Hi Guys, I would like to get a hold of one of these stock gears for my TG-CD drive as I want to keep mine as close to OEM as possible.
For one (1), I end up paying $32.25 each if I go with this option:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151088559340?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
However, If I can get 5 people who are interested in a stock gear, we could do a group buy and pay ~$23.54 each via the link below. (I will ship to you for free if in CONUS).
Who is with me?
1. Me
2. tggodfrey x2
3. JKM
4. ElSeven

Add me on there Gunner.
-
Is this a better solution than the gears that have been used thus far?
-
looks to be a 1:1 drop in replacement... hmmmmm
-
The only real downside to the alternatives we have used i that they tend to make more noise.
-
Yep, 1:1 drop in replacement (with reduced noise). Added you, Terry. =]
-
It is an exact replacement so if you really want your drive running the way it was designed instead of modding it to use a different type of gear then this would be the way to go. However, it costs a good deal more than the gears that myself and or Chop get so it depends if that matters to you or not.

I kinda like that zip noise they create. :)
-
A little pricey. We need to found out his source.

Agreed! While we do that though, I still need and want an OEM-style gear so if anyone is interested, please let me know. =]

I know Bernie. It makes the CD drives sound like a Dreamcast system :P
I've actually gotten used to it myself and I find myself wondering if a CD drive is working when it's using the older style gear.

KCs gear has been humming along strong for me! :-)
-
+1 for Keith's gears. I had a drive with one in it and it worked fabulously!
But I decided to try to go for one of these as I know for sure the broken middle gear is the only issue. I want to be able to just plug and play as opposed to sending the drive away, getting it modded, waiting, and raising my costs in the interim.

Yep. This is true. However, the gear is still going strong and I've had zero problems.
-
So not much interest from I can see. I will let this run another week then get with Terry and decide what we want to do (perhaps just split shipping).
Thanks!
-
I don't really need one, but for the price I'd try it in one of my drives to see what stock operation is like, as all the drives I've owned have had chop out Keith's gears in them.
-
Now find a group buy on the laser!
-
Gunner, I am fine with splitting this with you if no one else wants in. I have 2 CD roms so I would like to have 2 anyway.
-
Ive still got some lasers jkm. I bought like 80 of them a while back lol
-
I'd be interested in getting one of these gears, sign me up!

I went ahead and added your name if you are serious. Note: Not sure if the Keith mod is reversible so beware! =)

You are the man! I went ahead and updated the first post. Assuming JKM is in, we just need one more! Come on, someone? =)

Awesome! JKM, please confirm if you were serious so we can do this.
-
I'm in.
Yeah, the gear won't work on the Keith gear since it replaces two, but my Turbob CD has a chop gear in it.
Beemer: you got lasers? I'll send you a pm in a bit, chop has one of my drives, it has a dead laser.
-
Outstanding! PM incoming guys.
-
The gear/mod I supply is reversible. Just have to hang onto the center spindle for the middle gear if ever needed again.
-
Count me in! 8)
-
Add me as well. FL, USA location. Not sure if too late.
Thanks.

Sorry guys, those who did the group buy, many thanks. You all should get yours tomorrow or Friday at the latest. Not doing another group buy as it was an initial hassle. The gear fits perfectly in my CD-Rom2 but it doesn't work/spin. FML.

So the gear was a bust? or is it something else?

The gears are fine. I thought I had purchased a working CD-rom2 that only needed a new middle gear but the disc would not even spin. Something else is up and I'm too broke to send it out atm. Just dissapointed...

Sounds like a laser issue then...or possible the spindle motor. If the laser doesn´t see the disc, then it doesn´t spin up. Check and see if laser light is bright, if its only faint or hardly any visible, then the laser might be dead.

??? laser don't see the disk??? how would it see it if its not spinning. Unless it's just looking for a reflective surface at first. It's always been my understanding that once the laser breaks the midpoint switch it will spin the disk to start to read it. I may be wrong???
-
Upon power up the laser seeks to the middle until it trips the limit switch.. at which point it powers on and looks to see if a disc is present, if it sees one it spins it up and then tries to read the TOC.

Interesting to know, I would think it wouldn't know a disk is in there till it could read something, and to read we all know it needs to be spinning. Nice bit of in there :-)
