Title: Neo Geo Fighters Topic
Post by: lukester on March 22, 2014, 02:18:17 PM
I've been inspired to make this since another thread.

"Hey! C'mon! C'mon!" Let's talk about Neo Geo fighting games! You can say anything from best to worst, to win quotes, nostalgic stories, and tiers or your mains.

I have a few (mainly Neo Geo CD)

Fatal Fury Special (used to like it, now seems kinda stiff, cheesy and cheap)
Samsho II and III (both incredible)
KOF 96 (great, Chizuru sucks though)
Last Blade 2 (have not gotten into this one much, seemed too complex?)
Garou MOTW (Xbox 360 port)
Real Bout Fatal Fury (coming in mail)

My favorite series is probably Samurai Shodown so far. I would like to get them all at some point.

Garou Mow and Last Blade II are great games, I've spent many hours playing those with friends.

Should check out Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, that's where it's at.

Also. Pick up the Fatal Fury collections for PS2. The best.

Shhh, I still gotta get real bout 1!

I want to get the samsho anthology, for V and tenka.

I feel ashamed that I only have one kof game, though. Good thing they are cheap on cd.

I love playing Samurai Shodown II at this arcade near my house. I'm not the best at fighters but I can have fun with that one.

idk if most people prefer joysticks, but I prefer the clicky thumbstick on the Neo Geo CD controller. It's a life saver.

NGCD stick>>D-pad>>>>>>>arcade stick

Just my opinion though.

I've always been curious how those are. Is the Neo Geo CD one similar to the Neo Geo Pocket Color one?

Yep, just larger and a little less loose. The cd controllers work with an aes, too.

Not a fan of the CD Pads due to the button layout.  Neo games are meant for 4 buttons in line that can all be pushed at the same time with different fingers, which you really can't do on the Pad layout.  Even just playing Metal Slug on those pads seems unplayable to me due to the button layout.  If you've only used the pads, you might fair better though, I'm too old to change. :P

The only controller suited for fighters is a pair of modded sega saturn controllers.

I'm not a fan of the NGCD pads either. If I have to use a joypad for fighting games it has to be a Saturn pad. Best pad for fighting games, hands down.

For Neo-Geo fighters, I really like Real Bout Special, in my opinion the best of the Fatal Fury series.

any KOF that's not 94 or 2001
Samurai Spirits II and III
Garou MOTW

Matrimelee just for the music

Rage of the Dragons and Matrimelee are pretty fun!

I'll always be a KOF '95 guy, just haven't seen a Fighter come close since that one.  (KOF 98 or Dreammatch '99 on DC come close!)

lots of great fighters to talk about though.  When I was younger I absolutely LOVED World Heroes.  Now that I've gone back to play them I'm finding it's still enjoyable, but not quite as polished as the Fatal Fury series.

Anyone got any Art of Fighting 3 love?  I really enjoyed it after hearing others say it was the black sheep of the series.  The sprite animation is the best on the Neo (aside from Mark of the Wolves).  The general feeling I have with the game is that it's like a 3D fighter in 2D.  Feels like each character is made to grapple/throw all the while having some decent projectiles. It actually has a lot in common with Virtua Fighter.  :)

Either this or Samurai Shodown IV will be my next Neo Geo CD fighter. :)

I've always wanted to play an AoF game, but I've heard this is the only legitimately good one. And it's the cheapest, too!

I loved the first one, really never gave the second one a decent shake as it just kicked my ass far too often (1 player mode against very cheap feeling opponents).  I played the first on NEO, SNES and Turbo.  It's a great game with awesome cut scenes.  Will always enjoy the soundtrack.  :)

But yeah, AOF3 is really great!

Just got Real Bout Fatal Fury today! Awesome game! I love the boundary system, and the line system isn't too annoying. And the load times are pretty good. For some reason, Level 3 is the normal difficulty. :)

Only real problems, are that Franco Bash is a giant Haggar rip-off, and every 3 characters share a stage.

EDIT: Just bought Art of Fighting 3.

AoF3 is a crappy playing game, but the graphics make it worth it.  Quite a bit of fun.

However avoid the CD version like the plague.  It's terrible.  Pretty much everything that makes the cart versions great was removed, and the game still has the worst load times of any CD.

Ah, oh well. Arranged soundtrack is a plus, right? I understand characters are smaller.

I do have a CDZ, so load times aren't quite as long.

Without demo cut, how long would it be? Curious.

Post by: SuperDeadite on March 24, 2014, 09:26:39 PM
No experience on a CDZ, but on a Top Loader with all options on, it's something like 7 mins to actually get in a match.

In the end the thing AoF3 has going for it are the graphics, and the CD version pretty much ruins it.  The screen zooming was completely removed.

Some of my favorites:

The Real Bout trilogy
Samurai Shodown II, III, & IV
KOF '97 (I even prefer it over '98)

Just wondering, how good are the newer (2000-onwards) Neo Geo KOF games?

It isn't crappy at all.  It is a different style and has a rhythm to it.  Some of the moves are a bit delayed the entire AOF series is like that.  That said some moves require more time to pull off, it's more realistic that way.  Most fighters have an instant hit when the button is pushed, but if you see a real fight you know bigger moves require a load up or a proper stance.  That said AOF3 is an INCREDIBLY deep fighter and the grafx are incredible especially when considering it's MEG count.

Samurai Shodown 2 for all intents and purposes is a perfect game.  When you factor in it's cost, either AES or MVS, it's the best game on the system and my favorite as well.

