in the month, I started painting it.  While it looks like I didn't finish, I painted all I needed too; I was going to make a "face" for in front of the shelves, and paint it black.  Then put hooks in it to hold the controllers for each system.  Ran into a shit ton of design issues though, think I got them all figured out now though.  Note the baby CRT, think it's a 19", it's now off to the left somewhere.  I keep it around, due in part cause of the power of my Extron switch.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-28 21.29.31 Custom_zpsw5v5sjjl.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-28 21.29.31 Custom_zpsw5v5sjjl.jpg.html)

Lookie what I got for $60 at goodwill.  It's a LCD projection TV, so has most of the benefits of CRT and LCD combined (But requires bulbs every so often; I get them for $20 each)

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-29 16.49.36 Custom_zps2krhc7cv.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-29 16.49.36 Custom_zps2krhc7cv.jpg.html)

And here's me trying it out some.  This isn't actually a console, that's an emulator running in that pic. I dislike modding hardware, this way I can keep it all stock, and still get many of the picture benefits + play games I don't own.  A best of both worlds setup.

And how here it is today (Nov. 17th, 2015)
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1283 Custom_zps8n7zbs5e.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1283 Custom_zps8n7zbs5e.jpg.html)

Almost nothing's hooked up, I still need a lot of wires to show up; the Extron uses BNC and I just now got the adapters, but I'm still waiting on some spools of instrument cable and RCA ends to start making all my interconnects.  And power, that won't be for ages; I'm getting my first switched power block tomorrow to test out.

Anyways, first thing's first, there's no place to sit yet.  One reason it goes slow down there. And yes, that is a C64 on the coffee table.  The Denon receiver ($8 goodwill again) runs it's speakers into a switcher, so I can run the speakers on the game stand itself, plus enable the surrounds or turn them off if I don't want to bother the wife.

I mentioned the Extron, it's a big boy video switch.  It's a 6U case if you know what that means, and it's a 16 input, 8 output matrix switcher:
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1283 Custom_zps8n7zbs5e.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1283 Custom_zps8n7zbs5e.jpg.html)

If you're going to go big on a setup, you really should look into a matrix switcher.  It let's me take any input, and send it to any output.  I could play nes on the CRT for some duck hunt goodness, then switch it over to the LCD and run snes on the CRT.  Or I could run the Duo on both, just because I feel like it. The coffee table has a LCD on it, one new part I'm waiting on is a composite -> HDMI converter, meaning yes, I have 3 monitors I can run systems too, all right there.  One of the outputs of the switch runs to the Denon, meaning I can have nes on the CRT, using the CRT's speakers, and snes on the LCD, playing through the sound system, only to flip it and have nes on the sound system.  Or, I can play a CD in the DUO, and not even have it on the TV.

If you know me, or if you looked at the f*cking wall of text I just wrote, you know I don't half ass stuff.  When I do something, I f*cking over do it.  4 of the outputs from the switch run into a CCTV processor, for security cameras.  If you don't know about these amazing devices, they're in a sense a picture-in-picture device with all sorts of options.  With a matrix switcher, this gives you amazing abilities,

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1308 Custom_zpshwex1rfg.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1308 Custom_zpshwex1rfg.jpg.html)

For example, I decided to send my xbox to all 4 inputs on the CCTV, then sent the CCTV back to both TVs.  The result is 8 XBOXs.  And now I decide to send Turrican (TG-16 version of course) to the CRT, and port #1 of the CCTV:
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1309 Custom_zps8ecrql1n.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1309 Custom_zps8ecrql1n.jpg.html)

But I changed my mind, and now want him on the LCD, I just send the CCTV to the CRT, and the Duo to the LCD (And it's still also going to the CCTV):
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1311 Custom_zpsrbi5yswe.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/IMAG1311 Custom_zpsrbi5yswe.jpg.html)

I'm sure a bunch of you think this is dumb as f*cking hell.  Well besides the ability to have more systems going, it's great for a few other tricks.  Playstation had some games that used the link cable, now I can use those on the two TVs, or send them both to the LCD.  I'm planning on getting 3 more gamecubes, and the GBA players.  4 of the gamecubes will be setup will pretend to be GBA's, but rather than play say, 4 swords on tiny GBA screens, I can now route the 4 sub-cubes to the LCD, and the main gamecube runs on the CRT for some kick-ass 5 player action.

Ozzy, I am mad jelly of all that shelf space.  The first empty pic you posted alone shows what a cool space it is, with lots of great spots to store and display games in.

Nice room Ozzy!  Some of those shelves on the back wall in the first picture look really wide for records - they weigh a ton! Are there brackets on there I can't see?