This really sums it up. SamSho2 is to SNK what Street Fighter 2 is to Capcom. Fatal Fury was always looked at as a clone of SF (it's much more if you put in enough time) and SamSho2 was what set SNK apart from Capcom during the early days.

Although nostalgia will always say Real Bout Special is SNKs best :D

I Really REALLY like MOTW's but being released late in the life and being so expensive I have to hand it to SS2 which was SO much SO early.  The Capcom Team that made SF2 defected to SNK and made Fatal Fury so yeah there is that.  SF2 is great, but I also enjoy the FF series, mostly because of Terry Bogard and Mai's bounciny boobalinas!!!!

You mean Street Fighter 1 (Fighting Street)?

Also, I've never liked Mai as a character. Saying "Me bouncy!" doesn't make you interesting.

Then again, maybe she is a fun to play as, I have no idea.

She is great to fight as, very fast and packs a punch, certainly a speedy character and you have to remember that back in 1992 most of us didn't have he internet so this was basically porn for us.  Bouncy bouncy!!

Mai was (and still is) one of the more compelling reasons to put Fatal Fury/KOF into the Neo Geo. :D SNK artists really perfected the bounce animation. There's something exaggerated about it that sums up every male fantasy...

Seriously animated a breast realistically 22 years ago is quite impressive, in fact it may have been the most accurate portrayal of bouncing boobies at the time.

I beat Real Bout Fatal Fury today! Terry finally got his revenge... Game now seems easier with Jin Chonsei?

Amakusa is still my main in SS III. I've heard he is low tier, but he has a lot of cool things that make him a solid character for me, personally.

Art of Fighting 3 still coming in the mail.

I love fighting games.  My favorite Neo fighters are Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, and Breaker's Revenge.  My old roommate and I used to determine chores by who would win sets in either Mark of the Wolves or Super Street Fighter 4 (not exactly a neo game, but whatever).

Breaker's never gets any love despite being one of the best fighting games around.  It's fast paced, easy to get into, and gets more and more interesting the better you get at it.

Out of curiosity I just price checked on ebay, I had no idea Breakers Revenge went for so much.  Ugh.  I've wanted a Neo-Geo ever since I was a kid but it's just too expensive.  I don't want to spend more than,  say, $100-$150 on one.  If I ever had the opportunity at that price I'd probably snap one up, but the games STILL cost a fortune on top of that.  Blug.

For the life of me I never quite saw what everyone liked about Samurai Shodown 2 so much.  I enjoy  how it played.  Perhaps if I hadn't been so enamored with SSF2 at the time I wouldn't have thought that way.  I liked Samsho 4 a lot when it came out; I still enjoy it the most after SS Tenka.  For years though I'd see people rave about 2 as if it was this flawless fighting game that still held up today and I just never quite understood why.

To each his own, i suppose...

Lukester is correct here. Capcom employees behind Street Fighter 1 were headhunted by SNK and made Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting and possibly others. Here is a nice history vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-jAs4_p-mI

(note, some street fighter 1 footage with supers and air blocking is from a mugen Street Fighter One remake)

I have some fond memories of the Neo Geo Fighters, but must say that I stopped playing them after about 94/95 or so. I played world heroes 1-2, fatal fury 1-special, samurai shodown 1-3, and art of fighting 1-2.

Back in those days, one of my friends used to go visit his older brothers for a big video gaming fest, and they had all the latest and greatest back then. My first visit, we played fatal fury 2 and art of fighting 1 and 2. I totally dominated everybody in Fatal Fury 2 with Kim Kapwhan, so they switched over to art of fighting. I wasn't really any good at that game so I don't think I won a single game.

After the visit my friend was able to borrow his brother's Neo Geo AES, and we put in some practice on Art of Fighting 2. I got good with Takuma, so the next couple times I went with my friend to the game fest I dominated every fighting game. Funny thing is the fighting game I played by far the most was Street Fighter II, but we never played that at those game fests. Guess it was already old news by then. Or maybe it was because we never played the 16-bitters, and Street Fighter II didn't get a high end port until the playstation came out. They did have Super Turbo for 3D0 but I don't think my friend's bro had the correct controller to make it playable.

Not to burst your memories Tr0n, but Kim Kaphwan is utterly the best character in Fatal Fury 2/Special, just because of his dive.

Last time i was playing fatal fury special i was using kim kaphawn.Timing for his dive kick is tricky but not to hard to pull off at least, man he has one of the best desperate moves in the game.

Real Bout Special is my personal favorite Fatal Fury for fighting engine, characters, special moves, background graphics, music and stages. Real Bout 2 comes very close but some of the subtle changes to characters moves and slightly lesser liked backgrounds graphics keep it from beating RBS. I kind of like the line sway system in RB2 better just for not having the going back and forth all the time.

Last Blade 1 and 2 are mandatory must owns, but man do they suffer greatly on the NGCD compared to the cart versions. Still, very playable if using a CDZ console.

No experience on a CDZ, but on a Top Loader with all options on, it's something like 7 mins to actually get in a match.

In the end the thing AoF3 has going for it are the graphics, and the CD version pretty much ruins it.  The screen zooming was completely removed.

7 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration for the toploader running AOF 3, but it does take a while (40 seconds for the first match and a bunch of 12-15 second loads for the cutscenes/intro/win screens). The screen zooming is there in the NGCD, just confirmed it on my CDZ. They just made the characters 20% smaller and took out a few frames of animation. Other than that, AOF 3 on NGCD is still great, especially with the AST and playing it on a CDZ.