Half of one, it's a single player bartop.  I planned on making a second one, but no PC inside, just a monitor, controls, power, and USB, then link the two cabs using a VGA screen mirror.  So each person sees the same screen, but it's a head to head, no elbow poking setup.  Never did get around to it.

But in this setup I'm one of the few people who's arcade machine can keep their drinks cold:

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.53.49_zps0qxsbiw9.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.53.49_zps0qxsbiw9.jpg.html)
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.54.13_zpsxtqfof5a.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.54.13_zpsxtqfof5a.jpg.html)

And since I'm here, show the rest off for good measure:
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.53.42_zpskdkmai0u.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.53.42_zpskdkmai0u.jpg.html)

I work from home, and it's nothing for me to have 6-8 PuTTY windows open, so I need 3 monitors.  I used 3 at my old job too, thought it was a bit much, I took this new gig, and when I went to meet my coworkers, most of them had 4-6 monitors on their desks, just not all the same thing.

If you're wondering, yes, that's three monitors on one laptop.  They're connected to USB video cards, and those plus the usb sound card runs into a heavy duty USB hub (I've burned up many cheap ones), and that runs into a mechanical USB switcher.  I have my laptop's docking station plugged into port 1, so when I dock the laptop, it reads the speakers and monitors.  If I want to use my personal laptop on here, I just plug it into the usb and press button 2, and boom.

(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.54.44_zpsghfsahvv.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-04-06 17.54.44_zpsghfsahvv.jpg.html)

This isn't even close to my home lab, before we moved the front of the rack was filled, I was working on the back. Now I only work directly with Fortigate firewalls, no Cisco gear, so I've not bothered mounting the rest, or wiring it up.

Yea when people think of weight on shelves, they always think stuff like the big, thick hardcover books are bad.  But for me, I collect D&D manuals, these thin hard cover books are the worse cause so many pack in, same with records.  One record weighs nothing, but you fit SOOO many in them.

He has supports for the long runs with boards placed randomly, and not all of them are the same size:
(http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u486/ozzy19961/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-22 17.33.58_zpskusfjazt.jpg) (http://s1070.photobucket.com/user/ozzy19961/media/Gameroom/Small Gameroom/2014-06-22 17.33.58_zpskusfjazt.jpg.html)

Most of them are the 2x12s he used for the shelves, but some are 2x8s, and 2 to 4 of them are OSD it looks like.

And the top of the TV stand is a closet door.  We were living at the house almost 6 months before I noticed that.

Quite the game room, ozzy.  I enjoyed seeing it go from a blank slate, to a big ol' mess as you first moved in, to the nicely organized current state.

But there's too much nobey.  :P

So the Queen of the kingdom I live in ordered me to a different claim.  The good news is I now have free reign.  Hopefully, continuing evolution will allow me to create a full on "man cave"

The following is the new setup as of 9/15/15

The other taller ones too

My setup is in a constant state of "evolution".

The thing is the lack of space in displaying everything properly.
If I'm at a stage where I can't find the space, then I'm kinda into "project mode" thinking of maybe a room extension or addition.

This is a part of my Ninty collection where I've yet to decide where it will go. So currently it just sits all kind of disorganized.

Another "temporary" setup where I still need to organize everything.

And here are my main gaming room setups:

(excuse the mess on the couch)

That game room started life like this:

This is adjacent to the above room,

This is a small setup where it's more convenient for the kids to mess around,

I like how these shelving units really utilize that corner and have a closed off are at the bottom for bulked items. Where did you get these at?  Also how the shelf part is adjustable and can easily acomodate Oder retro and cd case sized items.

Got them locally. Johannesburg.

You're welcome. Guessing from where you're at, it's a lengthy flight time to reach me, though.
No guarantee the on-flight entertainment will be very good to pass the time. :P

These are all cheap shelves from Walmart.  The taller skinny shelves I think they call a media shelf and are like $30.  The short one with the Sega stuff is just a bookshelf from the same company and is also sold at Walmart.

...time to revive this old thread.

My happy gaming place as it looks at this very moment.

(https://abload.de/img/sam5135qajgv.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=sam5135qajgv.jpg)

Please... don't mind the alcohol. We were in the middle of a Devil's Crush session, six people trying to beat the highscore.

The HiFi/AV shelf on the right was constructed and built by myself, just so you know. The rest is Ikea stuff.

EDIT: So funny, I just noticed the infrared glow of the Wii sensor bar being visible on the photo.

THE START:

I don't quite have everything in yet, And I got to find a way to mount the PVM, but I at least have the start of stuff moved in.  Still, 4 more consoles and a ton of random games and accessories to move in.
